489 rebuild

Is it possible to only adjust the backlash without removing the pinion since
the play there is my problem? A total rebuild seems to difficult to me.

I have successfully adjusted some backlash out by moving the carrier but you have to be aware of bearing preload. Also you should check the pattern after you are done.
