Steering column questions

I thought I would post this as a Q & A here as there were questions about a 1968-69 "no shift column" I have for sale here on the site in parts for sale, and there were questions and comments in responses to the ad.

I posted that "I believe it is from either a 68 or 69. Definately "B" body. I THINK it will work for 66-69. It does not have the steering wheel ignition switch for the 70-up.
I believe it is a power steering column and it measures 40 1/2" from the bottom of the shaft to the top of the cast collar."

The question was asked "I think the only difference in the lenght of the shaft that sticks out at the bottom can you give me the measurement from the bottom to where its welded?"

My reply to the question was " The portion I thought they were referring to appeared to be machined from the same shaft to a smaller diameter and not welded. If that was the area they were referring to then the length of the smaller diameter is 4 1/8". This area has a taper in the transition from lager to smaller and the measurement was taken from the the bottom of the taper."

The response to this was "Its for an auto then"

I guess I am confused as I thought the question was wheather it was for manual or power steering, NOT if it was for auto or manual trans.

It is my understanding that there is no difference between the auto or manual trans (floor shift units) but rather just a difference between manual or power steering.

Would anyone else like to comment on this so the facts are straight?

It is MY steering column I had listed for sale. If you saw my basement you would understand. I have parts that I have had for 40 years. I knew this column was a 68-69 but was not sure if it was PS or manual steering and thought that was the only difference in them (which it is.) That is why I listed both a picture and the length in the ad so that a buyer could determine for themself if it fit their application.

I was just responding to OHDs grumbling about for sale adds and stating what I had put in the ad to describe the part. I guess if he would have READ the ad I would not have felt the need to respond to his comment. Mybe he needs a PLAN.

I got laid off at work yesterday so was just sitting around and decided to tear apart a power steering column. I did this with the shaft pulled fron the column itself. Someone had posted on another forum that the weld could be cut and the shaft pulled out at the very bottom of the column where it hooks to the box.It can't! after cutting the weld it pulled out 1 1/2" and fell out.It is also splined. the upper piece has a pin to hold it in position and I drilled it out thinking I could lenghten it there.Can't! the factory has beveled the bottom of that piece to keep it from coming out. Hopes this makes sense to everyone.So I think a guy could shorten a manual shaft to work with a power steering but not viceversa. Actually if a guy wanted to cut the shaft and reweld it with a added section it will work but really don't want the steering falling apart at hiway speeds. I 'll get the right one for manual

Ok How can someone tell me where the difference is? Is the the shaft that sticks out of the column longer on manual? Thats my guess can someone measure theirs and give me the measurement fron the weld to the end of the shaft? Thought I was so smart but now....

Yes, the shaft is longer for a manual steering car than for power because of the difference in the size of the boxes.

I don't have the measurement but I think there is another solution. I believe there is an adaptor for this purpose. I would check with someone like firm feel.
