Anybody doing any upgrades to their Race Cars over the winter? [Archive]

My engine has been freshened and still in plastic wrap from currant engine builder ARC.After & if I survive the holidays the parts to freshen up the BDS 1071 roots need to be ordered along with a dominator top plate,crank hub and timing ring and installed.Then I can set the blower on the intake to install the new SV1 carbs and carb linkage then fab up some fuel lines.Once that's all done it's off to the engine dyno where I hope ARC will shine like the sun.I am looking for 2 boost levels,7/8 lbs on pump gas and 13/15 lbs on 116.My hemi is now about 545 inches and I hope it stays there for 4 or 5 years:eusa_boohoo:

Sounds like the circuit is growing....It looks like you are now averaging 25 cars!! That's great!!! Maybe you'll will come over as a group to the Monster Mopar.. Remember all makes are welcome between 60'-68'... Hemi's, Wedges, Cammers, side-oilers, nail heads....NO small blocks. NO Tranny brakes, Max tire width 10.5w.

I want to rewire mine. And try to figure out why it runs doggy, except when it's wide open. The 383 in the picture is going in my 64 sport fury. I may even race it once. Gotta see what it's got, you know.

That car is off the hook and now I hear it's even better with a 7.50 cert.
and a new removeable frontend.
Just wish he'd listen to me and get a set of Jesel offset lifters.

I would like to build a 400/512ci or 440, but not sure if thats going to happen. Because now that i have money saved up again i've been seeing some nice cars for sale :) for example a 72' pro street lemans in primer with a built 455/4speed for 4k obo :o

will be putting together the hemi for the coronet this winter still gathering parts for the build picked up a nice used crossram setup for it back in sept complete intake carbs linkage and fuel lines etc not really at the point of needing it at this point but to good of a deal to turn down, next i will be purchasing crank rods and pistons so it will be off to the machine shop sometime in jan( i hope)so i can have a short block done then i will have to save for some stage 5 heads it sure is a slow process what do you guys think about going with a 4.50 stroke hemi? i think thats the route im going to go.

Were talking from experience, it doesn't cost much more to go 577 than it does 426.
Check with your machinist and see how much machining it would take to put that 4.500 stroke crank in, I think if you haven’t' already bought the pistons and rods, you'll be ok. If I'm not mistaking that is where your clearance issues would be.

we are going for a new set of headers from holt, new radiator, fix the rear end, new tires all the way around (going to try pheonix out on the rear this year, have heard nothing but good things), and also are going to redo the fuel system.

No big changes for us really.

We went to Pheonix this past year, 29.5-10.5's and love them. We're runing 14.5-15lbs of air in them and they hook great. The only down side to them is since we elected not to run tubes they do leak some. You'll have to air them up in the morning because they'll probably be a pound or two down from where you set them the night before. I wasn't surprised since Mike Cruchfield from Pheonix told me they would do that with out the tubes.
Pheonix is a good choice!

thanks guys mine will not be a full on race car but will see some strip duty here and there will be mostly a weekend street cruiser i have been talking to john arruzza and he recomended going 4.50 stroke 7.1 rod and bore .60 over im thinking .30 over would be fine and he sells a piston he designed for that combo and matches the stage v head combustion chamber and ross makes the pistons for him that he sells does that sound like a good combo for my application?as far as a machine shop a friend uses riekers out of owosso michigan but the gentleman i purchased the crossram setup from out of detroit recommended best machine i believe there located in farmington hills anyone have someone they would recommend here in michigan for doing machine work on a hemi thanks.

The Dodge motor is in the shop just waiting for spring. Just found some more horsepower it will be enough to get some 8.90's! We just need to find the fastest track in the midwest!

yea after talking to habrura (sp) about them, we are sold. never realized how many of the fast guys actually ran them.

Did ya all find out what was going on with your dads motor? I know he was having some issues in Clay City.

I'm glad to see your going the Pheonix, they're a good outfit. You can call them and get strait answers.

As for Dad's car,

Motors pulled and at the engine builder. I know we were having water issues both at Quaker (the Buckeye Race) and Clay City. I think that it was when he re filled the radiator in the spring he didn't put stop leak in it. All of a sudden we noticed at Norwalk (I think) we were going through darn near a quart of water a round. Oil looked fine, so we knew it wasn't going to the pan.
We were also on pins and needles because we had a couple of bent push rods in the car. Our engine builder had 3/8 push rods in there with 849 @1.250 springs. (the guy is really good but a little old school.) I noticed them last year they were all polished where they went through the head, I knew they were flexing but other than that it wasn't hurting anything, I made mention of it to our engine builder and he didn't seem to worried about it. I talked to Manton, Smith Brothers (push rods) along with both Squeak and Danny and they all said we needed at least 7/16 push rods. So this is being corrected this winter.
I guess we'll find out more when he gets it apart which should be in a two or three weeks.

I'll give you the same advise I gave my father. When he built his 65 Coronet I told him to do it right, make it light - make it easy to work on - and build it to go fast the first time. I told him that I made a lot of money for Jeg Coughlin because of people like him. (I use to work there). He would tell me...."ahh Kev, I don't care how fast I go, if it runs 12.00s then that's what it runs, I'm just bracket racing."
AS YOU CAN SEE AT THAT TIME WE DID NOT WORK WELL TOGETHER. LOL.
Well he started out running 12's then he was getting close to 11's so he had to get there. Then when he got into the low 11's, thats when he got hooked up with the Chrysler Classic Events "Hemi Super Stock" Class, well at the time they had a 10.50 index to run with them, but since they were short on cars they let dad run. Well guess what the new number was 10.50s. When he finally got there they bumped the index to 10.40's so he took the motor back to Bartons and had a roller put into it and some other things. Ok, so now he's running 10.20's. Then CC Events went back to the 10.50 index. So never the less, he was focused on going 9.99, then when he hit that, then it was 9.80's then 70's 60's now it's 50's.
You see the moral of the story. He built that motor 10 times to do what he could have done in the first place. Hey, I don't faut him he was in his 50's and finally had enough money and parts to live his dream. But it sure would have saved him a tone of money.

As for the combo. Here is what I'm planning for my 65 Belvedere 1.
I would like to build a 557 or 572, with crossram. Stage V heads probably just his basic head.... if I found a good deal I would go with the big valve. But stay away from the raised port head because of header issues, and I don't see it working on the street with low compression very well.
Buy the best crank you can along with the best rods you can buy... (less worries), long rods are easier on the cylinders (less side load)
Put a semi mild cam shaft with 10.5-1 comp. you'll be set. You don't have to buzz the motor very hard no matter what which is easy on parts. And if you ever do decide you want to just race it all you have to do is have some port work done and change cam shaft. Heck Chris is running 9.70's with 10.5 - 1 compression on pump gas.
That's the way to go in my eyes.

I know its way down south but I think Bella Rose (spelling) down in cajun country is one of the fastest track in the country? That is one of the places that all the Super AH guys go to set records.

You couldnt have said it any better. I have made that mistake twice on my hemi.
Should have done it right the 1st time.
Well now I'm on my 3rd rebuild going to change things once again.

i am about 3 hours north from detroit was planning on using eagle crank and rods will those work good, compression will be 10.5.1 i want the car to be capable of running around 11:80 to 11:60 do not want to cage the car so would like to stay above the 11:50 cut off and i want decent street manners will be driving on street a majority of the time to cruise ins and shows and taking the family out for ice cream so im looking at like a 511 or 525 ci only want to build it once like you said but i think this combo should fit the bill for what i want the car to do all around and be reliable and it will leave some meat on the cylinders if a rebuild is ever needed in the future what bore is that to achieve 557 or 572 ci and is that with a 4.50 stroke crank and 7.1 rod thanks for all the help this is my first hemi build.

Got the car home, cage looks great nose easy on and off now new four link bars and new radiator Thanks C+F still no bill told me to have fun at PRI. Now the engine next hope that goes as well. Boy what a hobby does it ever end LOL.

Now you get to wonder the whole weekend, how much is that bill. how much is that bill?

Just bought a new World Block, lifter bores bushed and line honed. Building a new 572 with Indy heads and original crossram with 14.5 compression. Its going in this car.

Putting in new coan convertor,wilwood disc on all 4 corners,having the carbs.tweaked by Damon.Installed new fawn colored interior from Gary Ball.Painting the nose to match the body! The list keeps growing.

I'll be putting the dual AFB's and STR back on to start the season.
New Mark Williams center section, axles and spool.
New Wilwood front brakes to go with my new front tires- Moroso Drag Specials.
Just today put the new Harlan Sharp rockers and shafts on.
Before season starts hope to get new lighter aluminum radiator.
Need to get a new seatbelt and shoulder harness to replace the outdated one in there now.
That'll do it.

Actionage, I have workrd alot over the years on the STR intakes I have some mods that are usally worth .10-.15 over stock even more with carb changes. I you want to send me a pic of your intake open and I can pass along the changes if you want.

We are taking our car to Holt's shop this Thursday for new custom headers and some front suspension work. Other than that we just adding new rubber and we will be ready for Florida in March. poppaj

I just redid my B1 Headers to fit the TS heads, new flanges and new rerouting.
My 588 should be ready this week.Got to go to michigan to pick it up.
Hope no more accidents going thru ohio on route 80.
Alot of good its gonna do me now.
Got so much snow here I cant get the car out to put in the motor.

Just got the B1 flanges from Koffels, port size is correct, I had to grind out the Hookers that are on it now. We are just going with steel step header with merge collecters and coat them. Good luck throuh Ohio although I think Michigan is worse...I think turn signals are a option on cars there. Tell Chuck I said Hi.

Those solid core plug wires are 25 years old. lol I guess its time for a change to some Fire Core wires with the MSD. So they say anyway's.

I went with te Taylor 409's for my hemi.
We dynoed back to back with firecores.and msd's. No difference at all.Taylor 409 we got 3hp gain.

Thanks, good to know. I know when I contacted Fire Core, there was an issue with their boot's using cast iron K heads.

I would think that enough is enough. I don't care what you all are running or where. If we come to Beaver Springs it will be to see our Penn. friends and some of the 422 bunch that we have not seen in a few years. We concentrate on running "TRUE" NSS index formats wherever they take us. If I were going to run dial in/anything legal stuff I would still be campaning our

AS it stands now we are planning on Beaver Springs as it looks like a open weekend for us. Sure we can race, would make a cool picture, but you better start in low gear. Our car runs better than you think. Last time out we went 1.281 - 60' and a 6.0 in the 1/8 mile. Just don't want it to turn into a big internet bash till then. poppaj

Slim, I swapped out driveshafts from my other car and got the blue dodge ready. weather was very humid and I was all loaded up and was heading down when I got a call from my wife that my daughter got into a severe car accident.
I had to turn around, it was 7:15 in the AM and I was already an hour into my drive. Here are some of her injuries we took to prove it.
Unlike you never producing any timeslips of that 1100 HP car of yours.
I don't need to prove anything to you but just to show you I'll race you anywhere, anytime, any place.:stfu::knob:

It's twice trhe price of Metro Parts ones but they have been out of stock now for over a year and good used ones are impossible to find nowadays.
The billet aluminum ones imo are definitely worth the price for a race car since its over twice the thickness. I just put one on the black 65 Dodge.

JEALOUS HATER. Yes I lost twice. not 3x's and atleast I got picked. I made a nice bunch of cash and got alot of airtime.It's a once in a lifetime experience which you'll never get.

I don't want to get involved in this shooting match with whompin or ssr, but lets leave NENDRA out of it!! we have a good membership of dragracers who like racing, and having a good time, and for being recognized as NSS the spectators that come to watch us race, love what they see... we don't need to be sanctioned by any organization.the membership is growing. Wow! Have you ever been to a NENDRA event? Just because you particularly don't race in their events and have a problem with Chris doesn't mean you have to dog NENDRA. Very low class, IMHO. I don't race in NENDRA, and probably never will as my car is a 10.5 car, but that doesn't mean I'm going to dog someone else's program. If you want people to take what you say seriously, try showing some class. If you want to flame Chris, so be it. There's obviously friction there. Just don't act like a childish douche and dog an entire program that has several very talented racers and very stout cars. Like was said, bring your car to one of their events and see how you shake out. As usual you want to turn this into a grudge race or a he said, she said. I don't care if we ever race. You talk a big game but if you were serious about running this class (NSS) you would come to some of the races. We traveled thousands of miles to attend the finest true NSS races in the country. There is a decent NSS circuit (Not a true index race) but none the less a good race series on the East Coast, that is the 422 Motorsports circuit. Why aren't you running that?
You can come up with all the stories you want about us, but the fact is we race.
No disrespect to the Nendra racers, it is nice you'll got it going. A better description of your circuit might be a a Gasser or Hot Rod circuit. Does not fit the NSS format ( National rules) generally formed over the Country. Once again, no disrespect we wish you all the best.
We wish everyone a safe and successful racing season. Hope to see some of the very nice people I have met on this forum at the track'

Just for the record NENDRA is defined as the North East Nostalgia Drag Racing Association. The paragraph below is taken directly from the website:

This organization is designed to allow numerous types of cars to participate. It is based on the premise that we race to have fun but allows us to have a competitive spirit for all involved. Any American made vehicle from 1961 to 1974. This will allow all cars from the “muscle car” era to participate. New for the 2011 season, all cars in competition must run between 13.99 and 8.50. This will be a bracket style dial your own type racing with a breakout rule in effect. A Pro .500 tree will be utilized to limit foul starts and allow for more even racing. No red lights mean the racer has a chance to “race” the finish line, and the spectators get to see a better show. The object here is to create a safe, competitive venue for showcasing vehicles from the “Golden Age of Drag Racing.”

No where do I see anything about Nostalgia Super Stock in the name or description. It was devised to allow more variety of cars and not have the hard fast NSS rules. The guys that race NSS on the East Coast- CT, NY, MA and NH have to drive long distance at great expense and for long periods of time (mostly from NY metro traffic) to go to NJ and PA. That being said NENDRA gives them a place to race, have some fun as a group and live within a reasonable racing budget by driving less distance without tolls or traffic.

I will be treating myself to another visit to Beaver Springs this July. That in my estimation is the "mother of all" NSS races. If you've never experienced it you don't know what you are missing.

65' Dodge, This has been going on for a couple of years. We go to the race at Pittsburgh Raceway Park(Curt George Memorial) every year (Have been there the last two years) out of respect for great friend Mr. George. We will more than likely be at Beaver Springs this year as that weekend is free right now if none of the series NSS races get moved to that date. I have no problem jumping in my coronet myself and airing it out against this guy. It takes more than a home made video at a sea level track to impress me. That said I am done discussing it. poppaj

A few years back I posted who has the fastest NSS Car in the country and SLIM started bashing me stating that I said I had the fastest NSS car.
It turned into a pissing match and I asked him to produce a time slip or a video of his fastest time and ET.
He kept saying he went faster than me but no proof ever.
So i put up a few videos of my 9.22 passes back to back.
So SLIM put up in his avatar faster than the fish peddler(that's me) without any proof just fiction. Heres another video of another 9.22 pass on a 9.22 dial.

thanks planning on going but probably as a spectator though, the old dodge is kinda slow with the current engine in it maybe when i get the hemi done in the next year or so, maybe we will bring my buddys 65 plymouth altered wheelbase if its done by then that would be cool all fab work is done,now its at the body work stage then drive train and interior and so on and so on maybe we all should have a fbbo meet and greet there with a cook out or something?

my old coronet is so slow i would be embarresed to say just how slow it is my 60 ft times are whats killing it, it just won't come out of the hole and come to life i've only ran it at the track once and made 4 runs i think the carbs crap have to double step the carb taking off so that and maybe the converter are killing it going to play with it again when the weather breaks from winter to see if can pick up maybe at least a second or a few tenths anyways cant wait to have the beer summit though see ya there.

heres my engine. It's a 440 bores .30 over with the Eddy RPM upper half, comp cam, Moroso pan, TTI headers and a few other goodies. I'm carbing up this spring, as well as an oil accumulator and a few more little things then it's off to the races..

Chris... Nice combo. The accumulator is money well spent. Make sure to get one that you can pre lube the motor before start up. It's a real good feeling knowing you have oil pressure before you hit the starter.

Keep us posted on your progress!

pretty much bone stock i believe 70 383 hp engine, aluminum dualplane intake manufacture of it unknown 750 edebrock manual choke carb i believe stock chrysler electronic dist, now has pertronix coil and mopar chrome ecu 727tf shift kit stock converter 8 3/4 355 sure grip 275 60 15 biasply tires on rear heres what my best run was of the day 1/4 mile 60 ft 2.457 and 15.97 at 87.21 mph like i said really sad but my first run i've ever made with the car since putting it together the engine internally i have not touched just bought it and put in car basically i would at least like to get it down to say what a stock 383 roadrunner would run or close im thinking carbs a little to big may put a 650 holley on it and see with more tuning where it goes as the 60 ft time shows having the trouble down low once she starts going she goes good any tips? thanks.

thanks i've tuned the carb changed the metering rods and springs it helped the cruise mode but killed the performance its a edebrock remanufactored carb ive kinda had problems with it since day one i will play with it some more when winters over.

YES, The Edelbrock or Carter Carbs are very easy to tune.
I like them the best of all carbs out there.

Finally got the engine in my 64 Dodge Polara. I went with a '69 K-member, which put the engine back against the firewall (where it belongs); modified the trans X-member for set back; added frame rails and boxes from ART; all new front suspension and brakes; put a stout radiator in it (the '69 K-member allows plenty of room for upgrading the cooling system); just worked to make several overdue repairs to prepare for cruising this spring.

I've included a pic, and a link to a short youtube clip of the car. The engine had just been fired up in the video - with tuning still required.

The car does need some help with the rear suspension. I think it's got the stock leaves with the right rear biased by ~1", which annoys the fire out of me. Anybody got recommendations on the best rear set up to run these days?

Wow! Good price! I paid $225 for my 15x3.5 Holeshot fronts. Rears will be quite a bit more with double beadlocks, lol.

The car does need some help with the rear suspension. I think it's got the stock leaves with the right rear biased by ~1", which annoys the fire out of me. Anybody got recommendations on the best rear set up to run these days?

If you don't plan to cut it up and install ladder bars or 4 link Calvert mono leaf springs, Caltrac bars and QA-1 shocks will do the trick. Call Calvert for the parts and excellent customer service.

Thanks Actionage. I've heard a lot about the Cal Trac stuff, but often times I hear the Cal Trac set up puts the rear suspension in a bind. Has that been your experience and if yes, did you try floaters or something else to reduce the effects ? What has been your experience with them ?

Eddy carbs are easy to tune. Remember all the fun Joey and I were having with 2 of them on my car at the Beaver? Best part NO FUEL to drain like a Holley. :glasses6::icon_hang:

I know they work... It's just, I've never had much experience with them.

Although what's not to like having $10.00 a gallon fuel spewing all over the intake and moping it up with rags??? LOL

Now that I think about it the Eddy carbs are kind of like "green carbs" because you don't have to spill fuel to change jets. Maybe the Obama administration will endorse them. You can get Obama Bucks back for every Edelbrock carb you buy. LOL

I haven't had any problems with binding. I've never heard that before regarding Caltracs.
However if you run leaf springs and ladder bars a floater system should be employed to eliminate binding as the spring and ladder bar don't get along good without one. They are operating in different arcs and binding will occur.
