moparman73 01-08-2011, 07:33 AM Why do all the parts vendors seem to want to sell the rosette rivets ( the little flower-shaped rivets that hold the vin tag on) for such ridiculous prices?
Do us car guys have "rip me off" stamped on our foreheads?
First, before someone brings it up, no I don't want vin rivets for illegal purposes. Sometimes they are necessary, like when i had to change the plastic dash pad in my 1994 Ram truck. The vin tag is riveted to the plastic dash and had to be transferred. I ended up finding a way to reuse the original rivets after just about fainting about the prices vendors are offering these rivets for!
And before someone else posts the myth, no they are not a "controlled item" or illegal to possess.
So, I have been racking my brain to figure out why everyone wants $25-$45 a pair for these rivets.
They are not a low production item and thus expensive because of low sales volume--there are about 7 million new cars sold in the US every year and every car has two--thats 14 million rivets, not counting the ones used for restoration and repair!
The only conclusion I can come to is---they just want to rip us off!!
If any one knows of a reasonably priced source, please let me know, I would like to have some on hand for the next time.
Well, I feel slightly better now, even if the rip-offs continue.
1badgtx 01-08-2011, 10:01 AM You have to remember that most people think if you own a MoPar you gota have money...They watch way too much t.v.Auctions like barrett jackson really does not help our cause either...Me i,m just a poor state worker that doesn,t want to drive a chevy or a model A..I wanted a Mopar for 30 years...Finally got it and it,s still a work in progress...

5wndwcpe 01-08-2011, 02:19 PM Supply and demand my friend. The Marcus Hook refinery (Sunoco) is right next to Philadelphia, yet gas in the city costs more than it does 100 miles away. Why ? Because people will pay it, that's why. It's the same with the rivits. If people weren't willing to shell out the $25 to $45 a pair for them, as they do now, the sellers would be forced to lower their prices. Of course, there's nothing stopping you, or me, or anyone else for that matter, from sourcing these things somewhere and selling them for $5.00 a pop. Wonder what the other guys would do. :bootyshake:
Dang, I can get these rivits pretty easily though my work connections, maybe I should start selling them...for $10 each!
Just kidding.
I'll look into it and maybe I can get a big batch for cheap and sell them at a discount for FBBIO/FABO owners.
Stay tuned. No need to PM me.

moparman73 01-08-2011, 08:35 PM RGAZ, if you can buy some reasonably, I'll buy some from you to keep in stock
detmatt1 01-09-2011, 05:15 AM Thanks Randy, I'll be needing a couple of pairs of these soon.

Any success in finding some rivets at a reasonable price yet?
Joe Mopar 02-15-2011, 01:14 PM Well here's a (stupid) question. Since the body shop drilled the rivets on my vin tag to remove it for body work I will be facing this shortly.
What are the ramifications if any to just using alum. pop rivets?

Not a good choice to use any ole rivet , vin tampering can taint and put a stigma on the car that will follow it everywhere it goes . Put it back correctly .

Now, back to the original problem--where can we get these rivets for a reasonable price???????
Any FBBO members work at dealers, body shops, distributors, somewhere these rivets are readily available--those trying to sell them for $45 a pair are not having any trouble getting them!
Lets find the source, maybe do a group buy and end the rip-off once and for all !

Ain't that big of a deal,if someone (as in original poster) "really" needs them, I'll give you a pair!!
moparman73 10-10-2011, 04:30 AM 62 Max,
Thanks for the generous offer. This whole "rant" got started because I was planning ahead, trying to source things I would need later on in the process for my car. I don't desparately need them right now, but I will need some later when the dash come out (right now the engine compartment and front suspension is being done) Just looking to buy them for a reasonable price, and $45 /pair does not seem even close to reasonable to me.
oxytousc 10-17-2011, 03:14 PM I am with Moparman73...I am going to need a set of these in the hopefully not too distant future when I swap in the new dash. $45 a pair is ABSURD.
moparman73 10-17-2011, 08:08 PM Yes, all we have to do is find out where the ripoff artists are getting them from and cut out the middleman. They can't be very hard to get if you know the manufacturer. Anyone have any info??? Brand, Part #, anything???
