rumblefish360 01-11-2011, 09:29 AM Not super familur with the cars stero.
Is it a 2 X 4 square opening?
IF so, then most any aftermarket stero on the shelf will fit in. With that said, I would look into a name brad myself. I like Pioneer. There fine units to use and are inexpensive to purchase even with your requested needs.
Look for one (Most all ready are) powerful with 50 watts of power.
Alot of guys cut the door panels or kick plates for speaker placement. Theres normaly a decent amount of room on the doors lower corner up front. They can handle 5-1/4 easy, check speaker specs for a 6-1/2 round. If you can fit a 6-1/2, go for it!
gregs70 01-11-2011, 08:18 PM My 70 Road Runner has a dual shaft old school Alpine cassette deck in the factory slot using a factory bezel I got at a swap meet that had already been cut. If you put something in the dash, I suggest doing the same - getting a factory radio bezel that has already been cut at a swap meet for cheap and using it. Mounting the head unit in the glove box or under the dash are also options. There are "stealth" units you can mount anwhere, like under a seat, and use a remote. www.custom-autosound.com is one website.
I fit two Infinity 3 1/2" speakers under the grill in the dash. I couldn't find 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speakers thin enough to fit the kick panel on the driver side and not hit the emergency brake pedal. Some guys get small box speakers and mount them under the dash. I've seen people make custom center consoles with room for the head unit and two speakers, one on each side. If you pop off your door panels you can probably find a place to mount speakers if you don't mind cutting up your interior. It all depends if you want to keep your interior looking stock or if you don't mind letting your equipment show. Good luck!
MRHWS 01-12-2011, 08:47 AM I mounted a Dual-50W x 4 In-Dash CD Deck XDM6350 in the glove box, leaving the original radio in the dash for the stock look. I mounted Pyle-Pro PDMR9 - 5'' Dome Type Midrange Speakers in the kick panels(less than 2 inches thick) and clears the E brake pedal and Kenwood KFC-6982IE 6-Inch x 9-Inch 500-Watt Max Power 5-Way Speaker System in the rear deck from the trunk side so the package tray cardboard would lay flat. This also eliminated using the ugly plastic speaker covers that came with it.
THE STIG 01-16-2011, 06:09 PM Im in a similar conundrum with my 70 Charger, if I can't find a bezel that's already been cut what's the best way to cut mine?
THE STIG 01-16-2011, 07:33 PM Year One has an aftermarket bezel with a hole for a CD deck for 68-69 Roadrunner would that not work for a 70 Dodge? I could'nt link the specific part for some reason it's near the bottom of page 1.

I actually used a 3/16 wood panel in my 70 Bee. I fould one that had a very similar grain to the one on the factory dash and was the same color. You hsd to look REALLY close to tell it was different.
gregs70 01-17-2011, 09:21 PM Here is my radio installed, and the reason I can't put speakers in my kick panel. Sorry, wrong pic attached.

THE STIG 01-18-2011, 02:28 AM Hey what are those seats in the wrong picture?
As a bonus, I didn't drill holes to screw the plate on, and my stereo had DIN (I think)connectors, so I effectively created a pull out unit, by simply lifting and pulling forward, then unplugging two connetors and the antenna lead.
I guess I'm assuming the OP has a woodgrain dash...that's probably not a safe assumption.
GTXKen 01-18-2011, 11:56 AM I made speaker grills out of my kick panels and used really shallow speakers

Thanks for finding that i tried cutting one out of thin wood but it looks like crap. I need to get one.

That looks good, what kind of speakers did you get?
gregs70 01-19-2011, 08:28 AM Hey what are those seats in the wrong picture?
That all-vinyl pair is for sale for $150 with tracks plus the ride. The logo looks like 3APC Racing or 3R Racing. Really comfortable and they hold you in on the curves. They don't have a flip forward lever so getting in the back seat means cranking the recline knob. Summit Racing sells similar seats WITH a flip forward lever (which I am putting in the car now) and tracks - SUM-G1159-2. They also have them in beige and grey.
Kick panels look good.
Did you use a template...awfully straight lines of holes.
What holds the speaker in?
GTXKen 01-19-2011, 07:39 PM I forget what speakers I bought, sorry, they were from some big online steareo warehouse.
My template was a drain grate...lol

That's F'n genius, man!!!

GTXKen 01-19-2011, 08:00 PM Thanks, I spent an hour or so walking around menards to come up with that one. Speakers are attached to the car body with metal strapping by the way, nothing fancy

What kind of installation kit is that did you just get a universal?

MRHWS 01-20-2011, 10:19 AM Here is my radio installed, and the reason I can't put speakers in my kick panel. Sorry, wrong pic attached. If you haven't gone a different route, you need to look into the Pyle 5".
http://i1002.photobucket.com/albums/af148/mrhws/1973%20Dodge%20Charger%20SE/frontspeakerdriver.jpg
Pyle's used to be about the best value going as far as quality/price went.
Great freq response, and very efficient for just a bit more than jensen or spark.
My 12" non-sub boxes with realistic 23k "death star" tweeters, on a cheap 75w amp frequently blew away systems costing thousands of dollars on both volume and clarity.
gregs70 01-20-2011, 04:54 PM What kind of installation kit is that did you just get a universal?
I used the kit that came with the radio. I took out the factory AM and bezel, found a butchered-up factory bezel for cheap at a swap meet and used that. No, the original radio is not for sale!
davidl13 01-22-2011, 08:58 AM the problem with kick panel speakers, is that they sound terrible... since the speaker has no room to breath, you end up with no bottom end....i don't mean bump and grind, you just don't hear the drums or bass on classic music... on my 69 barracuda i had my local guy build an under dash console with speakers out on both sides, i believe i used 6" rockford fosgate speakers and it came out great... i just don't want to cut the metal behind the bezel to mount a modern stereo on my 70 superbee ... if anyone knows of a head unit that will do satellite radio.... i listen to sat radio all the time... the grateful dead channel !!!!!!!! and Fox news... I may be the only one! lol!

I scored a set of kick panels already cut for speakers for cheap at a swap meet. I'll take a look at the Pyles. Thanks!

I already have a pair of 3.5 inch Infinity two-ways under the speaker grill in the center of the dash (yeah, I know, I lose some of the L-R stereo imaging) and a set of 6x9s in back. The kick panel speakers would just be used to fill in mid-bass & mids up front. Might work for me.
davidl13 02-10-2011, 11:15 PM although i have not heard it yet, i found what i think will be a good solution... a single stereo (dual driver) speaker to mount in the existing single speaker location on the dash... add (2) 6x9 on the rear tray and i think this will work well... no cutting or drilling of customizing needed...

hunt2elk 02-11-2011, 06:05 AM David,I have a dual cone front speaker I will sell you if you want to try it. I was very dissapointed in the sound quality. Remember that the low end still shares a common part of the speaker. The dual voice coils are very small with low power capabilities. They are for the higher frequencies that our ears don't pick up well to start with. I ended up making a bracket to hold 2 - 4" Kenwoods. This works very well.
davidl13 02-11-2011, 07:17 AM Hunt2elk,
aha!, well thanks to you and our ability to communicate through this forum, i don't feel it necessary to repeat the mistakes i can learn from.... i'll take your advice and get 2- 4" kenwoods..... care to make me a bracket???? :)
thank YOU!
David
davidl13 02-11-2011, 07:43 AM hunt2elk,
are these the speakers you used?
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFC1062/Kenwood-KFC-1062S.html?tp=102&avf=N
also can you fit any bigger ones or is this the max size that will fit?
hunt2elk 02-11-2011, 10:29 AM Those are the speakers I used, but you will have to permently modify your stock bracket or make a new one. I went with the 4" over the 3.5" to get a more powerful speaker and I had a extra bracket laying around. Two 3.5" will fit without as much hassle, and actually ( '74 Sport ) on this forum makes a custom bracket for them. Maybe contact him to get his thoughts.
bill440rt 02-13-2011, 09:33 AM I had a nice custom audio system installed in my '69 Charger. We just upgraded it again this past week.
I had an Alpine head unit temporarily shoved under the seat. We were gonna remote mount the faceplate, until I stumbled upon this from Custom Auto Sound:
http://www.casmfg.com/Secretaudio.htm
The head unit gets hidden under the seat, the faceplate was hidden in the console. It's so slim you could even put it in the sunvisor if you wanted to. It's compatible with both of the Alpine amps I have, CD changer, mp3 or iPod, even Sirius. Sound is incredible.
Here is a link to my thread on DC.com. You might want to go back a few pages to get the whole audio installation. Speakers in the kick panels are very difficult in B-bodies due to the little clearance with the parking brake pedal. so, we put them in the doors with custom speaker grilles.
BTW, Custom Auto Sound also makes a direct-fit replacement dash speaker. It's a dual-voice coil speaker, sounds much better than 2 smaller 3" speakers. I installed that in another car & had the stock AM thumbwheel radio converted with modern internals. There are 6x9's in the package shelf. Sound is very nice.

Hope this helps you.
