Steering Column 69 SatelliteBoz 12-11-2008, 08:59 AM Is there a difference between a P/S Steering Column and Manual Steering Column? I found a Manual box for my satellite and wondered if I have to get a Different Column? Thanks Rick@Laysons 12-11-2008, 11:13 AM The main steering shaft in a power steering column is shorter in length as compared to a manual steering column. This difference is due to the smaller size of the manual steering box. If your car has the power steering column, and you want to install a manual steering box, you'll need to use a power-to-manual steering adaptor to connect the power steering column to the manual steering box. Boz 12-11-2008, 11:17 AM Where can one of them be purchased at? Thanks 696pack 12-11-2008, 11:32 AM Yes, there is. One is shorter than the other. Do you already have PS on your car? If not the steering box is different also. If you need a no shift steering column for PS I have one that the buyer flaked out on and you can see it here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&item=190265101863 The adapter referred to above is $125.00 plus shipping. You can typically find the correct shaft for the same or less. Boz 12-11-2008, 11:54 AM The car I am taking the Box off of is a 67 satellite would the column be the same as a 69? Thanks Rick@Laysons 12-11-2008, 12:08 PM Yes, they should be very similar. Boz 12-11-2008, 12:44 PM Thanks 696pack 12-11-2008, 02:21 PM The car I am taking the Box off of is a 67 satellite would the column be the same as a 69? Thanks The title of the post and your first post was asking about the COLUMN now you are saying box. Both the steering box and the column are different from manual to PS. If you car has the power steering box but you need a PS column then I believe the only difference between the 67 and the 68-69 column is the collapsible chrush sleeve that fits over the steering column. The 68-69 PS column should work in your 67 IF you have a PS gear box. If you are looking for just a standard column shift column they are a dime a dozen and cheap. The manual column is far more uncommon and more expensive ESPECIALLY it it happens to be a no shift varity so if it is available to you for cheap you may want to pick it up anyway. Boz 12-11-2008, 02:33 PM I found a 67 parts car that I'm gonna take the Steering Box off to put on my 69. I was wondering about the column from my 69 working on it. Both cars have Floor shift columns just my 69 has P/S now. I will just pull the column out of the 67 when I get the steering box. Thanks daredevil 12-11-2008, 02:42 PM check out the flaming river piece. a few more bucks but much nicer. 70 bee 12-14-2008, 10:53 AM The Flaming River part is very nice. Mike_Dodge 12-14-2008, 11:48 AM check out the flaming river piece. a few more bucks but much nicer. And much safer.. I saw one of the other adapters at a cruise night that had a nice crack in it. I'd hate to have that thing split when driving.. Boz 12-15-2008, 02:34 PM Well the 67 was gone but found a 71 Dart but my interchange book says that 6cyl and v8 are diff. Anyone know the difference? 69 Runner 12-15-2008, 02:54 PM 6 and 8 cylinder what are different? Boz 12-15-2008, 04:13 PM Sorry Steering box. 69 Runner 12-15-2008, 04:17 PM probably the ratio markmopar 12-17-2008, 12:09 AM 6 and 8 cylinder what are different? In manual boxes, the 6 cylinder ones use bushings inside while the 8 cylinder ones use bearings. 69 Runner 12-17-2008, 08:21 AM never heard that before Rick@Laysons 12-17-2008, 12:16 PM In manual boxes, the 6 cylinder ones use bushings inside while the 8 cylinder ones use bearings. That has been my experience. When I have done conversions to manual steering, I've always looked for a manual box from a V8 car because it does have the bearings which makes it a little easier to turn and park in tight spaces. 69 Runner 12-17-2008, 05:09 PM Back when I owned my T5 car the first time around, the original manual box went bad....thankfully in my driveway. So I went to the local yard and picked up a clean one out of a Dart that was already missing it's motor. That box is still in my car, some 30 year later. Mike_Dodge 12-17-2008, 05:51 PM any way to ID a /6 vs a 8 cyl box while it's in the car? 696pack 12-17-2008, 10:36 PM any way to ID a /6 vs a 8 cyl box while it's in the car? I have my doubts about this but if it is true it should show up in a parts book as a different number, otherwise how could the factory keep track of which to put in the right car? Rick@Laysons 12-18-2008, 01:23 PM The 1969 Chrysler parts book I'm looking at has the 24:1 standard steering gear housing listed as part# 2537 347 for 6 cylinder cars. The 16:1 fast ratio steering gear housing available in the Darts and B-bodies is listed as part# 2537 346. Boz 12-18-2008, 02:30 PM I think I might just put power steering back on it. Is there a Difference between power steering mounts from big to small block? 69 Runner 12-18-2008, 04:17 PM Nope. Same 3 bolt arrangement 696pack 12-18-2008, 04:23 PM The 1969 Chrysler parts book I'm looking at has the 24:1 standard steering gear housing listed as part# 2537 347 for 6 cylinder cars. The 16:1 fast ratio steering gear housing available in the Darts and B-bodies is listed as part# 2537 346. But is there anything listed showing a difference between V-8s and /6s? I have never heard of anydifferences except fot the optional 16:1 fast ratio steering. Boz 12-18-2008, 06:45 PM I just saw in my Hollander that they were different but didn't say what the diff was. Rick@Laysons 12-19-2008, 10:17 AM But is there anything listed showing a difference between V-8s and /6s? I have never heard of anydifferences except fot the optional 16:1 fast ratio steering. There is nothing listed in the parts book describing or showing in diagrams any differences between the two housings. But if I were to speculate on the difference, I would believe that the difference is that the 16:1 housing is made for the bearing and the 24:1 housing is for the bushing. | |||
