toniflexen 01-14-2009, 12:25 PM Hello,
my question is what kind of aircleaner were available in 1965 for a Plymouth Satellite with 383 cui engine and 4 bbl?
I have this one on my carb:

Basoline 01-14-2009, 02:50 PM Hi Flo,
This is correct. 4BBL cars came with a Slant 6 type aircleaner.
Check this page: http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner.htm
Oh, I aksed mr Mosher for advice on this one too, because my 383 still has an ugly Mopar Performance aircleaner....
toniflexen 01-14-2009, 10:58 PM oh thank you!
Nice to know!
383man 01-16-2009, 11:28 PM Yours looks correct to me. Ron
toniflexen 02-08-2009, 11:17 PM How I can identify if the engine is a HP Commando or not?

Histoy 02-09-2009, 10:24 AM I believe that the machined pad would be stamped 383 HP
|GF|.:Kowalski:. 02-09-2009, 11:49 AM i think there was no HP engine available in this periot. so my suggestion is to ask mr.moscher! well, keep me in the loop anyway if i´m wrong!
696pack 02-09-2009, 03:29 PM I happen to own a 1965 Dodge Dealer Data Book.
It shows that the correct air cleaner for a 383-4 and the 426 wedge is an unsilenced unit on both, which would be the SECOND one pictured above.
The odd thing is that it also has a picture of the 383-4 in the engineering section of the book and it shows a DIFFERENT air cleaner in that picture that appears to be a cross between the /6-273 unit and the other unit shown for the 383-4 and 426 Wedge.
Also, it shows only one 383 engine available in the Coronet and it is the HP 330 h.p. 4 barrel engine.

Niels, did you mean Commando vs. Super Commando?

Here are the engines in 1965 that the factory considered High performance for Dodge and are the same for the Plymouth sister cars. It is based on engines requiring premium fuel, and comes from the Deal Data Book.
273-4--235 h.p.Dart only
383-4--315 h.p. std. on Monaco optional on Polara and Custom 880
383-4--330 h.p. optional on Coronet only
413-4--330 h.p. optional on Monaco, Polara and Custom 880
426-4--365 h.p. optional on Coronet, Monaco, Polara and Custom 880
426-Hemi--425 h.p. optional on Coronet only
Histoy 02-10-2009, 03:19 PM I was wrong about the 383 HP being stamped on a 65 block. As it was stated above, blocks in 65 were not stamped that way.
According to my 67 Motors Auto Repair Manual... Plymouth offered 2 of the 383 engines in 1965, a 2 barrel rated at 270 hp and a 4 barrel rated at 330 hp.
toniflexen 02-10-2009, 03:39 PM fine! thank you all!
I have the one with the 4 bbl carb!

They offered 3. See my list above, plus the 2 barrel you mention.
Histoy 02-10-2009, 07:15 PM According to the Motors manual, the 3rd 383 option (lower hp 4 barrel carb) was only offered for Dodge products, not Plymouths.

You may be right about that, I only have a Dodge Data Book and there were a few things that were not available between the two car lines, all though for the most part things were the same from sister car to sister car.
Basoline 02-12-2009, 11:51 AM A while ago I asked Mr. Mosher about the aircleaner. He told me that back in the days, he bought a new Belvedere with a 383 which was fitted with a slant 6 style aircleaner. Guess the truth us somewhere in between...

There is something to be said for that, as Chrysler wouldn't stop the assembly line for an air cleaner. They would have thrown on what ever fit. However, that is not what was SUPPOSED to be on the car according to the Data Book.
This is a much more common type of thing than most of us are aware of, as it didn't just happen with Hipo cars but with 4 door /6s too, but those cars are not being restored and documented.
When it really becomes an issue is when you have a high dollar car that someone is trying to be faithful to an OEM type resto. They buy an unmolested car from say an original owner, and he says "that is what it came from the factory with." Yes, it was probably a factory mistake or "substitution" and in reality is "correct" as a factory "installed" part. However, everyone else is looking at it as a mistake because of what the factory literature shows and how the 'vast majority" of like cars were delivered. That is where the arguing starts. Typically, the "burden of proof" for each individual car is on the guy that wants to go against the norm.
Basoline 02-13-2009, 03:28 PM Well, the small aircleaner isn't that nice as the one with the (untapered) dual snorkels. I found one once on moparts from a Canadian guy. I asked him for shipping costs and that was it....never heared from him again. To bad, I like that type of aircleaner and, as for me, it looks correct.
