So with extremely short notice we decide to paint my car, Our neighbor came over last Wednesday (April 20th) to let me and my dad know he was going out of town for Easter and said we could have his garage after he left that Friday til he came back this past Tuesday.

So we ran to get all the supplies that evening (Wednesday), Then Thursday we went to get all our primer and paint mixed followed by stripping the entire car on Friday we also begain to sand it. Saturday more sanding lol, Sunday we were at our friends most of the day and didn't get much done, Monday we did more sanding and checked over the whole car, Tuesday we prepped it for paint taped all the windows up, As my dad was spraying the primer he ran into a problem with low air pressure (Never happened before) So it took him alot longer to get it done. Our neighbor got home that day and said we could use his garage for a few more days so we were able to sand the primer and make it perfect, My dad kinda got busy with work so we didn't get much done, And then yesterday about a week after we started we got the paint sprayed, Sadly things didn't go quite as planned. Again after we thought we had fixed the pressure problem it still wasn't working right, The gauge would read 30psi at the gun and as soon as he would spray it would drop to like 10psi while the tank was showing 120psi... Still don't get it but he was able to do his best and it came out pretty good.

For some strange reason the whole car is rough but oddly enough i like it, almost like a satin PCP, Not sure if i like it more then a glass like finish but for now i'm happy! Anyways i'm sure some of you are just waiting to see the car so i'll start adding pictures, Enjoy!

Wish i got a picture of the quarter above, We made a sweet fiberglass patch, the bondo you see in the picture was to cover up the rough texture from the fiberglass mat/resin.

did you guys spray a clear coat over it, if not is that a top coat paint the reason i ask is with how flat that looks it almost looks as if it was a base coat paint that hasnt been clear coated. if that is the case just figured id give you a heads up on base coat paints you need clear coat to protect the color from uv fade

Well the cars almost finished. We painted my fiberglass 6bbl hood today and have all but 1 pin in, one broke while trying to get a cross threaded bolt off, So i'll have to run down and get another set. Other then that all that has to go back in the car is the fender turn singnals and the windshield chrome, Which still needs buffed/polished.

Thanks, I was afraid of getting into a project like that but i was lucky enough to buy a driver that i was able to drive while i saved up to get painted, now to start saving for new bumpers and a big block stroker :) I'm not sure how many coats he did, He used about half a gallon of paint on the whole thing, Thats before reducer.

Thanks for your concern. It is single stage, But it looks dull because the paint is rough in most places, almost like sandpaper. So we wet sanded/buffed an area on the hood and it looks 10x better, So we just gotta go around and buff the whole car. Then it should look like a mirror finish.

Be really careful on how much you wet sand/buff into Metallics...The metallics like to settle in low areas and areas of least resistance. Once you start cutting into the high/low, you'll end up with blotchy patch's

Either way, Congrat's on the paint and post up some more pic's of the finished product.

Yeah that's what I heard but I'm hoping if we go light enough and only get what's rough that we won't have that problem, but idk that's what concerns me but if it does look like crap I guess we'll just spray another coat. Anyways thanks I will get more posted. I finished it today so I got to take it to work for all my friends to see.

Update?

Sure.

Well not long afterwards we ended up respraying the driver side and a couple spots on the rest of the car because as you can see in the last pictures the color...darker/lighter spots didn't cut it after spending so much time on it. SO...after we sprayed the plum crazy we sprayed a few layers of clear (so we could wet sand the clear and not the metallic). We aren't experts just a budget job but it works. We slowly got better. It still has some spots mostly from wet sanding that need more attention with the buffer... but other then that it's pretty nice. I'll have to take a some pictures.

I'm not a paint expert by any means, but I didn't notice any ventilation in your 'paint booth'. Did you have some kind of exhaust pulling any overspray out of the garage? If not, I think that may be your 'flat ness' in the paint. If so, most of it should polish out.

Yeah, we didn't really have any ventilation plus a bad/clogged filter on the gun.

the car looks pretty good considering the short notice you got from your neighbor to use his garage and get the car ready for paint.then the problem with the low air pressure from the gun might have been an issue also too not lay the paint on like it was suposed too.like i said before it looks good and doesn't look like a "rush" job.

Pics pics pics. Lets see how your making out now with the clean and blending and buffing. Im interested. Some of the dull paint may be due to the lack of ventilation as well
