Wheels for my 65 Coronet

I'm trying what to do about wheels & tires on my 65 Coronet 500 'vert. http://1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo62008.html

Anyone have any other ideas besides the ones above? There's only a few aftermarket wheels I like and the Torque-Thrust's are one of those few.

I'm probably going to do 205 or 215/70/15's on 15x6's up front and 255/60/15's on 15x7's or 15x8's on the rear.

I rode to high school many days in a friends 1965 Coronet 500 in the same color as your car. It was a 361 4 speed console car. It had Torque Thrust Ds with the charcoal centers and looked REALLY nice. That is what I voted for. There was no real good factory option except for the spinner hub caps which are easily stolen on the street.

Voted for steelies. I think TT-D's are way too sporty for a cruiser-type car like this.

TT-D were the wheels we used when I was in college in the 60's. I think they look awesome on our B body cars.

Too sporty? They were THE look back in the day. Young guys in the hobby have a mis-conception that was born out of others restoring their cars per the broadcast sheet, which often called for the base wheels and "bottle caps." That is what we called the center only hub caps back in the day.

What the young guys fail to realize is that the buyers of these cars new ordered them this way (which was standard and cost nothing extra) because they intended to soon take their new car to the wheel shop and put aftermarket wheels (such as Torque Thrusts) on the car along with headers, intake, carb etc. if it was a performance model. Hub caps and full wheel covers were considered the look of your "dad or mom's car." The ony time you saw a young guy keep a set of wheel covers was in the case of the "simulated mag wheel" that was often seen on 66-67 Chargers.

The young guys in the day couldn't get those steel wheels and bottle caps off of the car quick enough. Us old timers that were around in those days still LAUGH at these cars with the standard equipped wheels. The whole idea was to IMPROVE the look of the car and it's performance.

Here's some pics I've taken with Crager SS's and some steels w/ dog dishes. I'm NOT going to be using Cragers (a friend let me borrow them) but I think it give's a good look @ what the Torque Thrust's MIGHT look like. With the steels, I would use the red-line Dodge caps, and the paint would be an exact body color match (what's shown is the closest thing I could get w/ a spray bomb).

Personally I don't like the steel's as much as I thought I would. The car is a Coronet 500...it's supposed to be the high level, fancy trim package, and while the steel's look good, and look better than the factory spinner hubcaps, they give it more of a taxi-cab look than I thought they would.

I'm going to borrow some Magnum 500's this weekend hopefully and take some pics of them to post.

$ is also playing into this too, and I can get a pretty nice deal on Magnums. The cheapest would be steel's as I already have (2) 15x6's, and would only need to buy (2) 15x8's for the rear, plus caps.

Feel free to comment.

I like the TT-D's but it seems like EVERYONE has them, Cragars are my personal favorite but the cost! I'm still looking for the right wheel for my Magnum, not ricey, nearly period correct but something that will also give it more of the muscle car look. I've found plenty of the Magnum style rims but most are 14s which just won't work on a big car. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....................

At this point the score is 33 to 9 in favor of wheels other than steel wheels and bottle caps. So, I guess it is as it was back in the day with people wanting a wheel upgrade.

However I really think that the only guys that didn't get custom wheels either couldn't afford them or were just all out racers that didn't care about cosmetics and put their money into performance mods.

No one ran hub caps if they had steel wheels it wasn't cool. But 99% of us had after market wheels and for mopars TTD'd and Mickey Thompson sloted mags was the hot ticket.
Around 69 the Craigers and Keystone Classics also became hot for mopars. I can't ever remember seeing a Road Runn, Super Bee, GTX or Charger before 73 sitting on a dealer lot with steel wheels and no hub caps or with the van dog dish hub caps.

Thats right, but you can't convince some of these younger guys in the hobby today of this.

I think it all started several years ago with people doing restorations per the broadcast sheet. When I was selling these cars new the vast majority of ORDERED cars (per customer specifications) were ordered with the cheapest (standard) wheels because the buyer intended to put custom wheels on it shortly after delivery.

The cars that the dealership ordered for showroom stock typically had a factory wheel upgrade so they would "show" better. A few dealers were even dealers for aftermarket wheels and had them on the cars or on display stands in the showroom.

These younger guys have gotten the idea from these B/S restos that it is a cool look, but I can tell you the us old guys reliving our youth with these cars would not be caught dead with bottle caps and steelies on our cars. Even on my 66 Hemi race car has black steelies with chrome lub nuts (no hub caps, even though I have them) on the car that is similar to the factory look that the 69 six pack cars had. The reason for that look from the factory in 69 was two fold. To give the drag strip race look while keeping the package cost down. There was no other wheel option for the six pack cars at all in 1969. The vast majority of the 69 six pack cars ended up with after market wheels shortly after sale as well when new.

Oh I dunno. This Six Pack car originally left the factory with 14" road wheels. I like it better like this. Really funny thing was after I showed up at the race in Norwalk with these wheels, some cars that had styled wheels had changed them by Stanton. These are lighter than Ralleys

Dang;I've liked every combination pictured, including the dog bowls and steels. I'm also diggin' the T-T front/body-color steel rear combo more and more. The Fury in the toniflexen's post about wheels/tires(Racer's Hangout section) really shows that well.

Mine has 14" Magnums on now,and they do look decent on there;great wheel design that looks good on virtually any model.

In 1965, my dad bought a new Plymouth. Whenever I borrowed it, the first thing that I did when I got around the corner was to pop the hubcaps. The next thing was to put the air cleaner in the trunk so it would have that deep carb sound.

But on my '65 Satellite Vert, I put the steel chrome TT-D's all the way around (which by the way look a lot like the cragers, but nicer). And on your vert I would say.... use the TT-D's all the way around, (check the 'steel chrome' TT-D's out, I think you'll like them on your 'vert') ................ BTW....very nice '65 topbanana.

I would like the steelies with caps if they were the correct steelies and caps.

Those in the pix are the smaller 67 up variety - not the correct 65-66 Dodge style big caps. Don't like the small 9 inch caps on early b's. Gotta have the correct big style caps on 15 inch wheels, then you're good to go.

I also like steelies up front with correct caps and 8 x 15 inch steels out back with no caps all painted body color. That's a good look too. But probably not for this vert, too S/S looking.

Cragars do look good, but to me, steelies say Mopar, especially early mopar.

Nice car!

Hope to have my 65 done soon.

The Cragers are lookin good on the cars. My Belvedere was born before me so I didn't witness what period correct was but believe strongly that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that's all that matters. I've got steelies to put on for now but I like to be different if I can. These aluminum slots with Chrysler logo spinners came on the car but I can't place the make on the wheels. Anyone know?

Well, here is the thing with that look. Guys that drove there cars on the street for everyday transportation as well as some drag strip time, kept the original wheels when they bought the aftermarket wheels. In my part of the country (back in the day) one pair of the original wheels got slicks and the other pair got snow tires.

Typically the racers would switch the rears for strip action and would drive to and from the track with the slicks on the back and then switch back to their custom wheels when they came home. Guys that saw the cars at the strip or to and from thought "hey, that is racey looking." this started a new fad of Ron's above look for a while.
