66 and up auto shifter in a 65 console

I have a 65 Belvedere with a big block and want to use a 66 and up 727. Has anybody tried putting a 66 and up shifter and linkage in a 65 B body using the original 65 console? I prefer this over an aftermarket shifter or an adapter cable.

I saw your thread about using the Imperial Services cable. I want to use a shifter and linkage out of a newer B body to avoid problems like you describe.

This type of linkage has a vertical rod passing through the floor, not a cable. Linkage out of another car should work without too much modification. My question is will the shifter itself mount in a stock '65 console without cutting up the console.
