69 RR wheel well paint

I am negotiating with my paint guy. I am trying to restore my RR to factory correct. The exterior will be so, but he really likes to use black POR on the undercarriage which is a rust sealer and protector. Since we will be driving it he feels this is the best application and I know this is not factory correct. Regadless, I have seen some wheel wells that look like they have body color, light overspray, or black. He wants to do them in black. What say you? I really truely appreciate the help as I am a rookie. My son andI have done most of the work on the car thus far, but we are not painters. Thanks again.

I agree black undercoat. Up front it is important so if your tire throws a rock it wont crack the paint on top of the fender. It happens

From the factory the wheelwells would be body color with undercote on top of that.

The bottom of your car got dipped in two feet of primer, then two feet of body color. Thats the reason for all of the body drain holes. Next the wheel wells and transmission hump got undercoated then it got painted and the drain holes plugged. The doors didn't go on before the inside of the car where complete. Anyway the cars had overspray on the undercoating and outside frame rails. The POR15 is a great idea so long as it gets covered in undercoating. In fact you could undercoat the whole thing and be correct because it was a factory option. Of course you could do your wheel wells with 3M undercoating from any parts store. I used 9 cans of it in my transmission hump and wheel wells. As afore mentioned rocks will crack the paint on the fenders plus make small dents. They do the same thing to the rear.

Yep, body color over sprayed in wheel wells then undercoating over that - sort of. The evidence I have seen was quick and dirty and a lot under there was bare metal. I doubt the factory paint guys had more than a few minutes to paint a car, so blow and go to the next one.

I have seen evidence of dipping in dark gray primer up to around the lower door hinge and zinc chromate over the top, but haven't seen the body color dip. My 68 RR still has plenty of body color over spray over the dark gray primer. The body plug holes make sense now!!

The body couldn't have been dipped in color. If it was, then the bottom of the car would be body color, not primer with overspray.
