Have 69 RR w/440 engine, have a Comp cam, fuel pump failure due to the fuel pump rod being damaged.
It appears that the lobe that the rod rides on is bad.
My engine guy says the cams are made of soft metal???
Not a rare case?
Any thoughts on what causes this..

Your engine guy didn't lube up the pump push rod with a good lithium or cam lube when he built your engine, or you didn't when you built it. That rod is the last thing to get oil, if it gets hot and tries to freeze up in the bore it whips out the cam lobe. If the pump couldn't push it back to follow the cam lob its like a valve stuck half open and the cam is ok. Take it apart if it hurt your cam toss it and run an electric pump. If not replace it with a well lubed new rod.
