I have some pretty well etched surface rust on this car that was left in the Texas sun to bake for too many years. My question is how to attack the surface prep for painting. I've seen several products that claim to kill surface rust and blah blah blah. I hate to grind on this body that much. Any suggestions?

One Step was supposed to be good for converting rust to black primer...Don't know if it is still made or not...I have never tried out my can of it

This area is one of my specialties. DO NOT bother trying to convert the surface rust it won't do any good and will come through any paint job in a matter of months. The rust needs to be removed. There are 1 of 2 ways to do this....have the car sandblasted )soda blasting will not work on rust), or take a 6" DA Sander and some 40 grit paper and have at it.
Those rust converters don't work. The rust is still there no matter what you apply over top of it. It has to be eliminated.

I would suggest trying the DA method first. If you get clean metal afterwards, apply a good coat of epoxy primer down to seal the metal, then you can move on to any bodywork that needs to be done. Dont skimp on the epoxy either, the undercoats are what matter most in a good paint job.

ive used naval jelly with great success....takes a while but a lil water, naval jelly, and a slow wire wheel on a drill gets alll the rust out of the pits

im gonna try this stuff soon.....heard great things........ http://safestrustremover.com/

I tried the naval jelly on the roof of the Charger. I got impatient with that after an hour and only a 2" x 2 " patch being done. Then again, my car was on a rotisserie so it was easy to drop off to get media blasted.
