hotrod98 08-17-2008, 09:49 PM I'm getting closer by the day. The heat has finally gone away and I can get back to the painting process. I've been working on this project for a couple of months and it feels like it's taking forever.
I moved the car out into the yard today and washed it inside and out prior to moving it into the booth for taping.
I removed the rims and placed the car up on jack stands. Helps keep the dirt from blowing up on the car. I knew I should have bought a down draft booth. Oh well, too late. As soon as I get some new exhaust filters, I'll start painting. Maybe tomorrow...I hope.
My wife is in one of the pics holding her new puppy. She's anxious for me to complete this daytona clone so I can mover her superbird clone project into the shop.
More pics later.
sublime green 08-18-2008, 06:40 AM Cool, its going to be black right? Cant wait to see some paint.
toniflexen 08-18-2008, 07:03 AM nice!
hotrod98 08-18-2008, 09:14 AM Firtst it was going to be red with white wing and stripe, then black, then red again and now...black. This car is a real triple black R/T SE. My wife and I decided that it needs to stay triple black. Only now, the third part of the triple black is the Daytona stripe.
More pics soon.

damn i was really hoping RED but black will be ok
sublime green 08-18-2008, 12:30 PM Black on black sounds good, cant wait to see it.
hotrod98 08-18-2008, 01:58 PM It was a tough decision, but the majority won.
Hey,
Sublime Green...I sold a 70 Barracuda convertible to a state trooper in Maryland by the name of John Stone. I wonder if he ever got that one finished. Look for him at car shows in that part of the world.

I thought black was a minority
sublime green 08-18-2008, 06:13 PM Really, what part?im in southern md
hotrod98 08-18-2008, 08:40 PM Really, what part?im in southern md
I don't remember. It's been a few years. I contacted him a couple of years ago when I found his number in my desk and he said that he had just brought it up to the house from a barn that he had stored it in and was starting the resto. Sure wish that I had kept that car. I never thought that we would see the repop sheet metal that we're seeing now.
sublime green 08-19-2008, 04:03 AM Doesn't every one wish they kept there old cars, imagine if you were one who had one of them 71 hemi cuda converts and sold it, you'd kick yourself to death, thats not me though, but my dad traded in his 73 340 duster back in 78? that he wishes he had back but now we have got 2 dusters in the garage.
hotrod98 08-19-2008, 05:15 PM Spent part of the day in the booth. The basecoat is applied and I'll be going back in to add the clearcoat shortly. Pro Spray basecoat stays open for several hours when you use the 1:1 method of mixing. By waiting a while before applying clearcoat, the basecoat solvents have time to evaporate properly. Less chance of getting solvent pop or blushing. It's almost too humid to be painting today, but it's supposed to be raining for the next week or so. I was running out of options.
5wndwcpe 08-19-2008, 05:25 PM Just out of curiosity, why did you tape off the drip rails ?
hotrod98 08-19-2008, 06:13 PM To keep the build up of paint to a minimum. Too much paint and the drip rail moldings won't go back on.
69 Runner 08-19-2008, 06:23 PM Well a BFH would "help" them go back on
sublime green 08-19-2008, 06:37 PM Looking good, cant wait to see more, what motors going in it?
moparstuart 08-19-2008, 07:11 PM Well a BFH would "help" them go back on
BFH might work but hurt the moldings :rolling::rolling::rolling::rolling::rolling::tong ueflap::tongueflap::tongueflap::tongueflap::tongue flap:
69 Runner 08-19-2008, 07:13 PM Bfrubberh????:rolling:
moparstuart 08-19-2008, 07:16 PM ok got me there:rolling:
69 Runner 08-19-2008, 07:21 PM well it was just a thought:grin:
hotrod98 08-19-2008, 08:30 PM It has a 440 in it that was built just a few years ago. The car runs and drives. I have disk brakes for the front and a rebuild kit for the front suspension. I just bought all new leather interior for it. I'll start painting the rest of the parts as soon as I've wet sanded and buffed the areas that need it. I did get a little bit of trash in it.
Here's a couple of pics with the clear applied. I just got out of the booth less than an hour ago.
The clear laid down nice. Hope it doesn't dye back.
moparstuart 08-20-2008, 10:12 AM lookin good , times getting short .
hotrod98 08-20-2008, 11:41 AM Good news...I'm definitely driving a Daytona to St. Louis.
Not so good news...It'll probably be my wife's Ram Daytona.
69 Runner 08-20-2008, 12:06 PM Well....you seen one Daytona......
moparstuart 08-20-2008, 01:28 PM I have faith you will be there in a black daytona charger
hotrod98 08-21-2008, 01:45 PM More pics.
The first pic is the charger fresh out of the booth.
The second is of me wet sanding the entire freaking car with 1500 grit on a da sander. I hate this part.
Anyway, the next step will be to go back over it with 3000 grit on a da sander. I hate that part too.
Next step is to buff the entire car with compound and then polish with polishing compound. And, I hate that part.
The only part that I like is when it's finished and I can step back and look at it and say...never again.
But I will do it again, because I don't know any better.
As soon as the car is buffed, I'll start on the rest of the parts.
moparstuart 08-21-2008, 02:04 PM can't you hire some 12 year old asian kids to do that .
hotrod98 08-21-2008, 05:17 PM The asian kids around here are geniuses. They know better than to do the menial labor stuff.
I've only managed to wet sand the roof, the plug and the tops of the panels today. I'll wet sand the sides of the doors and quarters in the morning and buff everything out tomorrow afternoon.
moparstuart 08-21-2008, 08:18 PM awesome keep plugging away
hotrod98 08-21-2008, 08:24 PM This car is too big.
I should have built a Honda with a big wing on the back.
moparstuart 08-22-2008, 01:06 PM somehow larry i dont picture you in the tuner crown
hotrod98 08-22-2008, 03:50 PM Come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing old fat white guys in the ricer crowd.
I guess I fit right in with you wing car cloners.
moparstuart 08-23-2008, 09:21 PM you fit right in and are a welcomed cloner:rolling::rolling:
hotrod98 08-29-2008, 04:28 PM The body of this big 'ol boat is finally buffed and polished. I'm going to move it into storage in the front building for a couple of weeks while I get back on customer work. I'm still waiting on my hollow aluminum wing anyway. No sense painting and buffing the fiberglass wing at this point, just to take it off later.
moparstuart 09-02-2008, 07:38 PM so she's sleeping for a few weeks
hotrod98 09-02-2008, 07:43 PM I really would like spend the time to finish it and take it to St. Louis, but that just wouldn't be fair to do my customers that way.
moparstuart 09-02-2008, 07:47 PM my 16 year old has some picture of his 66 for you to look at . can you do a bid ? from pictures he just wants paint
hotrod98 09-02-2008, 09:45 PM Bring them and we'll take a look. One of my bodymen from the dealership is going to start helping me after the first of the year if not sooner. He's very good. This will help me out a lot. I have two daytonas to build, three if you count mine plus the wife's bird clone thrown in there somewhere. I also have to finish assembling the 67 Hemi GTX this fall.
Revhendo 09-03-2008, 12:57 AM So, after all that wetsanding, polishing and buffing, do you ever wonder why you don't restor old Plymouth Arrow prostocks?
Excellent job, btw.
Rev.
hotrod98 09-03-2008, 08:30 AM After owning a funny car and four dragsters, I've been staying away from racecars. We're down to one Super Pro Firebird and my 70 Cuda Pro No E project. I just can't seem to get into the driving part of dragracing lately. That won't keep me away from the Vegas race in November though.
Do you know someone that owns a Plymouth Arrow Prostock?

when i first got in the mopar hobby 25 years ago , A guy from topeka ks named randy renyer had a hemi arrow , license plates suicide , very cool car!
sublime green 09-04-2008, 07:17 PM There's a guy around here that has one, its tubbed, 340 6 out of a totaled 70 t/a challenger, its a really neat car but i haven't seen him in a while and its probably not for sale.
Howie 09-04-2008, 07:48 PM Gotta make room for my car! That is if I can stop the modification process. Just bought a set of nascar hemi headers. Lets see what next.

good to see you brother , glad the wife let you out of the cellar.
hotrod98 09-09-2008, 11:30 PM Dane e-mailed me. My hollow aluminum Daytona wing will be here in a few days.
I think that my Janak fiberglass wing was a great wing, but the aluminum one will be even better.
Hopefully, someone will start making the steel noses eventually and I'll change it out as well.
Plan to get back on the car hot and heavy after we get back from the SEMA show.

I bought a steel nose , I dont have it yet , just a shell and beat up , but it's a factory original piece .
put this wing in your signature LOL
hotrod98 09-10-2008, 11:16 AM I'll see Gean Gregory at S.L.. He mentioned that he might start building steel daytona noses again. I'll ask.
Our color scheme on the bird clone will be a little different than yours. The color will be slightly darker and the decals will be black. The interior will be black.

just know that the one nose i have seen that gean built , fits like crap
It's on my buddy wayne perkins hemi . But it is steel ! and you can work it !
hotrod98 09-10-2008, 02:19 PM Gean sold about a hundred of those noses back in the eighties. Since you never see one for sale, you have to assume that most of them are on daytonas.
As for making it fit...I know a guy.

wayne new a guy too but it still fits like ass , not made right at all LOL and the hlps fit bad too , all the guts are his original stuff he hit a deer !
i would take one in a heart beat for my clone over a fiber glass one , but now i dont have to
bigblocksam 09-29-2008, 03:51 PM Hey Hotrod you done yet :os_dancing2:
Mopar_Muscle 03-11-2009, 02:52 PM I have to comment, I keep getting emails telling to stop in here and say hello, so here I am, now whats up your charger project Larry?
Mark
hotrod98 03-11-2009, 07:07 PM I had to put it on the back burner for a while to catch up on customer work. Those crazy customers think that their cars should come before mine. What's up with that?
I drove it earlier today...out of the shop and then back in. I just have to finish painting the front end and install it and then finish up the interior. I have everything to finish the car, but time. I did take a little time this weekend and painted our extra Superbird wing and installed it on our 69 runner. I kept the original wing that I have for our Superbird clone.
It's been a blast driving around town in the new wing car this week.
Mopar_Muscle 03-11-2009, 07:28 PM Right on, at least you have a mopar to work on that you own. Me, customer cars as well up to my ears.
I'm looking though for a '68 charger roller. I might have found one also, I'll keep you up to date.
In the mean time, I started collecting Lightnings, which isn't a bad thing either IMO.
Keep up the good work brother.
Mark
hotrod98 03-11-2009, 09:34 PM Mark, Didn't you have a mopar or am I thinking of someone else in Alaska?
I live in a world of confusion sometimes.
bigblocksam 03-11-2009, 10:18 PM
Hi Mark , hey hotrod! put the front on that daytona already . :tongueflap:
hotrod98 03-11-2009, 11:32 PM I worked on it a little today. I plan to put Sandra to work on it tomorrow brushing the bedliner on the floors for soundproofing. May try to get the headliner and package tray in this weekend. I'll work on it myself a little only on the weekends so as not to anger the customers. They all want their cars ready for show season. Go figure.
The "Roadwinger" has inspired me. :tongueflap:
Mopar_Muscle 03-12-2009, 01:19 AM Hey Rene, yeah Larry, same Mark here. I've had a few dif' cars in the past year or two already, now I have a collection of Ford trucks, Lightnings. Don't kill me yet, I'm hunting down a mopar again.
I really want a '68 charger cause if I get a '69 or '70, I'll for sure build a Daytona clone again and be screwed for the next 5 years building it and won't enjoy it, hahaha.
Mopars, love 'em or hate 'em, they in my blood still.
Good to see your coming along w/your projects though.
Mark
hotrod98 03-12-2009, 08:46 AM Hey Mark. Have you seen this pic? :)
Mopar_Muscle 03-12-2009, 01:26 PM Yeah, that car is sad. It's a Hans Ludke car, poor charger. Make a good, something......
hotrod98 03-12-2009, 03:19 PM Did he ever finish the transformation? Looks like he had the back glass and wing at least.
bigblocksam 03-13-2009, 10:26 AM The "Roadwinger" has inspired me.

The Daytona clone project had to go. It's being replaced by the Black Ice Superbird as we speak.
I'm finishing up the clone before the new owner comes to get it so I'll try to remember to post a few pics.
moparstuart 11-16-2009, 07:46 AM Inspired?
congrat's on the new superbird , real aero car owner now :grin::grin:
