Here's mine:'64 Sport Fury. Picture it with some OE-style chrome steel wheels instead of the Magnums and you'll have an idea of how she'll roll out this spring. There's also a Torker 440 sitting on the shelf, and either a 750 Holley or Edelbrock carb to go on in place of the Offy/2-4bbl setup-though it runs and idles quite well with that setup.

Yes I do really like Chargers and Road Runners but I love the 62 to 65 Max Wedge and Hemi cars. And the Max Wedge was street legal. Hot rod tested a 63 Belvedere 426 Maxie with the low 11.0 comp at 415 HP. With just the exh cutouts open and Cheater slicks it ran 12.69 at almost 112.. Now just think if they had todays tires in 63 ?? At 112 mph it could have run high 11's ! To me the Max Wedge cars were about the fastest street legal Mopars of the muscle car era. Now I always thought the 64 Hemi cars were race only and could not be tagged but I have heard a few 64 Hemi cars got tagged and were street driven. Course they made around 200 64 Hemi cars and they built about 2150 Max Wedge cars in 63. Ron

Guys,

here's a few pics from my old 65 Wagon. As you can see, I got a little carried away with the car, but it came out really nice. Unfortunately, I took ill near it's completion, and was forced to sell it. I heard it's in Pa and being finished by a retired firefighter. I terribly miss this car and wish I could have held on to it, but it's still in the 'chain' and I'm sure will make a big splash once completed.

One other thing: to the administrator of this site, someone needs to correct the "wrap" on these pages, as the images are loading left to right, instead of vertically...

It might be a problem on my end, but starting at pg 3, the display keeps 'expanding' to the right, forcing you to use the slider to 'find' the "next" toggle or page number. At page 8, there is a posting with images do not wrap and extend way to the right. Again, it forces you to hunt for the functional toggles.

Also, I can see my post in thread view, but am unable to see it by clicking through from the original thread...?

Here's a few more shots of the AWB 65 Coronet wagon.

I put a rollerized 500 inch Hemi in it with a 10-71 supercharger and a pair of 950 HP blower carbs, which was good for an honest 1000 HP at only 10% over.

I altered the wheelbase using the stock chassis, versus stubbing-in 2x3 steel, which produces the (non-factory-looking) nose-up rake, which I don't like (especially when driving). Using the stock frame produced a clean rake; lessened the sheetmetal work; and produced a near factory look when completed. To the non-informed, it looked just like it came from Mopar that way. I also slicked the firewall and removed the intrusive bump, which gave me another couple inched of engine setback.

IMHO, all of these old Mopars (I love them all) were a little "long in the tooth", which means they have just a little too much steel in front of the spindle to suit my taste. I've now got a 64 Polara that I plan on stretching in the near future and I'll keep you guys posted on how that goes. This one's a keeper.

Out back the wagon had a narrowed rear with Strange axles and 4:30 gears moving Hoosier 31 X 18.5 radials.

If I would have kept the car, the next modification would have been to chop 2 inches from the roof line (to bring the large rear gloss level with the door glass) and slanting the windshield back a few degrees to give a full-on nasty rake. Anybody out there got an old wagon they're interested in parting with ? ~{:>)

Here's a few more pics for your enjoyment.

What compression ratio do you use with a 10-71?

Southernman
06-18-2010, 04:48 PM
What compression ratio do you use with a 10-71?

The same as any other supercharged application; 8.5:1 is about optimal - unless you're a serious racer and after huge power for competition.

Some guys are now running in excess of 13-1 (static) with superchargers, which is OK if you have the right fuel, fuel delivery system, and cylinder sealing technology to support it (and the pocketbook I should add...)

Also remember, the "static" ratio is 8.5:1 but under dynamic conditions (on boost), that can increase to 12 or 13-1 very quickly.

I hope that answers your question. You gettin' ready to try one ?

khryslerkid
06-19-2010, 08:08 AM
Not really, just knew that you use a lower compression ratio but never heard just how low? Thanks for the imfo!

Have seen this car in my part of town a time or two. They are both being driven by the belt system and it is a stock bottom end. I think he does it with the right pully that would have them turning pretty slow. Crazy looking though!

You mean there is a car in that picture ? ~{:>)

Most of those "show only" cars hollow out the upper supercharger and just attach the upper unit through a home-made plate and single gear front cover. This reduces drag and allows the lower supercharger to get enough fuel to run (as in idle around shows etc), but not much else. It's about as impractible as you can get and I, personally, think it's borderline "cartoonish".

The last time I saw a set up like that was at Rockingham's Mopar at the Rock. Some guy had a really cool Dodge Dakota pickup with 2 blowers (mounted at 45' from center of the engine) and it really was impressive to look at. But that's about all, since it couldn't do anything but idle around the grounds and it was puking fuel any where he parked it. Money would have been better spent on a Vortec set up that would have been driveable and ripped serious et's at the track. But then, that's just my opinion.

On the other hand, there are some turbo-fed roots-style superchargers that are reasonbly well designed and they can be driven to some degree, however sizing intercoolers needed to be fully functional prevents them from becoming very popular (just not practicle or cost effective).

I'd much rather see a well set up blown application with a few inches removed from the cars top. Give me about 1 day with a sawzall and cutting torch and I could show you how to make that cream puff Jimmy really pop !

khryslerkid
06-19-2010, 12:02 PM
10-4 on the "cartoonish" !!!

I heard a story, (don't know how true), about this guy at a car show that he was attending, got pulled over by the local police, they had the car loaded up on a rollback, said it was unsafe to drive. Lack of vision to see where you are going. :)

Thanks, Kid. It's originally a Florida car with A/C. The pic makes it look better than it is, but it's pretty clean and a good driver. We towed it home to WI in March of '09, and my daughter and I have been tinkering with it since then. We drove it to the Iola Old Car show last Sat. It's not a show car by any means, but they had a promotion for people 25 and under who brought a car that was 25 years old or older. That got two of us in for free to park with like cars. They could be projects or whatever. The weatherman failed us, though, as we ended up driving home for 2 hours in the rain - with no wipers! It rained hard in spots, too, but we got home safely. Darn weather forecasters said a small chance of scattered showers. Ended up with the whole center of WI getting hours of rain - some places we drove through got 2-3". LOL Who needs stinkin' wipers anyway? Oh yeah, and the speedo isn't working yet, so that makes for more skilled driving as well - LOL.

We have a 440 in the garage waiting to be built for it, and I'd like to re-paint it the original white over dark turquoise. But for now we're just having fun working on it and driving it.

Thanks, HitIt. Here's the evolution since we've had the car. Pic one is in Florida on it's way home to WI in March of '09. Next one shows everything that was in the trunk when we bought it. After that is last summer when we were getting it on the road - new wheels and tires. The 4th shows it right after we swapped on the super stock springs and '68 non-tapered axle rearend this past May. We had the bars cranked way up in that one! The last pic is this past Sat. at the Iola show. It has a ways to go. The body and paint are not very good - from a previous owner. The body and paint don't do the pictures justice - LOL. But for the most part it's a rust-free car. Every nut and bolt has come off nice and easy so far - not rusted to Hades like a WI car would have.

Your just kidding right?

Try some "RainX" on the windshield till you get them wipers going :) Stuff works real good on motorcycle windshields and boats!

Don't put your car down too much. You made it home in the rain didn't you

Oh don't worry - I'm not putting it down. I just always like to let people know that the body work is by a previous owner - not me. I don't want people to think that I did it and think it's right. LOL

My wipers do work - but they aren't on there. When he painted the car, the other guy painted over the wiper pivots, so I have to get them cleaned out before I can bolt the wipers on. It hasn't been a high priority since I don't drive it in the rain (USUALLY that is!). Another reason I hadn't driven it in the rain was I didn't know if the car would have a bunch of leaks or what. I did find out it's nice and water tight - except for a dribble on my left foot under the dash. I think that came from a leaky wiper pivot seal (I have replacements to put on).

mrkinger - I don't know what it is about your car - the color, the wheel combo, or what, but that is just one beautiful looking Plymouth. I really like it. It may be the color of your steel wheels that just makes it pop to me.

Sorry I've been busy with the car,God it feels good to get back into some real horse power!!! She has a 440 30 over 10 1/2 to 1's 510 lift comp cam 2500 stall in a reverse manual 727 8 3/4 with 4.10s? I just had to pull over on the way home, wait for traffic to clear and put her out on this long straight. Well lets just say when the go pedal hit the floor the front seat lurched back, scared me while grabbin 2nd lunged again more creaking and cracking hit 3rd and left off, scary but you couldn't knock the smile off my face with a baseball bat!! After I got home I was looking to see why the seat felt funny, well the hard launch had striped the threads in one of the front bolts in the seat rail and bent the bolt (had to saw it off) This car is AWESOME!!! I'm still smiling:grin::grin::

Thanks, Steve, I didn't see you at Martin this weekend during the Chrysler Classic event. I watched a couple rounds of Max Wedge and actually grew the motivation to do some more on mine, lol. The quality of cars was tremendous. That was the highlight for me other than spending some time with my friends the Brewers, sold them some 4-speed stuff as usual. I spend all my time going to school and lately porting PT cruiser cylinder heads. If you go to the Mopar Nationals, I will be set up with Wes Leopold and Jerry Stein, so you know it will be all 62-65 stuff.

Later,
Joey

I've been on this site for a while and finally registered so I can post. Here is my '65 Coronet 440 four door sedan.Originally a 318 poly(I think, tag has a code 40),automatic,manual steering, tan with a white side sweep.I'm about ready to install a freshened later LA 318 with the column cable shifted auto. This car is super solid except for the outer drivers cowl in the usual spot! The last owner was running a 440 with a later 727 with a floor shifter. If the car stays ,I'm thinking a big block/4-speed conversion.

That was done at Willowbank Raceway (Mopar Sunday) a few years ago (previous owner), the car had a 440 6pack hood scoop back then.....didn't suit the car so i built the Hemi scoop.....could buy one anywhere at the time.
