Tire size question

Well Im new here on B bodies so first I wanna say Hello!
Seems like a great place to hang out and I recognize a few members here from moparts. Like Ron and Big Mike. Well my question is about rear tire size on my
64 Polara. I have 225/60/15's all around on 7 inch rims. I was thinking of going to 8's with some black steels like Ron on his 63 but I think I'm going to cheap out and just put some bigger tires on the 7 inchers I already have. My 2 choices
are 255/60 or 275/60 Im a bit worried that the 275's will rub though.
I know you have some 29x10.5 on your Fury Ron but after really looking at the room I have Im just wondering if those would fit I dont have the stock rear end I think its out of a 68 b body which I heard is 3/4" each side wider .any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are 275/60/15's on 8" Ramcharger wheels.Lots of clearence.Your wheel wells should be the same or close.

Welcome to this cool place. :) My rear is out of a 65 Plynouth and I am not sure if the 68 B-body is the exact same. But I would think the 275's will fit for you and they will look tuff on it. :yes: Ron

I have 275's on my '64 Polara. I'm using 8" steels. I'd actually like to go down in size if you are interested in the tires. I'm in San Jose. Where in CA are you?

I'm in the North bay. Novato.

I'm also using a rear from a 65 like Ron. I'm going to be running 15x8 steelies with 275/60's. I've seen several 64's and 65's running this combo with no fitment issues.

As far as the tires go..I have 225/60's back there now I just keep looking at them and keep thinking there aint much more room in there width wise.
I'm actually not sure what year the rear end is thats in it now. Just dont want to get stuck with some tires I cant use. That being said called the local tire shop and the guy offered to try the 275's and the 255's on for me they have both in stock. So thats the plan. Its good to have a plan.:yes:

Tried on some 275/60/15's and they fit like a glove. They really look good on the car no rubbing not even close enough to worry about it. I'm really happy with them. Even the guys at that tire shop were stoked.:grin:

Jeff, are those 225/60/15's in the front?

I have the same car (even the color is the same) with 255/60/15's in the front. I have a problem with the corner of the front tire rubbing the bottom edge of the front wheel opening of the fender while turning and backing.

Do you have this problem with the 225's? If you turn your wheels a bit, how much clearance do you have between the fender and the edge of the tire?

Next question. Do you have the stock strut rods in the car? And... what strut rod bushings are you using?

I have 225/60/15 in front no rubbing, If you are talking about the front edge at the bottom of the front wheel opening I have 2 fingers of space.
I do have a pretty big sway bar though that somebody put on it before the car was mine, they did a good job.Not sure what size it is but here is a picture. I also have KYB shocks.
I think that combo makes the front end pretty stiff. I dont know much about the
torsion bars I think they are stockers this car was an original 383 4spd car.
I did put new shocks in back and new leaf springs. I really like the look of it with the 275's in back. Post some pics of your car .

64cubed, I'm finally getting around to downsizing my tires. I'll be pulling the 275's off the rear and moving the 255's from the front to the back. I'm doing this mainly for drivability. I'm interested in 235's or 225's up front and wondered if you happen to be tripping over the ones you took off your car. Let me know if they are for sale.

BTW 275 fit great on my rear not good on yours?

Aside from driveability, my reason for downsizing tires was because I had tire to fender interference when backing with the wheels turned and braking at the same time. I currently have 255's up front.

The more I thought about it, the more I didn't want to downsize. I decided to trim a little off the front fenders. I know, I know... bold move. I took an inch off the front inside edge and you can't really even tell. I've got plenty of room now to keep the 255's up front and the 275's in the rear.

Jegs carries a tool to measure and come up with the right wheel and the right tire the first time around. The tool measures tires from 15" to 30" dia. It tells the max tire width, backspacing, wheel diameter and bolt pattern. It is in the back by the wheels. The tool is made by wheelrite.

Does it look like yours has been trimmed? The wheels sit very close to the front of the opening on these cars. Strange, but then again, these machines were designed with 14" wheels.

64cubed, with your wheels pointed staight ahead. How many fingers can you fit between the tire and fender down at the front bottom edge?

Its snug but I can fit 3 fingers to the knuckles.

a 225 tire is 8.86 inches wide.
a 275 tire is 10.83 inches wide.

as you car sits now you would need to have 1" clear on each side for the 275's to fit. I got my math from this website - http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/length_conversion.php
