Hemi spark plug wires

I need to replace my spark plug wires. Looking at hemi wire sets and seeing they cost about 160 dollars, I am hoping to go another route to replace them.

I have the insulators, rubber boots, and well caps. I was thinking about buying bulk wire and terminals then building them myself. But was wondering if I could use a universal set instead and just use the well caps?

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

So I guess what you mean is use a universal straight boot and push it down in the hole. I see no reason why that wouldn't work, however, pushing the boot on and removing it later might be a problem.

I have to wonder if the early Toyota Corolla 2TC plug insulators would work http://www.brdracing.com/images/ignition/3tc_plug_wires.jpg

Here they are at $21.00 a set.

Of course you would have to get two sets but they are cheap - and short. What I don't know is how easy it is to separate the boots from the wire.

I had a 72 911 and the long insulators were easily separable from the wire, but I don't remember if they are available as individual parts - and if they are I'm sure they cost a fortune. What's cool about that setup is the resistance remains constant no matter how long the wire is because the resistor is in the insulator and the dist connection with a solid core wire.

Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate having the ideas, I will check out the Toyota pieces.

Thanks again.

I like Meep's answer. I have searched the web on tests and engineering papers on plug wires. End result, the difference in performance can only be found on a dyno. The only real difference I could find was the resistance of the outer insulation to heat and crossover voltage. So if you can route them away from the pipes, and keep them from touching each other, then any middle-of-the-road wire should work. Dont buy the claim that its wound a thousand times with a conductor made of "Unobtainium".
