Looks like I would need #11 and #14 Mar......and thanks for posting. For some reason 69' was a one year deal with the ignition switch, thus pay out the ying yang.....

So how does the ignition lock come out of the switch?

Yeah that creamy dark will nock a guy on his rear......Tried that stuff during one of our ice fishing outings last year. I had to have the ol' lady pick me up at the shore and leave the Snowmobile left parked out by the shanty overnight. No way I would have ever found my way home in one piece

Pretty sure the tumblers in the lock is shot or close to it Stu. You put the key in and it's really loose as well as the key is able to move around up and down when it's engaged in the lock........

I had no idea you could pick up the switch at a local parts store.

I had dsd1967 offer to help and may have a decent switch and lock available. Every part I got from him has been top notch so far! So hopefully that pans out an he has one around. If not, I definitely will need to go one of the routes you guys have been nice enough to post

Thanks you guys. You all been a big help as usual.

IIRC ('68 though) if you unscrew the bezel from the front, the switch and lock come out of the back as one piece and it just slides out of the switch.

ill go to the garage and see if i still have the set and see if i can remember how i pieced it together.

Will, so my voyage out to the garage stirred my memory....it's just like i thought in the earlier post. unscrew the bezel (or screw in your case. lol) and the tumbler sits in the switch. there is a little hole in the threads where a dickie from the tumbler pops out and locks into the hole. (see pic)

i took a look at #11 and #14 on yearone, and it seems to be just about the same design, xcept the 69's assy looks to be a little longer. im assuming the same principle though.

Hey Prop....sorry to keep you hanging, but I've got good news. I have a 69 switch direct from the dash with key and the ignition light and some date code correct Ohio dust. It should clean up OK, but the ring has seen better days.

It looks like you've had plenty of help in the interim....everyone wants to see you get this car back on the road. I'll pm you to work out the details.

hey will good to see you get the dash together.looks great. I know this is a little late but maybe it might help some one else in a pinch.I did use a ignition switch from a mid 70"s dodge van, the wire harness plugs right into it and fits in the ignition hole on the dash. i still have the one i took off my van just in case.

All I can say is..............It's Fricken Cold Here!!!!!! People were wondering where winter was, well suprise...Got a kick in the face of it this morning when the air temp and windchill were well below zero. Didn't catch the temp or windchill but I know it's below zero seeing as soon as you walk out the door, the snot instantly freezes in your nose. Nice thermometer eh?

Well been off for the past few days and have had a lot of time to pluck away on the roadrunner...The doors, fenders, hood and trunk lid are pretty much done. I have one more guide coat to block out yet but I think after that, any other leveling will be taken care of by the paint and then wet sanding. I still have to bottom 2/3 of the quarters to skim and block..7 1/2 feet of vertical fun.

Figured I mention the 71' GTX in the pic's. Guy who owns it, bought it himself brand new in 1971. It is a factory 4spd, air grabber car with the hemi orange paint, original everything including the 440. The car has 54,000 miles on it. Pretty neat huh!

Progress!!!!!!!

Hey thanks Fella's!

You bet those are the rims I swapped out with you Jay. They look pretty good on the car besides the wrangler ATR and destination A/T rubber that's on them LOL. Heck of a week to go back to work. Making good ice at least. Hopefully i'll be out on the lake this weekend..

At this point i'm kind of glad the original engine was long gone from the car Dave5237. It made it a lot easier to make the decision to go with a mod's to upgrade the car. I have nothing at all against Original cars, luv'em, but it has honestly a lot of fun bringing this car back, picking and choosing all the options and upgrades I want on the car without feeling guilty.

Nothing like a warm crackling fire on cold winter night Ron!! One part of winter I enjoy. Send some of that snow this way.

Found a little time to putz around with some roadrunner stuff this weekend...Splash shields. It's kind of tinker toy stuff compared to some of the other surgery I had to perform on the car, but hey...at least I got to do what I truely love about restoration---Metal Work!! After a couple hours dinking around with these, I really started pondering that I need to find me another mopar to start cutting/welding/grinding on...hehehehhehe!

my shields.......covered in factoy undercoat and rust...beautiful! Theeeeeeeee best way i've found to get factory undercoating off is not torches and scrappers, wirewheels or some funky spray can of magic from eastwood, even the media blaster fights with the stuff. What works? A I R N E E D L E G U N.. I'd say 2 minutes a side, and all the black tar devil was popped/pushed off the shields like butta.

Thanks! Sounds like a good weekend Dave. I'm jealous. Wish I could find some time to hit up the ice. Heck, i'd be happy if I could just take the ski-doo for a 1/2 hour spin down the trails. Weather is just garbage this year. Gearing up for sturgeon spearing, but that isn't for another few weeks....Uggg.

I bought the Ingersol Rand model off tool topia. Works great for exfoliation rust and undercoat, but doesn't do much for the fine surface rust. Grinder/High speed sander is my weapon of choice on that.

Good to hear someone is doing good out on the ice!

LOL! Thanks Dave! Yeah it's quite the journey going through the whole thing. I'll openly admit that this car would not be where it is today if it wasn't for this great website and all the great folks on it. Hey guys...Kind of off subject here, but I thought it was pretty neat.....

First off I can never match the hidden treasure skills of Detmatt...Indiana Jones I tell ya.

Yesterday I responded to a Craigslist ad for "War Stuff". I spoke breifly with the older gentleman and went over to his place tonight to check out what he had. Turns out the 90 year old guy is a WWII vet and was in the Army Air Corps as an Aircraft Mechanic. He didn't have much stuff left, but still had these acft gauges below. I thought they were pretty neat so I picked them up for $40 bucks. No idea if they're worth anything but what a huge piece of history to have.

Top center is a Tach from a P-51D Mustang. One on the left is a Coolant Temp Guage from a P-38E Lightning. Bottom center is a Pilot Deviation Indicator from a B-17G and the one on the right is a Landing Gear Indicator from a B-25G Mitchell. Gave me some old Army tech guides/installation manuals as well as cockpit views to show the guages. The guages are stamped for their acft as well

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/w1-3.jpg

Pretty cool eh? Best part was just shooting the breeze and having a beer with the guy.
Being a USAF aircraft mechanic vet and an aviator myself, the old chap and I had quite a few stories to share..I had a few good ones but his were like something out of a movie.
Kinda neat.....two vets from two distant generations talking like we new each other for years. It was a good time.

Thought about making up an instrument panel for them and mounting it out in the man cave........So thanks for checking out the off subject post.... just thought it was pretty cool.

That's cool stuff Prop. My Dad was in the Army Air Corps in the 2nd WW and was stationed on Saipan. He was a radio tech working on the B-29s I think. Lots of stories to be sure. That generation is almost gone and will be a pity when they are.

Good to hear from you Roger. Hope everthing is going good on your end. I hear you on the gauges. Can't help but think about all the crazy senario's that must have played out for the pilots that used them and the planes they were sitting in.

As far as the rims, I traded Wannadrag for the steel cragers that are on the car now..I now a lot of folks like them, but didn't really fit my tastes. You might be seeing them on a 68' GTX soon by the sound of it.

I needled my splash shields also and found out the rust was just too bad and junked them. And after looking at the prices of replacements, got a headache and made my own that actually fit correctly. I always wondered who at chrysler decided to do this instead of just putting a inner wheel well in the car. I also started saving my old needles and tig welding a blob of steel on the end instead of constantly buying new ones.

I hear you there!! I actually got a set of new replacements I picked up down at Jefferson last spring, but I think I got desperate to fix some old rotton metal and brought the old ones back. I was stunned how pricey they are. Must have been quite a project whipping up all those funky angles to match the bolt pattern..Got any pic's how they turned out Russ?

They are all blasted full of undercoat now so no pics. All it took was about 8 hours with cardboard templets and crawling in and out about 200 times with the metal to make adjustments lol. And recently I took in trade a 71 Z28, 454, 5 speed hot rod as partial payment on a nova I had. So of course they are both being worked on at the same time. I just cant leave shit alone, the car was fine the way it was but wasnt mine as I put it to the old lady, have to change some stuff you know. And yes just because I have mopars doesnt mean I dont like other brands also. Chrysler never gave me a ring so Im not totaly faithful to them. And to top it off Im also building a engine test stand to fire my engines on before they go in, took well over a hour to explain the logic of this one to the females living here who think all mechanical stuff works perfectly all the time lol.

Prop, Jefferson, WI? Man, that's a big swap, but lots of walking to do with all the camo gear, and other crapola I saw there. Ironically, that was the only thing I did buy at Jefferson was a set of E Body splash shields.

Good work on the metal fab.

Welder, the splash shields are made of plastic on an E Body so yeah, they got it right on those :D

Nothing wrong with owning another brand Russ...I know some folks around here are die hard mopar or no car, but nothing wrong with having a decent ford/chev in the garage. Myself I would love to have a 58' Impala or a 41' Willy's. In the end Mopar is my first choice though. I gave up the idea of trying to explain car logic to women along time ago. Kinda like the wife trying to explain why it's necessary to own 11 pairs of shoe's. The information is there, but it doesn't click. At least she understands that cars are something I love and gives me my space with them. Sounds like those splash shields were a heck of a task!

I hear you on the Jefferson show Fish!!! Honestly they should start calling that the annual Camaro and Mustang show. For a guy looking for Mopar parts, it's like a needle in a haystack. Not to mention all the absolute junk people drag there and try to sell as something special. Not like it was several years back. The splash shields I found at a chevrolet tent. They had a sign on them saying "mopar tin" with an unhappy face on the sign. The guy said they got ordered by mistake. I was happy to take them off their hands.

Well boys........after wrapping up that last bit of block/prime on the quarters over the weekend, I can say it's time for me to hand over the reigns on the roadrunner to the painter.....don't know what i'm gonna do with myself :-(

Ron, you know me too well buddy. Didn't take very long and i'm already tearing into more stuff. I tell ya....once a guy gets a momentum going, it's hard to stop. Or maybe i'm just compulsive? LOL! I ripped the heater box to pieces, blasted what metal I could and started to replace all the seals. Got a new heater core waiting to go in as well. One thing I also decided to do is convert the ammeter to a volt gauge. I should have thought it out a bit earlier, but decided to go with the Powermaster 140 one wire altenator, which pretty much requires a bypass or conversion (Fire hazard). So....ripped the dash back apart tonight and pulled the cluster. I'm about halfway done and will post some pic's tomorrow of the full conversion.

Thanks again guys! Now to play the waiting game.

It's funny you bring up "publishing a book" on the thread Roger. The wife was just hounding me tonight about this thread turning into a novel..LOL. She said to name it "going crazy...gone broke" LOL. Have to give her credit, thought it was pretty funny as well as accurate.

Pretty good title there. I was going to suggest,
"Dr. Will Strangelove. Or, How I learned to start welding and love the bomb."

Awesome work, can't wait to see the shiny side.

Now that folks are bringing it up Dave....I'll look into this. Maybe get a couple dozen put together and send out to the folks that have been helping out, adding their 2 cents, and been with along the way. Add all the posts on the thread, maybe a few more pic's I haven't added to the thread and possibly add in more in depth descriptions along the way..

It would be very interesting Will. Both as a book itself and also the process of converting a forum thread to book format.

I have a post that went monster sized on a hunting/fishing forum that's over 3.5 million views. I've had many people ask me about turning it into a book but I simply wouldn't know where to start.

This roadrunner project you have here I think could be captured in book form well enough.

Glad to meet another aviation guy on here..Flying them, fixing them, drawing them, and just talking about them...pretty much a nut about them. My nickname I aquired in the Air Force. So I said I would post on the ammeter to Voltmeter conversion, so here they are....

Just to recap just a bit, I'm going this route because I'm going to a powermaster 140 one wire alternator as well as I don't want to sit and worry about this car going up in smoke

First off a couple pieces of the old ammeter....Pretty nuts isn't it?? This car had a 50 amp alternator when I pulled it out (nothing special), and who knows how close this came to lighting the dash up in flames.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a1-9.jpg

Check out the heat affected zone on this....Obviously this metal got pretty hot!

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a2-9.jpg

Got a little a head of myself before pulling out the camera, but this is the Sunpro 2" Voltmeter (P/N CP8205), with it's guts ripped. To pull out the old meter, take off the two pal nuts for the fuel gauge (face plate overlaps the face plate for the ammeter), then take off the nuts for the ammeter..walla!
you'll need to drill out two very small rivets to seperate the factory faceplate from the ammeter. I used a cutting wheel to cut slots in the voltmeter case. Made the sealed unit come apart real easy.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a3-9.jpg

The center to center holes n the back of the cluster assembly are further apart than the sunpro studs, but the voltmeters studs are smaller so they slide right down in the holes..

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a4-8.jpg

Being the studs of the volmeter ride real close to the inside of the cluster housing holes, I covered a good chunk of the studs with heat shrink as well as liquid electrical tape on the transition just to make sure there is no chance it can arc to the housing

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a5-6.jpg

I cut the original shorter needle off the sunpro at its base, cut the old one of the factory ammeter and used some JB Kwik Weld to secure in place on the new meter.
I also had to trim down a little finger on the plastic meter housing about an 1/8" of an inch which is used to hold the original sunpro face plate from sitting on the electrical wiring/solder on the unit. Makes the mopar faceplate stick out a bit too far.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a6-5.jpg

I had to do some trimming on the original faceplate with a dremel to fit the meter in correctly. One this meter is secured from the backside, it doesn't budge so I didn't secure in any other manner from the inside. Also the face place is overlaped by the fuel gauge faceplate, so that hold it in place as well.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a7-4.jpg

Here's how she looks with the cluster lense installed...You cannot notice any kind of modifications from the outside..The need can be adjusted for a different starting point by just turning a little cam on the backside of the magnet on the guage. The needle right now sits a bit higher than the other bottomed out gauges. Not really that noticable at all.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a8-2.jpg

This is at 12.75 volts...Like I mentioned you can adjust the needle starting point on the voltmeter... I set mine up to read like this being the powermaster puts out a regulated 13.2 volts and that should center the needle in the gauge. Also being the studs are a bit undersized for the holes, you can twist the unit one way or another when loosing it up from the backside and tweek the needle to meet center if need be

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a9-2.jpg

Here's the back...The heat shrink runs right up to the top of the nut. It also slides through the through wall grommets in the bracket, thus no arc's. The bracket came with the voltmeter for securing the gauge in a housing, I just cut off the ends. I'll probably dabble on some liquid electical tape on the bracket around the washers as well. Like mentioned, the through wall grommets work great for protecting a short.. I'll run another nut on top and a star washer to secure the wires.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a10.jpg

A good idea to do on the backside is write on a + and -, being the positive is opposite what the factory has stamped on the back of the case. I also indicated the change over seeing you never know if the car may fall in someone eles hands someday.. I will take the two original wires that use to run to the ammeter, solder them together and heat shrink over. I also plan on drilling out the male/female connection in the bulhead for the wire coming in, run the wire straight through, solder together and heat shrink install a inline fuse.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/Roadrunner%20Resto%20Stage%201/a12.jpg

So there it is.......If you were thinking about spending the $150-$200 after shipping with Redline (nothing against them), here's another option where you'll spend about $17 bucks on the voltmeter and maybe an hour or two depending on your skill level. I know for me this really gives me a good piece of mind I don't have to worry about any issues in that area any more. Hope it helps some one out someday....

Reminds me of a story of my Dads where he said they would send the new guys to supply to get a bucket of propwash and have the newbies running all over base looking for it.
We did the same thing for newbie radio operators, we sent them looking for a pint of "frequency grease" LOL

I obtained the nickname "D-bag" in the Corps. No, not that kind of 'D' bag. The kind of device that holds a parachute. I was making a jump at Ft Bragg with the Army doggies and the Navy Corpsman who jumped out before me was an accomplished skydiver. He had jumped out of the 141 and left his static line flopping all over the place. Me being a good Marine, jumped out and tucked my chin to my chest, trapping the previous line. Well, about 8-10 feet of 1 inch nylon rope zipped across my neck and then the "D-Bag" attached to it, hit me in the side of the face and almost knocked me out. It did knock my helmet off at 1200 ft. When I got to the ground, after untwisting my risers, I could feel my neck burning. I had a 4x6 rug burn on my neck. My Gunny couldn't resist laughing his ass off and calling me "d-bag" for the rest of my time there. Gotta love your fellow serviceman. LOL

Yea Will your lucky that blast didnt send you over the side, the fall from those ships isnt easy to survive from. I was a destroyer guy in the navy and had a close call one night on the way to the gulf. Me and anoughther guy were on fantail watch one night, it was rough that night but didnt seem horrible out. Out of nowhere the biggest wave Ive ever seen covered half the ship. Somehow we got slammed into the rear cannon and managed to grab the end of the gun. That one little stroke of luck saved us from being lost at sea for good. Of course we were the ones watching for overboards that night so who would have reported it. And here I sit messing with old cars now lol.

Wow....You're a lucky man Russ. That's nuts. Never had to worry about falling off a ship, being I was USAF. I got a tour of the USS Roosevelt and saw what the USN calls home at sea. Not for me, don't know how you boys do 6 months of that at a clip. I'll stick with the old G.I. tent and a 5 foot cot, parked in the sandbox..At least a guy has a little more space to himself.

Little work done here recently, while I count the drawn out seconds till the RR is painted. Riped apart the heater box, blasted all the metal doors/back tin, painted those with hi-temp cast blast, and installed a new heater core. Blew a whopping $3 bucks on some extreme weather weather stripping seal that I cut to fit. Adhesive backed but I still ran a bead of Gorilla snot weatherstrip glue along the back. $3 bucks sure beats the $30-40 bucks some folks are charging for a heater box seal kit.

The two wires off the heater blower motor are hacked. One dark green, the other Black. I'm guessing the green goes to the heater blower motor resistor in the front of the box. The black to ground? Anyone confirm this?

Here's a couple pic's. Didn't get too liberal with the camera on the rebuild. Pretty self explainatory..

LOL...They're coming Dave. I'll find some time to get down there this week..
I checked out some test sample panels for the hood stripe paint, that the painter whipped up for me. She should supposedly be pushed in the booth in the next day or two for those to be layed on.

The rears are 15x7 with 3.5 backspace. Actually Weldwheel measurement includes the thickness of the flange, so if you measure from the mounting pad on the backside to the lip its real close to 3 inches. It had 275/60R15 BFG which fit perfectly without rubbing.

Its funny you should say that about letting it go. I saw your car and decided to post and pulled up the pics of my old Road Runner, which I haven't seen in few years, and realized how much I miss it.

Thanks Matt! As far as the hours....Starting from plain metal (what it was like when it left my garage) All the filing, hammer, spooning, skim, sand, block, prime, guide and so on would be around 140-160 hours on my part i'm guessing. The body Shop also billed in 23 hours on body. As far as the actual painting (which wasn't me at all) I'm being billed for 17 hours for spray of primers/sealers/paints/clears as well as wet/color sanding and polishing. I know there giving me a super good deal on that end.

With the engine, it is slow going. I already have a blueprint/game plan on the engine and have bought some of the components. I've been holding off on moving on the engine till all the meat and potato's with the paint and upholstery costs came rolling in. You know as well as I that whatever you may think it's gonna cost X's it by three and you'll probably be close. Plan is to get the block down for machining including bore/ridge reeming, deck, notching, oil sump mod and ARP crank studs to be installed hopefully in the next month or two. I'm in no rush, plus there's the whole money thing on top of that.

Blanchards......No flipping way Jay. Ever since the old man died years ago, that place is in the toilet. I threw a rod and junked some valves thanks to those clowns with the Coronet. I had them assemble the lower assembly to save some time, being I was on leave. When I pulled the pan, turns out the connecting rod cap nuts where hand tight and almost half of the rest of the nuts were sitting in the oil pan. Sorry to hear they screwed you as well. I use to take blocks to Automotive in Appleton, but their prices are now in orbit. Way out of line, Plus that Jamie over in the autobody supply department thinks he is Chuck Foose or something. Super Arrogant, but has no clue what he's doing (usually how it works)

Block work is being done by Appleton Crank.

So are you happy with how the two piece floor came out after it was all said and done? I am up in the air on a one piece or two, really all I need is the center section that drops in right after the rails. Considered just making one with a bead roller and fab it all togther using seperate pieces to recreate the drop in, what you think.

Propwash
02-22-2012, 09:00 PM
I guess that all depends what you're shooting for buddy. If you're going for a perfect factory appearance and plan on having mirrors under your car at shows, go with the one piece. If you don't mind a weld seam being somewhat visible from underneath, go for the 2 piece. I'm happy with the resluts of the 2 piece. As far as the amount of work to change them out, I would say it's about a horse a piece. Obviously more welding with a 2 piece, but more metal to remove as well as some structure jigging with a one piece.

If I was in your shoe's and didn't have a large area to replace and had the skills/equipment/material to make a patch, I would do so. Save yourself the money if you can. God knows there's other things on the car that can suck that up in a hurry. Just be sure to use the same gauge of metal as the factory being it's a uni-boby and part of the cars core/support structure is through the floor

Thanks Rev! As far as the inserts, went with the same Matte finish as the stripes. Thought about an offset color like red on the insert grill's, but was thinking that might break it up a bit too much.

One Choice i'm trying to get hashed out is the wheels...We all see this same topic, seems like on a monthly basis and now having to pick my own I can see why. Here's what I have it leveled down to....Whatcha think?

US MAGS WHEEL Standard..Not too sure if I like the sharp rise on the spokes. From an angle they look like flat straight spokes

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/w1-5.jpg

American Racing Torq-Thrust II.. Love the looks, but a straight on profile they seem not to fill into the center quite enough. This is the wheel I'm really swaying towards

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/w3-1.jpg

American Racing Torq-Thrust D.. Fill in nice, pretty beefy, but not huge on the suttle flat machined 2 step lip coming in.

http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy152/propwash4/w2-2.jpg

Dang it...Most size backspace they have on those wheels is 16MM...Arrr, back to the drawing board

****Little update****** Guy I talked to on the phone at the kinda local (down by Madison) discount tire store was wrong.
I emailed MG and they said the offsets are O, -6 and 13MM, not backspacing. I just need to do the math.

So if I go with this wheel a 15" x 8" 13MM offset i'll have about 4.5" backspacing. Perfect!

The fronts (15" X 7") only come in 0 and -6MM offset, so 0 offset being a 3.5" Backspace...Is that enough backspacing for the front wheels??
Or would it be wise to go 15" x 8" with the 4.5" BS up front?

Backspace is the distance from the back of the wheel to the hub mounting face.

Offset is how far off from the center of the wheel hoop the hub face is.

hmmmm, sooooo.....???

Backspace is the distance from the back of the wheel to the hub mounting face. (thickness of the hub itself?)

Offset is how far off from the center of the wheel hoop the hub face is. (Depth of the rim; to the front of da hub face?)

Propwash

LOL......Confusing isn't it Mario..Backspacing is part of offset. Yeah, those goofy clowns down in Madision....I think they really do enjoy using my tax dollars for toilet paper.

To explain offset, with a car wheel with 0 offset, the hub/mounting surface is centered (widthwise) in the middle of the rim. A postive offset, the hub/mounting surface is further to the outside of the rim. Negative, hub/mounting surface is towards the inside of the wheel past center..

Backspace.....Take an 8 inch wheel, say the offset is 0 (hub/munting surface is centered/widthwise). That would mean it has a 4" Backspace (half the wheel width) If the wheel had a +13MM offset (about 1/2") that would mean that rim now has a 4 1/2" backspace. Vise versa for negative. If the wheel had a -13MM offset, now the hub/mounting suface is deeper down in the rim 1/2". So 1/2" - 4", you would have a 3.5" backspace.

Make sense or do you now have a bigger headache?

Thanks again for lending your idea on the rims! I've decided to go that route...Keep the meaness in it!! Question is now, do I go with the 17" like is on the Charger or should I stick with the 15" and taller tire sidewall, like is on the car now?

17's = rice burning doof doof car..............:jerk:

Thanks Will!!! it does make more sense to me now. i had to read it a few times (and a few more yet :icon_dwarf:) but i do get it.

Im glad i could help in your decision!! those rims will look bad-freakin-ass!!!

re: wheel/tire size; few things- do you want restomod/pro touring look or stockish? then the ride height, you want it lowered or standing up taller?

perhaps a combo of the two? 16" with a mid-thick sidewall....got plenty of room in those wheeltubs to fill up!!!

and with a 512, you'll def need ALOT of contact patch!!! :steering:

Yup! that's just what i was thinking! the full on chrome may take away from the sinister look...

X 2... I agree! We all love the chrome but the charcoal along with it makes the sinister look mean and lean, with a added sparkle with the chrome... Ive seen these before because i keep going back and looking, if they just had a tad bit more "dark" in them.. JMO

Man Prop, I share your dilemma. I'm a sucker for bright chrome with black but also think the grayed or charcoal look would look very cool with your new black stripes. good luck with that. BTW, I think 17's still look great on a Roadrunner, bigger than that, they start to not look right IMO. Have you tried the wheel simulator on this website.

The closest you can get is a 70 RR but you can try all kinds of combinations with your black color.

Thanks a bunch Daryn...That wheel sim is pretty damn cool. I must have spent an hour playing with the different combo's. And like Ron said, how is your bird coming along?

So...Going with the 17's on the bird. They actually work out pretty well with the tire height/width I wanted for the car. I'm actually going with Coy's for the wheels. They are identical to MB's that Mario recommended (thanks again!!!!), just that they come with the backspacing i'm looking for.

Here's a Chevelle with the Coy's, 17" rims and a similar color combo on the car. I plan having a bit more sidewall on my tires than this guy. Pending the outcome of a supposed Major snowstorm, hopefully I'll have the car back Tuesday/Wednesday.

I love the black with black matte stripes, your car looks amazing prop, also like the dark grey torque thrusts in 17s, with a tire that has a little more sidewall like you mentioned rather than the (rubber band tire look) will look awesome with the sinister theme that looks like your successfully pulling off. In my opinion 17s with the right tires doesnt look out of place at all on muscle cars, I put 17s on my 66 coronet convertible with a thicker sidewall and have got a lot of compliments from the older crowd that generally don't care for the bigger wheels. Well anyway just wanted to compliment you on your car and the tons of pictures you took (wish I had taken half the pics you did when I restored mine).

Thanks a bunch crlush..You know it seems everything else on the car was so dang easy to pick out, till I got to the rims. Tough decision. But I guess rims are like a haircut...not really the main flash of the car, but if they're screwy looking or way off course, destroys the look of the car. Good to hear they went well on your Coronet! Ever though our cars are a few years apart and have different bodies, I think they share the same general look/platform.

crlush
02-27-2012, 05:55 PM
I think the rims/tires and stance really make or break the look of a car, like the pic of the chevelle above, the rims are sweet but theres not enough tire there like you mentioned, doesnt look bad but it doesnt look quite right, also would look better if it was a tad lower(mambe an inch) so theres not as much space between the tire and wheelwell. well im shure with the suggestions you have been getting that you will get it right, I really enjoyed reading about all the work you have done on your car.

Propwash
02-27-2012, 09:31 PM
Totally agree crlush...As for the low profile sidewalls, thought it was pretty hilarious one members put it as "riding around on rubber bands". Once I get these on, you guys please do me a favor and slap me one if the car ends up having a ricer look. Thanks again for taking the time to go through the thread, glad you enjoyed it. From what I can see on you avtar pic, you '66 Coronet ragtop looks great with the 17's.

Daryn, Hows yours coming, getting close?

Hey Ron and Prop,
Yeah thats a pretty cool simulator. I was also using it to try to figure out what color to eventually use.
As for my bird, I got a pretty nasty surprise from the body guy after they took off the paint and undercoating. Car went from a body tweaking/painting project to a complete rescue. Car was totally camouflaged everywhere. The guy I bought it from totally lied to me about the condition. Oh well, That's what I get for diving head first into something I had no prior experience in. I'm just glad I have the means to make the car right. I intend to drive it to Texas when I get it finished and "drop in" on him. At least to face him and call him an SOB in person. My car got new fenders, quarters, drivers floor. trunk floor, rear valance, core support, new hood and other pieces. They even put caulking on the underside and put coating on it to disguise the floor.
Ironically, the guy who is doing my car had another 69 RR in the shop so when all the AMD metal showed up, they were able to make all the critical measurements and original radius comparisons. The AMD metal wasn't even close in some places. they had to cut off pieces off my original metal and fabricate it onto the new stuff. The car looked like Frankenstein to get it to look correct, Lots of cutting and messaging. But you know what that's like right Prop?
Anyways, it won't be ready until at least probably September at this point. So, I traded in my truck and bought a Challenger. Now I won't feel stupid wearing my FBBO shirts while driving a Chevy truck. LOL Talk about sacrilegious!!

Propwash
02-28-2012, 08:59 PM
Wow! Sorry to hear it Daryn. Good to hear you're bringing her back to all her glory. As far as the criminal that pulled that fraud on you, if you want some company to go down to Texas with you, i'm game. Just to put a bottom feeder in his place for something like that would be priceless.

Good to hear you have an able body shop to tackle such a task as well as having an original '69 to base it off. I sure do know what you mean on that AMD metal Daryn...LOL. As we all seen on this thread and others, some stuff fits OK, other AMD stuff is like you have base material to start with and you have to modify it from there to make it work.

Congrat's on the new Challenger! Hope you enjoy it. They're great cars. I'll be honest and share I also have a Chevy truck. I'll be honest again and say I enjoy the truck and have had nothing but good luck with it. I see those new Challenger's sitting on that lot and think "man I wish". Problem is that I need a truck. For hauling, work, camping, hunting, getting in the woods and it takes everything I dish out to it. Had a new Dodge truck once back in the late 90's. Sorry to say it was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I brought it back under the Lemon Law...Ugggghhh

Can't wait to see your revived bird once she hit's the pavement come fall. I guess this way, at least you know now exactly what you got. It's just too bad that sack of meat ripped you off, making you believe the car was something it was not. With the pieces you have in place now, she'll be better than ever

Ron 73
02-28-2012, 09:21 PM
Daryn, I to am sorry to hear of this mess, id like to say i cant imagine what kind of mood this put you in the day you found out... Something similar happened to me once with a 72 Chevelle, mine even included the frame.. Sucks is a nice way to put it, I am glad though your chins up ready for the battle and i hope with the rest of this project it gos as smooth as can be! By the sound of it, one nice new bird on the way.. I don't know if going there and calling him a SOB would be the way id go, I think i would have to drive in and tell him to come out and look just what his attitude toward people and greed created, THEN i would leave it up to your imagination to finish the conversation, at least 50 or so feet from the bird. Good luck my friend, and enjoy the Challenger. http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd514/ron19731/thumbs.gif

02-29-2012, 12:02 PM
Well, thanks guys, I appreciate all the "positive waves" (Oddball/Kellys Heros). LOL Yup, Loving the new Challenger. 5.7, manual 6sp with a 3.92 rear end. They really thought out the car well. Mine has the redline 3 coat paint with no stripes with chrome 20's. Very clean looking. I hear you on the need for a truck Prop. I needed one, and I too had good luck with mine. However, I just bought a house in Florida and am relinquishing most of the running of my company to my son. So, I don't need to haul stuff through a foot of snow anymore. I also heard all the horror stories on the dodge trucks of the 90's. Loved the looks of them tho.
As far as the deception of my car, I hold myself mostly responsible for being a trusting soul. I should know better, I mean, I'm in business for myself for Christ sakes. I'm not sure what motivates a person to go to such lengths to deceive another person, but I do believe in "what comes around, goes around". I'm sure that whether or not I ever go there and confront him, he will be somehow adversely affected by life in general. I just think it would be worth it to see his face when having to man up to his deception.

Car was looking pretty good last time I saw it. My guy didn't like the door gaps on the doors, so he added about 3/16 inch to the doors to close the gaps. The fit and finish should definitely be better than new. He's definitely a detail oriented type.
Anyways, enough of hijacking YOUR thread. Your car looks fantastic. You are making many of the decision that I would be making as far as color combos and wheels. As a matter of fact, I might still paint mine black, something I was deciding not to, because of living in this dirty town. Your black stripes are so subtle they kinda catch you off guard. Very cool. Keep up the great work and thank you for your concern. You too Ron!!

Daryn

P.S. Did you ever look at the Black Chrome 17's from Coy? I think they might look really cool on your car. Just a suggestion.

Propwash

I'm sure you're are right, what comes around...goes around. He'll get his in the end. Still a shame someone knowingly hoses a fellow person like that. I guess he's the one that has to look in the mirror everyday.

So....Little update with the car. After a circus act with the Year One headliner that I won't go into, the uphostery shop called today and said she's finished. Tomorrow morning, after several long months, the bird will be home. Pic's coming tomorrow!

Thanks, my own design on the grill. I was gonna go big I tell ya, manufacturing/sales/etc.

Actually I was, I had a good sale dialog open with cabelas cooking and cutlery purchasing dept.

I chose the route of the day job working for somebody elses company.

Maybe someday if I grow a pair or once I have the kids growed up so I don't have so much to risk financially.

How's that black bird?

I can see why Dave...That is a great design! I'd buy one! Heck of a lot better than some of the garbage they're selling in the stores these days. Till you release those to the world, I guess i'll be sticking with the ol' Weber.

that is a fine looking car! you should be proud of the work you have done you saved that car. not many would have gone that far, good work

:icon_thumright: Thanks a bunch buddy!

I just found your thred Prop. This is most absolutley outragesouly awesome project and detail i have ever ever seen. I have been reading it for 3 days now after work and im on page 38, not going to cheat and look at the finished product yet i just jumped to the last page to comment only. I am at stages on my 69 now that you have posted, trunk and cowl, front end ect... I needed a little inspiration because i was feeling down and overwhelmed on mine. This is a HUGE inspiration and now im motivated again. Wow im pumped and hope i can do half the job that ive seen you do so far. Thanks for all the good work and detailed pics. Much appreciated. Just noticed you also have 68 Coronet and 69 rr. We have great taste i have a 68 Bee tribute and making my 69rr tribute and also a 70rr tribute.

Glad the bird could toss some wind in your sails 68bee. Keep pegging away man! One day at a time....You'll get there!! When she starts to weigh heavy, shut the garage door and crack open a cold one. Tackle her again the next day.. I appreciate the kind words and thanks for taking the time to read through the Plymouth novel..LOL. I'm happy to see it's motivating other folks to bring these wonderful cars back. Quite the collection of cars you have. It's pretty funny we have twin, twin cars. Looks like i'm gonna have to find a 70RR to catch up..LOL.

Best wishes moving forward on your '69. Keep up the hard work and i'm sure someday soon we'll be gazing upon your freshly resurrected Roadrunner.

As far as the Blackbird Dave........little bit of progress

Dash is in!! Not the most fun job to do, being it is cumbersome (like trying to stuff a fridge in the dryer cumbersome). My advice would be is to get the top lip resting and start the 5 bolts running across. Then install the two side mounting bolts, move on to tighten the top 5 bolts.

Emblems are on...Whewwww! Glad the little paper template I made from the rotton old doors worked well. Hood inserts are in..

Thought this was kind of a neat pic......So, to the guys doing your own blocking/sanding, just when it feels the bones in your hands are about to break and someone drove a railroad spike in your elbows...Keep sanding!! and then sand some more..

It pays off:

absolutely incredible, that finish is as good as you can get! I'd love to see that paint in person.
