Dipping?Charg68 05-18-2010, 09:02 PM I wanted to see what everyones opinion was about acid dipping a body? I have heard things about dipping, but would like to hear more comparisons. 66_B_Body4ever 05-18-2010, 10:33 PM Well, there is no better way of completely removing rust from a body, but along with that comes the complete removal of all the factory seam sealer, expandable foams etc. Perhaps the biggest drawback is the fact that all the factory electro-deposition primer/paint will be removed. Unless you can dip your car again, you will be leaving alot of bare metal exposed forever as conventional spraying cannot reach the areas factory e-coat can. One other problem I have seen is leftover acid not properly flushed out of the pinchwelds seeping out after refinishing...ouch. Muscle Car restorations can offer the full meal deal for acid dipping/phosphating/priming as they have the facility for it. Donny 05-18-2010, 11:18 PM MCR contracts that service out. Charg68 05-19-2010, 12:26 PM I have no problem with etching and coating inner panels because it will end up looking like one of Dr.Donnysteins skeletons, but I did talk to a guy who had repainted his 3 times because the seams all leaked and bubbled the paint.Just wished I lived a couple thousand miles closer to Dr.Donny.Have to blast it myself I guess. Donny 05-19-2010, 05:14 PM I've studied very closely for years MCRs pics, and even went up there, after a long-running conversation with the owner of MCR since 2001 who graciously gave me an hr of his time to give me and my wife a tour of his place. It is by far the premier place in the US (from all I know, either alot, or nothing), he dips most his cars, but Media Blasts some. To me, the dipping is best as you can EDP it all after, but you have to make sure it's cleaned out really well. For me, and for now, Media Blasting is the best alternative solution. Ever wonder what the city/county will say if you want to have all those vats of chemicals sitting around? 426HemiCharger 05-19-2010, 07:21 PM Best Place is Restoration Specialties in Franklin, WI they do e-coating also. | |||
