Starter not working? 66 coronet

Did it spin the motor? If so check your connections, (battery, solenoid, negative and chassis ground)

Make certain the connections on the starter are clean and TIGHT. It will start over and over with a clean, loose conn, then just decide not to one day. Trons are unpredictable.

Your Battery is dead!

Tighten those alternator belts, they are about to fall off!

Loose alternator belts won't charge your battery!

14.5 or somewhere close should be what you want to see when it's running...

you missed the first part of the post.. ive got the proper bracket in the mail.. the previous owner or mechanic fouled up the alternator bracket/tap on the head.. hopefully, that repair goes smooth.. will update the thread with the fix when i get the parts in.

Connections, connections, connections. LOL
I'd also replace that ground cable, or at least get a good copper crimp style connector. Those replacement lead clamp on connectors can be a major source of resistance.

You have way too many keys on your key ring; that's an ignition switch killer. Dave

If the starter jumps with the old screwdriver on relay trick, your solenoid on the starter is done for. I pulled mine today and i could smell the burnt wires. Grab a mini starter with a heat shield and you should be good. I have a 69 roadrunner w/ headers and it was a nightmare to remove so best of luck to you bud.

yeah its seems its worth pulling, looking a for a rebuild shop here in san diego area, might just have the whole engine overhauled so i can be onto the fun stuff..

So it was the battery and/or battery cables? After you got it to fire up by shorting the relay I started thinking a borderline bad ignition switch. Glad you got it fired up!
the battery was dead, in part due to the alternator bracket failure. I charged it, it still had low cranking amperage. Turns out none of the brackets i can find will work, also seems theres no way around using a the helicoil in order to get it installed without some machining. I have a call into a engine/transmission shop for cost on rebuild. Any ideas what that should run ? thanks again guys

It sounds like the bolt hole you're talking about just needs to be drilled and tapped to the proper size to install the proper helicoil. There are different helicoil sizes for different hole sizes to get you the proper thread size you need. I'm thinking a final thread size of 3/8" x 18 thread for the top bracket bolt.

Here are some alternator brackets.

Why are you wanting to have your engine rebuilt?
