As a lot of us here have been putting (or planning to) a 5.7 hemi and 545 or similar transmission in older cars. Has anyone thought of a way to put the 545 on the back of ..say a 440? Can it be done? My thoughts are what if you had a 440 with Fi-tech or other fuel injection and the 545 with the extra gears. Just thinking out of the box. Probably cant be done. Just saying... comments?

I don't see why it couldn't be done. Just need to cut off the bell and replace it with one for a bb and then torque converter and possibly a spacer of some sort.

Do they make a stand alone TCM for the 545?

Yes, I'm trying to remember it.

PCS, looks like it was discontinued.

My buddy is saying PCS will control it and they still make it. You might look into it.

putting a 545 behind a big block would result in 545 spitting pieces out. Its far too much torque for a 545. wilcap makes an adapter for a 4l80, controllers are cheap and plentiful, and a stock one will hold a heavily modified big block. I know thats taboo for some folks, but it is the best overdrive solution for a big block

If this is true your saying the 440 has more torque than a Gen III hemi? I thought the 5.7 or 6.1 had at least equal or better torque. I guess I have never really compared the two on paper.

In terms of net torque, the 1972 440 six pack had 410 foot pounds at 3,600 rpm. Compare with a 2011 6.1 at 420 @ 4,800 rpm. A '69 or '70 probably had another 10 foot pounds.
