Today i was driving my 71 charger ( 383 , 727 torqueflight) and when going up a hill the engine started to overheat and then i couldnt drive further in the selected D gear. I coasted backward until i hit flat land and placed it in park.

So here are the symtoms after towing the car back home

1) Unable to shift into R , D , 1, or 2

2) Park and Nuetral work

Can anyone help diagnose this issue? Is the tranny seriously damaged?

Do you mean it does nothing in RD12. Usually you might you lose forward or reverse but not both. What exactly were you doing when it quit moving? To lose both either the pump gears broke or the input shaft broke, I can't think of anything else that would cause both forward and reverse to fail at the same time. Unless there is no fluid in the trans.

Yea , sorry for the vagueness.. it does nothing in RD12. Ill chack the fluid. Hopefully its not the shaft

Need report on fluid smell, texture and color. Any unusual noises?
Would not have working park if ouput shaft was broken.

I suspect extremely low fluid condition which on a steep incline caused lack of fluid.

I've never seen an output shaft break on a 727 but the input shaft, the one on the forward clutch drum I have but only on a hard launch, not just cruising normally. Most likely a lack of fluid issue. Just to clarify my first post.

So i checked the fluid level and it was low. It seems fluid may have been leaking from the oil pan gasket. I purchased a new gasket and when replacing it i noticed the oil was very brown and had a bad burn smell to it. I know this usually isnt good. Any thoughts?

New filter, new fluid, take it for a short drive and see how she acts. Being low on fluid was hard on the disks ect. but maybe the wear was minimal.
Was there a lot of debris in the pan when you removed it?

RESULTS ARE IN !! and they are bad

Still wont move forward when placed in D. I gotta pull the tranny out and send it for repair.

This happened to me once I broke something in half internally sorry for not having names of parts I was only 15 I was doing a bunch of burn outs then nothing
