What class did a 62 plymouth run in AHRA in 1962? 383 343hp. I believe it was D/sa..or F/sa. Any help.. Thanks, Cleyon

well my 62 ply 361ci 305hp sport fury ran F/SA in 1967-68 they did not have 383ci

I believe I remember the 383 cars running D/SA. Ron

The 383ci was introduced in 1959 w 2x4bbls 345hp@ 5000rpm offered only in Dodges at that time, the High Block version 383ci was 4.03" bore & 3.75" stroke, they had 2 different versions, a "Low deck" like we are use to & the "high deck" version, they also had 1961 D-500 Ram Induction "Long Ram" in passenger cars only w/284-degree mechanical camshaft & "Short Ram" 10-1/2" runners only available by over the counter Mopar parts versions in late 1960-early 1961, the 383ci was available in 62 w/4bbl 305hp same HP as the 361ci at the time & late 1962 390hp Long Ram 2/4bbl & 340hp 413ci wedge then later the 370hp w/4bbl 426ci wedge in late 1962-early 1963... after that I think everyone knows the linage...

I have a customer Jerry Bennett with that combo he runs it in D/SA. Its now currently rated at 319 hp per NHRA I believe. Its not the best combo, its got a tough rating, but his engine builder and best buddy have it running real well. He ran that same combo back in the day. I asked him why he didnt run a single 4 383 and he said in 62 it wasnt available.

Yep the single 4bbl would have been nice, I don't really keep up with too many of the comp classes any more, there are too many to keep up with, for my limited memory...

Yes they did have a 383. In fact in 59 there was an RB 383 that became the 413 in 60. The B engine came in 350,361 and 383. In 60 or 61 there was a 383 B engine with two four barrels.

I believe everyone is saying it was available only in dodge in 1962 and not ply. ply. offered it in 60,61,63 and 64.

In 1962 the standard engine in the Plymouth Sport Fury was the 361 4bbl 305hp. Optional on all Plymouth models was the 383 2X4bbl 335hp or 413 2X4bbl 410 or 420hp.

In 1962 the 361 4bbl 305hp was standard on the Dodge Polara 500 and optional all Darts.

Optional on the Polara 500 and all Darts were the 413 4bbl 365hp, 413 2X4bbl 380hp (in line maniford) and 413 2X4bbl 410 or 420hp (crossram manifold).

I had a friend that had a 62 Dart 330 413 4bbl he set IHRA record at Lions in 1967 or 68.

I ran B/S S With 383 /330 in a 62 Sport Fury. The dual quads where a dealer installed option for the 343 hp I ran NHRA in 63&64.

Standard engine in the 62 Sport Fury was the 318 2bbl. 361 was optional.
When the Sport Fury first came out it did have the 361,but became a option because Ply was losing money, the 383 B was a option also. Just saying.

This car is a factory 383 2x4. The 2x4 is installed at the dealership.

Correct for later built '62 Sport Furies. When they first came out 361 was standard then switched to 318. I'll have to find the bulletin that states switch. I've got it somewhere.
