Is the hobby dead or just broke?

Hey Steve!
I have always liked the 1969 Chevy SS, as I always saw it in my Rear view Mirror! HA HA HA

For me I am in the process of building a 63 Belvedere. I also have a 68 Valiant. The 300 is my daily driver. My brother died last month and willed me his 65 Belvedere Hemi Car...Something has to go.
My deepest & heartfelt condolences for you loss...
May he rest in peace...

On the bright side you now own a 65 Belvedere, "It's got a Hemi",
great gift from your bros. it & he will live on thru you,
you're the new keeper

sorry not trying to make light of his passing, wasn't meant that way...

The Valiant would be the one to go if it was me...
I don't know the actual car thou, it may be cool as hell for all I know...

Couldn't agree more. When I build a car now days I will only build something I really, really want and build it my way regardless of resale value.
Amen to that note...

X2, having your brother leave it in your hands should tell you all you need to know about what he thought of you.

Thank you 747,,And as said from the above pages. Every car has a story and that story is what makes it special and or different.

If the environmentalist nut jobs (aka liberals, Democrats, etc.) have their way, it will eventually be illegal to drive these cars because they don't meet certain emissions or mpg requirements.

There are a combination of factors in play. Like you, I'm seeing a lot of project/parts cars hitting the market. Talking with owners, many of these are cars that people stashed away years or even decades ago because they thought they would be "the next big thing". Then the market crashed and they are now realizing they are sitting on scrap cars and they want them gone. I think the reason they aren't selling is simply price. The high demand for collector cars ensured a lot of cars that should have been scrapped were restored, and now those are sucking up all the money in the market. 99% of buyers don't want to spend $5k on a project, spend $20k restoring it, when they can get a nice driver or restored car for $10k. If you've got a car that needs "total restoration", that was a project car 10 years ago. Now it's a parts car, and if you're over $1,000, it's not likely to sell.

Another factor is the market is becoming more discriminating. I just saw an ad placed today for "Grandma's Hot Rod"... a four-door Dart. Sorry, that may have been grandma's car, and it may be a 70s car, but a four-door Dart is never gonna be a hot rod in the eyes of most people. So the adage of if it's old it must be worth something is fading away as the number of cars on the market exceeds the number of interested buyers,

The swap meets and car shows are more crowded today than I remember from 10 or 20 years ago...

Safety standards would kill them with one signature.

Question out of the blue....

Who would like to see a movie about the possible demise of muscle cars?

Ahh, not me.Cars have been my life for 60 years,If I'm lucky and get 20 years I hope they still will be around too.

Car shows are still popular, and hopefully always will be, but those folks generally are there to look not buy. Swap meets will hopefully stay busy, but to the point of the original poster, project cars are what's not moving much anymore. I would like to see swap meets get back to the way they were in the 1980s and early 1990s, which were folks with a trunk full of parts trading for parts they needed. Back then it was rare to find a vendor or even someone selling anything. That's pretty much where I am now because I would rather trade parts, but I'm getting to the point where I don't need much anymore.

whole lotta things coming into play here.not the economy in any way, just stop by any mall in any large city to see that is not true.the upcoming generation is not that interested in cars, with a few exceptions.its an electronic generation.i think this means the old cars are going to get less and less popular.also,i have found people who have nice old cars do not use them like they used to.i have seen way too many super nice rides that never make it out of the garage.the barn find is a thing of the past.if you do find a cool ride that has been sitting a long time its because the guy wants a fortune for it.many things are causing the death of our hobby.too hard to point at just one factor.

Who was that guy at B/J who spent 1.5 mil on several cars including some nice Mopars? My guess is he's a buyer for out of country purchasers or maybe a classic car dealer. A buddy just sold two of his cars to a dealer for $50k and they're now on the net for sale asking around $14k more than he bought 'em for...just wait the Russians are going to want some classic American muscle when Vladdy can get the sanctions lifted...lol.

Like my friends signature....: your chevy must be fast, cause you were haul'in *** when I passed you with my Plymouth ! ..................MO

You older guys should find and pick a young guy on this forum or around town and when your not able to drive anymore or your done with it give it away for free!!! Or atleast at an extremely discounted rate that way it gets taken care of and the hobby will live one leave it in your will only stipulation is it can't be sold only RE given to another younger guy!

Uhhh... Nice try.

yeah there's a bit of a snag here since the living guy can decide to sell the ride and the dead guy won't be able to do too much about it...

Oh come on I'm not being greedy I'll give my project to an even younger guy and I'll take a hemi powered 4 speed ........ charger?
