Im at the point now in my project where I need to get some input here from you folks.
I orginally was going to run a plain hood on my 64 Dodge. Now I'm second guessing things. I took the car out the other day minus the hood, and even with thermal coated cast iron manifolds the amount of heat is crazy, and with air cleaner on pass side it sits partially over exhaust sucking up nice hot air.
My thoughts are to install a factory looking air scoop with hopes of it partially allowing hot air to escape when sitting and of course when driving pushing cool air in. Im going to be using oem air cleaners not the velocity stacks .
Any ideas on this? Who makes an accurate fiberglass scoop thats well made. Lastly I noticed on Ebay (I know about other post pertaining to ebay) a guy sells a template for making proper spacing of air inlets etc. Is his template accurate as per his advert? Thanks

this is how i cleaned up that issue , the scoop is to short off the hood . air hits the end of the hood , don't go in the scoop . it goes over it . carbs get fresh air now .

I have kind of wondered that the scoop being too short and stuck in the boundry layer of air. Although I like your adapt and overcome attitude :)

well i'm always looking for a solution to an issue . the next type scoop that was used is the hemi one . its much taller and has a bigger mouth opening . could do the center headlite thing , remove them and bring that grille air up to the carbs like ford did , sorry for my language . i can get cared away , lol . in had some talks with a scoop designer , he said air at like water . put any thing in its way , it climbs over it , least path of resistance . he claimed that there is ways of capturing the air for a supercharging effect . more air then space for it thing . but it was to modern looking . not a vintage look at all . so i hung them in the wind . he said '' thats get them in clean cool air '' , don't think he liked my solution . lol .

Kramer is pricey but makes the most exact replica I could find (max wedge and hemi style). I got mine from sledcity. Good price and the studs are fberglassed into the scoop for easy install. No brackets just drill holes and put washers and nuts on. Sledcity also has the AFX style which have a much larger scoop height for more air flow. I'll be installing mine next weekend and I have to say I'm a little nervous about cutting a hole in my hood!

How does the sledcity scoop sit on your hood? Does it sit flush or are there gaps on the perimeter?

I got one from AAR in Florida for my '63 Dodge project. It seems to be good quality, and should prep well for a high end finish. Has the mounting studs in place for the bolt on installation. My only complaint was I pre-ordered & paid to pick up at Carlisle, and they charged me a fee to bring it there. When I picked it up at their Vendor Space, they had the same scoops for sale, same price, NO SHIPPING... I probably won't order one again, but just take the chance and get to there space early, as I do need another for my '65 project...

I got my hood & '66 Hemi scoop from AAR. Great quality & fit. I would buy from them again. Sure would take a look at the Sled City stuff too.

I love scoops, but are you trying to get cool air into the engine or cool the engine itself? I suggest you consider header wrap to keep the engine compartment cooler. Also, if you don't seal the carbs to the hood you'll definitely cool the engine (while moving anyway) with a big scoop, but you'll only get a little bit of cooler air into the carbs.

In a perfect world if there was no dust etc, I would run a velocity stack and call it a day. But since we don't I'm going to run oem air cleaners and use the the carb holes for additional ventilation, and whatever air will make it into the engine compartment. I'm running factory cast iron manifolds and they are thermal coated which helps out a lot, there is still quite a bit of heat that is in there, and when its off hopes are that the heat will somewhat escape from the engine compartment.

Don't know yet. Hopefully I'll have time this weekend to install it. So far I've just had it sanded and painted.

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say. Did you get a template for the carb hole spacing, or did you just cut out a large section under the scoop?

I didn't get a template. I plan on putting a thick piece of foam on top of the air cleaner cut to size. I'll put some sort of paint or something on the foam and close the hood "hopefully" leaving a perfect cut out on the bottom of the hood. But this is all theory right now! Haha

I do the same as you want to as my scoop is not sealed. Its a nice scoop but I got it used so I dont know what brand it is. My brother likes his scoop he got from AAR. I know my buddy was right as I saved my stock hood but he said to me that once I see the car with the scoop on it I will never put the stock hood back on. Ron

On my car the 63 scoop would not cover the crossram 13" air cleaners, so here is my solution: Later hemi scoop and a large cut-out that allows me to use 1" phenolic spacers under my carburetors (now, FiTech throttle bodies). Not posting the brand of scoop as it required extensive work to get it to sit flat and be symmetrical, side to side. I had a post about it a couple of years ago.

i saw that your scoop has the middle support bar in the front. If I use the short hood chrome off the Savoys do you think it would fit or would this bar be in the way? if not ill have to cut my middle support out so the chrome fits.

I added that stainless steel center support to give the scoop extra rigidity. I thought my hood looked better without the center trim piece. How long is the Savoy short trim piece?

Ive got a taller than stock max wedge scoop hanging on my wall in garage. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post on here if you're interested let me know. I took it off my 63 for a stock height scoop.
