Found a nice clean all stock 63 Plymouth Belvedere, 4 dr, 318, 727 for $3500 on Tampa C/L last Friday, called seller, left a msg told him I wanted the car, British guys calls me back Sat says he is putting a new radiator in on Monday and will call me back when it's done, I said "I will buy the car now", come up today and take it as is, he said no, wants to fix it first....So I check the ad this afternoon and it has been deleted....I call him up and he says "Oh sorry George, I sold it to a local guy this morning", I reminded him of our two conversations, then just told him thanks, I thought you Brits were a bit more ethical, I guess not. Wanker!

Yeah, I hate dickfores like that!

Has absolutely NOTHING to do with being a Brit! I've run across more than one American who's pulled that ****!!

Could be guy had a change of heart or someone gave him more money for it...too bad guy didn't have the balls to just tell the truth.

Maybe not more money ... a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. One guy's there with cash and the other guy "says" he'll show up. This isn't to say the OP isn't an honest guys but let's face it, money talks! I have something for sale right now that two different guys were going to show up for. I still have the item !!

I felt bad not selling my mini-bike (to a kid and his father) after they said they would return for it the next day because that same night someone else showed up and bought it on the spot. Next day the other party never showed. I purchased two of my current three project cars on Craigs list, it is just a matter of timing, fate, and destiny.

When I sold new cars in 1985, we called some customers "Bee-backs".
I'll BE BACK after I talk with the wife/bank/loanshark.
IT also is not limited to Craigslist either. It happens everwhere.

wait till you put all the effort in ,pay to get a car inspected and then the dick turns around and says "oh I didn't realise you were overseas ,I don't want to sell it outside America "

This string reminds me of something I saw when I was developing training for Ford dealers. An Up (short for walk-up customer) could show up, and a salesman could spend hours trying to sell them a car and get absolutely nowhere. Then another salesman could join in and the Up would be signing the paperwork in five minutes, and often spending more than what was in an earlier offer.

This is the nature of the concept of being a Closer. Not everyone can close a deal. I don't know if it has to do with patience, persistence, or willingness to be an asshole, but people who can close a deal will get the deal while negotiators go home empty handed. The guy who bought the car knew how to close the deal.

.....The guy who bought the car knew how to close the deal.

I think you meant the guy (salesman) who sold the car closed the deal?

No, I mean the guy who bought the car that fwi wanted knew how to close the deal.

Gotcha. I thought you were referring to the car salesman. The one who spent hours with the customer couldn't close the deal but the salesman who spent 5 minutes closed the deal and the buyer spent even more money.

I also the same type of people in action at the sheriff's office. We could have quite a few detectives interview people for hours and get nowhere, then we would send in this one guy and within ten minutes the perp would be spilling his/her guts. :)

I had a similar experience on c/l trying to buy a lawnmower. Told the guy I would be right there with cash. When we got there he was loading it up in another guys car. Of course the new buyer was a firefighter and had a better pedigree than we did if you will. It kind of pissed me off but in another way I kind of understood.

I kinda get that. There have been a lot of times I've had something on CL and someone says "I'll be right there" and they never show up. Or they show up and say "I need to think about it, or ask someone about it, and I'll be back" and they never show up again.

That's why I always tell folks I don't hold anything for anyone for any reason. You want it, be here first with the cash.

Sorry about missing the car but you cannot rely on anyone to "be there" with cash. CL is full of tire kickers and lowballers as well as never show ups. I do not alter my schedule for any of them and do not promise anyone to hold it. First to show up with cash gets it.

Talk is cheap. You call me when you're leaving home and tell me how long you'll be and that's how long I hold it for. The price is also agreed on ahead of time. Try to dicker when you arrive and you've likely made a trip for nothing.

One guy told me he couldn't come for a couple weeks but offered a deposit. I didn't take a deposit and told him I'd take down my ad because he sounded sincere. Never heard from him again !!
