DC-area drivers blast I-66 tolling system as fees hit $40 mark

I am in Woodbridge. Near MCB Quantico. My daughter lives in Orem. She loves it up there.
I lived in Alexandria, worked in D.C. and across from the Pentagon, Crystal City in the early nineties. It took me two hours to get to work, traffic was horrible.
I live in stafford county that toll road dumps out at the countys first exit i don't see how people pay these tolls I'm glad i don't have to drive them anymore . I believe a german company builds these toll roads and pays the state a portion of the money I remember years ago I,95 had toll booths coming in and out of richmond throw the quarter in type they closed them in the late 80s .
Wow, small world. I graduated HS in Alexandria, lived in Lorton. NOVA was my old stomping grounds, with weekly runs into DC (and especially the unfinished interstate just over WW bridge in MD).
Once out of there, lived in the south end of Woodbridge and worked in Alexandria.
Got the heck out of there in the early 90's and moved to Spotsy out Rt 3 and commuted to freaking Springfield every day
(often with my days' work taking me into DC, where twice hoods tried to carjack me.
Twice.
Key word is "tried". Both times, I wound up on top of them with their own gun shoved in a dark place in their anatomy, hollering at bystanders to call the cops).
I finally gave up all attempts at commuting when they started shooting at each other on 95 and got a gig near home, thinking development would never come out as far as the national battlefield park I lived right next to in Spotsy.
I thought wrong.
Within the year, Rt 3 was near impassable several hours a day and that was all she wrote - came down here in 1995 and never looked back.

I've been back once, several years ago and things had changed so much that I couldn't hardly find my way around the old places - and people were downright ugly.
If I needed any confirmation that my decision was right, I got it.
Very sad what's happened to NOVA.

Why pay a “toll” when gasoline taxes and your yearly registration are supposed to do that? Just wait, California will be next except it’ll be on every road!
EXACTLY!!!

I'd glady pay a $40 toll if Caltrans would fill the potholes with these hags and their kind.

I lived in Alexandria for 2 years in the late '90s while assigned to the Pentagon. Never drove to work once during that time. I always took public transportation (Metro/bus) because the road network was a disaster even back then. I thanked God when I got orders reassigning me away from that rat-race place. However, the rural Virginia countryside outside of the DC area is absolutely gorgeous. Too bad the state's turning blue, infected by the cancer of liberal progressivism.

WOW ! And I thought Taxachusetts was bad !, Jesus Christ !!!

I lived in Spotsy my last four years in Virginia, this is where I stored my 1970 Challenger that I bought on route 1.

I took the bus to connect to the subway to Crystal city for work. Very true, Skyline drive is gorgeous.

While I think $40 is crazy.. that's only for a single rider during peak hours. HOV and motorcycles are free and off-peak is free. Single riders couldn't use it all previously.

With the exception of a 6 year vacation in Florida, I've lived in NOVA for 45 years.. it's crazy, the traffic. I live in Springfield and drive into Arlington every day. Luckily, my hours are 6-2:30 so I miss the most of the bad traffic.

Several years ago, I was a contractor and replaced the phone system at TC Williams. Small world.

Okay... let me take a peek at the ole' Sympathy meter...

Yep, as I thought, it's a big old zero. If you read the article, the tolls are going to pay for lots of environmentally-friendly traffic solutions like buses and bike stations, so once again what we are seeing is Liberals, which DC is LOADED with, being all for this Green bullshit until they have to pay for it themselves.

If they don't want high tolls, they shouldn't be electing Democrats to make decisions.

A Democrat controlled area with crazy taxes? I'm shocked I tell you!! Shocked!!

Yep, I'm shocked too. You would think those "enlightened" folks in DC would be screaming "Double the tolls! I'll gladly pay $80 to save the planet!" :)

Hayfield alumni here.
Ah, good old Rt 1. Knew that road like the back of my hand, from Fredericksburg to DC.
I actually had a gig with a major naval contractor in Crystal City for a couple months back in the early 80's. Most boring job I ever had and that DRIVE? Geez.
Crystal City was still awaiting any signs of prosperity then - it existed but was mostly vacant. Walked a lot through it every day. Huge and empty in those days.

Speaking of old US Route 1, I had my first exposure ever to one of those early design portable roadside radar cameras, the type on the trailer that had the big numeric display that indicated your speed that could be stand alone as a deterrent or have a camera/flash added for enforcement.

Prince William County cops set one up just south of Woodbridge on the southbound side of Rt 1, camera/flash and all, and didn't tell anyone (least that I saw) in about 1989. I came rolling through there one evening in my 5.0 Mustang I had just bought new (traded in a GLH Turbo on it) after work and was jarred awake from my commuter stupor by that big *FLASH* as I go by it.

Intrigued, I turned around and went looking for what caused the flash and found that rascal. Aha! What's this??
Now, I never ran a front license plate in Virginia in all the years I lived there. Thought they were ugly and we'd always heard rumors such cameras were coming one day and we did a bit of impromptu street racin' back then (yeah, I know, I got stories...) and I didn't want LE to snag me from the front (again, yeah I know, but I was young...).
These cameras were set up to take the pic from the front of the car so that part of the drivers' face could be seen in the photo.
I discover this radar thingy with the big display numbers, I remember I don't have a front plate..... well, you can guess the rest.
-Yes, those readouts went to 99 and that was it
-No, never saw a ticket from one
