Embossed metal gasket. I know sealant might interfere with sealing if too thick. Google search results are less than informative whence gets equal answers of yes and no. I'm working on a Toyota 3.5 Sienna

I used this last time and so far so good. Follow the instructions.

Permatex Ultra Black RTV works well also.....

That's what I had a problem with on a t-stat housing. Kind of squeezed out. What I posted hardens a little better and is staying put. I like Ultra Black for other gaskets and if you're in a hurry Right Stuff is very good. No curing time before final torque like Ultra Black.

If the surface is rough, I'll give it a light smear of ultra black. But it should have the gasket with the black viton coating similar to cometic MLS headgaskets. Which is designed to seal by itself

Permatex Indianhead sealer. Small bottle will last 20 years

You used that in place of gaskets?

Toyota calls it "rubber" coating. I will go with it as I have gotten into binds by trying to out engineer the factory practices. *Depending on the engine surface

BTW... The Toyota dealership has a 392 SuperBee setting on the lot. Somebody scared themselves and bought a Toyota to deal with the trauma.

I've alwasy used the spray copper coat on the thin single layer metal gaskets. Never been a problem

I like CC. In a seal like this, it is a good and uniform coating in a spot where extra sealant in the cooling system is not preferred.
The pump showed with a double layer tin gasket with what they called a rubberized finish. It looked more like paint. The block cleaned up with no pitting, so I went with nothing. So far so good.
