You need to get the right one for your needs. Some are just overflow and do not allow returning of the fluid back to the radiator. A recovery style allows the fluid to return to the radiator. Some caps will not work correctly with recovery systems.

I think you looked at the "lobe" lift of 0.315/0.320. Multiply that by rocker arm ratio (1.5) for "valve" lift of 0.473"/0.480", or if using a 1.6:1 rocker 0.504"/0.512" valve lift.
Your fuel hauge reading looks about right for a reproduction sending unit. You can bend the tube and float arm to get empty and full fairly close, but the rest of the sweep will never be correct. Takes a bunch of trial and error.
