Looks like a 71 I had because it had sustained some front left fender damage that was not properly repaired prior to my sale of the car. Where is it located and which engine and tranny are in it?
I've never had any issue with Fram products. For these older engines, you change the oil annually anyway, so unless the filter explodes, there should be no need for higher end products.
Did the old filter gasket stay on the engine or did it come off on the filter? What you described looks just like an issue I've seen in the past where the old gasket remained on the oil filter mount (where the filter attaches) causing too little clearance for the new filter to bite the threads.
