    Fender tag decode

    Normally I would not ask for help on this and would decode it myself but I have moved and my books are packed away in storage right now.

    This is a 1966 Charger that is supposed to be a factory 383-4, 4 speed burgandy with white interior. I believe with th 999 paint code it must have been a special order color as it is VERY dark in the pictures I have seen of it.

    I would appreciate someone decoding this for me.

    Thanks in advance.

    999 could be a valid paint code in 1966

    MMMM ok. How come?

    What made 66 different than 65 and 67? AFAIK, a two digit paint code was not used until 69.

    999 paint code was not available on 66 Chargers..which was what he was asking about..there were 18 colors available on the Charger, only one started with a number

    DD1 = medium blue
    EE1 = dark blue

    LL1 = dark turquoise
    MM1 = turbine bronze metallic (available after mid-year 66)
    PP1 = bright red
    QQ1 = red metallic
    RR1 = yellow
    SS1 = cream
    WW1 = white
    XX1 = beige
    YY1 = bronze
    ZZ1= gold metallic
    661 = mauve

    Doug is correct, 999 or 99 was the code for ANY non Mopar color that they sprayed if you order it. It could be a Ford, GM, AMC or any other color. If it was not a Mopar color it got coded 999 or 99 depending on the year. No way to document the actual color unless you have a BS that MAY show the color name or if you had the original dealer bill of sale that MAY have the color name on it.

    This car is a really dark burgandy and id NOT red metallic. It was supposed repainted the original color 20 years ago.

    as stated before, 999 paint code was not available on Charger in 66...you have yet to post pic of fender tag of said car....what is paint code of said car?

    see my paint codes in post above...only paint code that begins with a number is "661" which is Mauve Metallic

    OK..let's try this another way. If a car was ordered in a color NOT one of the ones your list, also called a non-standard color, the paint code on the tag would read 999. 999 codes are common on fleet cars like cop cars or cars ordered for a company that required its cars to be a non-standard Mopar color.

    999 is a valid paint code. It means the car came in a color OTHER THAN one that was available as a standard option.

    IF the Charger in question was ordered in a color not on your list, say 77 Maroon Metallic, a color available on Monacos but not Chargers, the car would code 999.

    Code 999 is not a color unto itself. It indicates the lack of a standard color and another color was used.

    Does that make sense?

    I've seen a few 999 code cars over the years.

    My favorite was a 73 Cuda 318 car still wearing it's original but very faded paint.
    It was in-violet. A factory color, but not for that year.

    Had white interior and stripes. I imagine it was a very sharp looking car when new.
