    body stripe question

How do I find out if my car originally came with the black side body stripe? It is a 73 Charger 340 rallye. Would it be on the fender tag? If so, what is the code?

It will be V6A more than likely. That's the code for my '74 and it's black. All stripes came either matte black or reflective(code unknown) or V68 stripe delete.

I'm thinking that is a typo. Shouldn't he be looking for V6X?

It doesn't have any of those numbers on it. The only "v" number I have is v1w, which is the white vinyl roof.

Sounds like a Lynch Road car. It seems like the V6_ codes are hit or miss on the fender tags. I have seen tags with V8X on them but no V6X while the V6X is on the sheet. As well as a tag with V21, but no side stripe code either. I initially thought the side stripe codes may have been left off if there was another stripe code like V8X or V21, but that was quickly proven wrong. If you dont have a build sheet, look for evidence of the original stripe under side markers or on the inside of the doors or fenders...this all depends on the current condition of the car of course, but it also sounds like they are there and you're just trying to prove they're original???

    Thanks.

You posted a 74 tag and the question was about 73's. What was coded changed from year to year. What appeared one year may not have appeared in other years.

Might you have a picture of a 73 LR tag that shows the V6X code?

73/74 codes were the same. Actually 71-74 are the same.
My '73 is a SE so no V6 code. It has V7W for accent(pin) stripe.

Sorry. My mistake for not being more clear.

Yes the actual codes were the same but whether or not the code appeared on the tag could change. Regarding LR tags, exactly where the code appeared on the tag may change from year to year.

Tags are different year to year. What was on a 73 tag may or may not appear on the 74 tag. What was on a 74 tag may or may not have been on a 73 tag.

That's why it's especially important to compare plant and years to the same thing. It's also important to compare tags from about the same time in the production year. What appeared on a tag early in the year may or may not have appeared late in the year. Codes were added late in the year that didn't appear early in the year.

So it's cool to compare tags...just keep apples to apples.

I have a 73 Rallye and a 74 Rallye both of which don't have side stripe codes on the tags, but both have another stripe code. One is V8X and one is V21. Still seems hit or miss to me when another stripe code is present. Both Lynch cars.

I kind of figured the stripe option might be on the buildsheet and not the tag. The reason I am wondering if it had one, is because I am restoring this 73 and it is completely numbers matching with 88,000 original miles on it. At some point someone had it repainted and covered everything up. I don't see any evidence of a stripe anywhere so far, and of course I think the buildsheet was eaten by a mouse or something, because I can't find that either. My car was built in St. Louis.

They made so many 73-74 cars and not many are extreamly rare cars or hi value cars either probably never will be. I would keep it mostly original but put what ever stickers you like the most on it.
If its a bolt on deal or a sticker its easily reversable so you wont be hurting any thing build it into what you want it to be.

I have a rather rare 72 SE Charger and while there were a shit load of 72 SE's built in 72 the factory electric sun roof option & 440 Magnum engine options makes it kinda rare, I will still be building it my way with Ralley or RT doors, Tail lights, Hood, Front spoiler and rear wing maybe even window louvers if I can find the right set. In my opinion its all bolt on so its all reversable.

I guess it depends on what you call high value. To me a high dollar car is $20k, mainly cause I can't afford that either...LOL. I am going to put an 18K price tag on it and go from there, unless you think a 73 340 Rallye Charger is worth more. I am seeing them listed for $23k, but thought that may be high.

73 Rallye 340's w/4sp are very rare and Rallye 440's w/4sp even rarer and I have seen the for sale in the low to mid $20's, I consider that high value.

Mine is a Rallye triple black 340/auto and there were only 2415 rallye's, so I think my 340 is pretty rare.

Yeah, 440 4 speed Rallye cars are extremely rare and were only made for the 72 model year. All 73/74 440 cars were autos but are rare as well. Any third gen 4 speed would be pretty rare. I have been lucky enough to come across 3 74 360HP (L code) 4 speed Rallye cars. There were 94 built for the US. To me that's pretty rare. One was listed at $15000 and it was an excellent condition driver.

Here is what mine will have done to it. I'm just trying to figure out a fair market value for the car. I don't want to over price it and sit on it forever, and I don't want to take a bath on it either. It will have all new brakes, including lines, new shocks, new tune-up, new paint job with new white vinyl top, all the chrome, stainless, and aluminum are being professionally redone to show quality. The engine only has 88,000 miles on it, so it will be getting freshened up and repainted. Engine bay will get repainted. The only metal repair that needs to be done, are rear quarters. The original rallye wheels, will be blasted and redone in the original argent silver along with the center caps. The interior is in great shape. I just have to freshen up the lower door panels and center console as they are faded. The dash is in perfect shape. I need to get a couple of buttons for the seats as they have come off(just the top cap). I gotta figure out where to find those or see if an upholstery shop can make them. With all that done I was thinking of the $12k-18K price tag. For someone to bring a car to a restoration shop and get all of this done, would cost way more than that. But I know, people don't want to spend any money right now. What do you guys think? Am I crazy thinking I could get 15k for it? I included some photos of the day I got it home.
