Had a 440 block done n was just checking bore size n this is the measurement I got.The standard size is suspose to be 4.342 or 110.3 mm.Am I reading my gauge wrong or do I have to measure deeper in the bore.I called the builder n waiting to here back.Just pick up block before Xmas.

Typically you should measure closer to the center of the bore but From what I'm seeing from you ruler you're pretty close to stock. To be more accurate you really need a micrometer.

You need inside mics using a caliper on the top of the bore is unreliable

stock bore is 4.320" for a 440, 4.342 for a 400. i use outside mics to set up a dial bore gauge for accurate measuring.

Standard bore on a 440 cid is 4.320", NOT 4.342" as you stated. Also, very hard to accurately measure a bore with calipers.

4.342" sounds like (without checking) the standard bore for a 400 cid.

So that would make it 109.7 mm so if it was .30 over would that make it 110.00mm

almost...... "thousands" (such as 0.030" over pistons) is in INCHES....not millimeters

Being north of you guys that's what we work with,it's not that bad once you get use to it ,it can be confusing when you are calculating one to the other as I just did, you just have to take 25.4 n x the inch measurement to achieve mm

                The way I figure it 4.35 x 25.4= 110.49mm

Oh man, this is kinda funny but at the same time, not so funny. Using vernier calipers can be pretty accurate but it takes experience to get 'the feel' of them. Same thing with dial calipers but micrometers are the best way for the best accuracy. Looks to me that it's .020" over....but you need to measure the pistons to make sure the bore size is right for them.

Micrometers also take some experience to use them correctly. What's crazy is not very many people mic the same.....

That's very true you can have two people mic the same part n get two different measurements, that's why laser tech is taken over lol

i hope you had the pistons you plan on using when the engine is bored, ive dealt with many brands over the years and i can tell you some manufactures measure an oversize differnelty than others some will make the piston smaller than the oversize spec and some make them larger.
