What's the difference. Can posts be one and not in the other?

New posts are posts you haven't read yet.

Recent posts are all of them, including the ones you've read already.

Think of it this way:
When your wife discovers the credit card statement for TTI stuff, it's new.
When she brings it up over and over every now and then, it's recent again.
