I remember an article showing just how to do those flares, using the same year Satellite way back in the late 70's. I think it was in CARS, or Popular Hot Rodding. The article was titled "Flare Thee Well". They used electrical conduit to form the outline and welded in sheetmetal to finish it off.

I didn't like it back then either.
