So I picked up a new motor this weekend from a guy on eBay....Looked like a really good deal and so I jumped on it. Now that I got it home and started thinking about it maybe it was not the best choice...I had all intentions to build a fast street car that would see occasional track use but 90% of the time would be fair weather street driven, cruised, and car showed. The problem is I'm not sure I can bring this motor down to an acceptable street car with such big heads, Cam, and Intake. BTW its going in a 66 satellite Auto trans w/borgeson steering and Hydraboost.

What would you do? See specs below:

• Stock Stroke 440 .30 over
• Stock LY Rods Resized w/ARP bolts
• Pistons TRW Forged Flat Top 10.5-1
• Professional Products Damper
• ARP Main Studs
• Comp Solid Roller
Duration - .278 in. / .281 ex. @ .50
Lift - .681 in. / .660 ex.
Lobe Separation – 108
• INDY 440-1 Heads (Professionally Ported) Approximately 330cc intake volume
• INDY Roller Rockers (Offset) 1.5 ratio
• ARP Head Studs
• Indy 440-2 Intake (4500 flange)
• 2” Primary TTI Headers

Still need:
converter
Gears
Carb

I would instal a cam with a duration of 230-240 @ .05 range you'll be much happier!

To me, it does not seem too bad....
Your duration is a bit high 278/281
Usually anything over a 255 is more aggressive that typical street driving.
High lift too.
You might suffer in Vacuum.
NOTE: Your Rockers are only 1:5 ratio which is okay

So: Too me it appears the engine was set up for Street/Strip.

Everything else sure seems expensive and sweet!
Change the CAM as 69 GTX suggested.
Go with:
1. Holley 750 or 800 CFM
2. Hughes convertor 2,400
3. 3:55 third member

I was concerned intake volume would be to much and wont play well with smaller cam/ gears/ converter on street. Guy I bought from said he drove on street all the time w/5000 stall and 4.56's?
.681 lift just sounds outrageous to me. But I'm also use to hydraulic flat tappet cams, this is my first roller..

How much was the engine? $10,000 ?

Good deal
Simply:
De-tune it.
1. Sell the heads and get a set of 906s
2. Sell M1 style manifold
3. Get hyd lifters and replace cam

No, actually I'm not.
Sell the race stuff, heads, manifold and set it up as a street engine.
You already have $5K in the engine.
I have 2 sets of TTIs and they are $800 a set.
Sell the manifold on RaceJunk.com for $150
Sell the Heads for $900 on RaceJunk.com
Change the cam and lifters

OR: simply lose $5K because no one is going to give you the cash back.

Make the best of your mistake.

What are your options?
Sell it on eBay?
LOL

I think I would just try a smaller cam and try it before you go changing anything else!

Well,
That manifold is for 5,000 RPM and up.

Again;
Its your choice on what you want to do but that is a RACE Set-UP

I think the heads are worth more than $900. The Indy 440-1 kit is like $4000 before porting....

Also let me be clear I'm looking for an 11.50 car or better out of this...

Any other options other than basically scraping this motor for a steel 906 headed/ Hydraulic cam/ Dual Plane intake havin/ almost stock rebuild?

Talk about a kick in the gut!

Just install the right converter and rear gears. Forget the daily driver idea.

I know the heads are very expensive.
I am sorry about your situation.
My suggestion was a minimal amount of money for recuperation.

I'm sure on RaceJunk.com you can get $1,500 all day long for the heads.

I'm just trying to show you that you can make this a "good deal" because that short block is well worth $5K in todays market.

+1 ... I'd resell the engine, and build a slow one, it that's your plan.

Hell, I'd drive it. Just no trips to WallyWorld.

So I talked to Hughes racing and they said that if I can get him cylinder pressures (just the way it sits) they will grind a cam that should work with a 3500 converter and 390's.

So im going to install trans, stock converter, ans starter and see where we at...

Cool
Also: PM fellow forum member IQ 52 and see what he says
Or LewT
They know race engines

That's the best plan in my book. Then see how the street manners are and if you need to sell the heads, well hopefully by then I have enough cash saved up. :)

I see where superbee ski is going with this, I think the heads are worth more than $1500, I would sell the top end, heads, intake, aluminum valley tray, head bolts (I believe they are different for indys?), with the cam and lifters, etc. Then buy a cheap set of decent heads, a streetable cam, 850 holley, and an intake that matches your cam choice...

So if you are back into the motor for $5000 (which you should be around $4000 after the carb) you are in good shape...
