tire / wheel size ........again........ 68 Coronet

OK ..I've looked over the search menu and can't get a firm grasp of best size .. thinking 15x8 steel rims 4.5 backspace -12.00MM offset ....275x60x15 tire ...... on 68 Coronet does the offset work with 4.5 backspace and fit the wheel well

-12os on a 8" wheel is only 4" bs. The face of the wheel will be about 2" closer to the fender, the back will be about the same position as a stock wheel. The tire is basically 28x11 inches and should fit with the correct offset.... on a 68 charger at least

69 here. When making changes, offset etc was never considered. Bought 15x8 rims from Summit. 295's.

If pushed hard enough in curves, there is very minor scrub agains the inside wall on the leafs. Could be ground, too infrequent to worry about.

I plan on going 15x10 w/ 4.5"bs on my '68 coronet .... and 295 tire... There is LOTS of room in the quarters, take a wheel off and do some measuring. I measured 12" from leaf spring to wheel arch lip

I think that combo might be very tight to the quarter lip. I have 5.25 bs on my Charger and it is perfect. I could get by with a 5", but definitely not 4.5".

That may be true, I will make final measurements before ordering any wheels !

Not sure what you mean by offset. The wheel is a 15x10 with a 5.25" backspace. So would that be a .25" offset?

I was just contemplating how big I can go with my '72 Charger. Would like to do 18x9.5 wheels with maybe 295s on the back and 18x8 with 295s on the front, but not sure if either will fit. I need to get a better handle on this measuring stuff before I buy anything.

Edit: And am still fuzzy on the backspace. Should I keep the center in the centerline of the wheel, or should it stay the same distance from the rear bead as a stock wheel to keep the proper loading on the bearing?

Backspace is the distance from the inner lip of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. The less backspace gives You more dish on the outside but if too much could contact the wheel arch. More backspace Will do the opposite, and could cause the wheel to contact the spring.

I see this question allot! This is extremely easy to figure out on your own with a little guidance. Take the wheel off, take a straight edge and hold it tight against the wheel mounting surface as close to the center as possible and measure. A 10" wide wheel with 5.25" backspacing means 5.25" of the 10" wide wheel is inside of the mounting surface leaving 4.75" on the outside. So with the straight held tightly just measure 4.75" out and 5.25" in and that's where your at. Now to figure the tire into it, if your going to run an 11" wide tire on a 10" wheel than measure in 5.75" (5.25" + .5") and the same on the other side 5.25" (4.75" + .5"). I know on my Charger zero offset front and rear worked perfectly (zero offset just means 10" wide with 5" backspacing because it's centered and not offset).

So now that I know I can go 10" wide front and back (no extra stress on wheel bearings with 5" to 5.25" backspace?), all I need to figure out how tall I can go. The Magnum 500 wheels I like only go to 9.5" wide and I think 18" tall is about as tall as I can go and still look good.

Correction: 9.5" with 4.75" backspace.
