Hrmm, many thoughts....100 MPH?

Once you hit a high number on the speedo.. you should be prepared for the outcome.. its exciting, but also with a big risk... most of us have been there.. some of us never made it home..

2 idiots that just found out most commercial airport runways are only 3 1/2 miles long. Real smart cookies and proof that stupidity kills. The big question will a Hellcat go from 180 to 0 in 50 seconds which would have put braking at about 2 3/4 miles.

Hah, in my '70 Barracuda I had it well past the 120 on the speedo more times than I can count. Not a quick car, but once it got going 120+ was no problem.

Back when I was in VP-5, we had one plane, LA-6, that was our hanger queen. It was always down for some part or another, and only flew once every 90 days or so to keep it's certifications. My radar operator had a 440 Superbird, and he challenged our skipper to a 1/4 mile race, with LA-6 on the runway and his Superbird on the taxi way. The skipper was up for it, but the Air Ops guys wouldn't let us do it. :(

The runway at this airport was only 8,303 feet long!!!! Only a mile and a half roughly!

I spun rod bearings in my 3S at 145 mph..... with 1 more gear to go

Avg. length of international airport runway is around 10,000 feet, there is an 18,000 ft. commercial/general aviation runway in Tibet.
Tucson International has an 11,000 ft runway. I snuck my cafe'd 'Zuk water buffalo on to it one night & did a banzai run....prob'ly hit 130 or so.....it was so wide, stayed on broken center stripe, there was really not much sensation of speed.

But,,,, you had runway left to slow down!

Grandforks AFB 12352 ft. Guess load B52s take longer runways.
Required runway lengths
Boeing 777 requires 11000 ft.
Space shuttle 15000 ft
Stealth Boomer 6500 ft. The runway is 12400 ft. guess they also have room to abort.

I work in air traffic at sfo international and the runway lenght depends on which runway is used. We have 4

...after speeding down the runway and continuing another 315 feet, the Challenger became airborne over a ravine...the vehicle “became airborne a second time flipping end over end over a second ravine before coming to rest on its wheels.”

Them Duke boys really went out with a bang. I can only imagine the carnage those two left behind.

Airborne with no pilot license? And no wings. Someone should have told them cats can not fly not even hellcats.

30 years ago we use to run at our local un-manned airport at night for heads up drag racing fun...all good unless the runway lights came on, that meant get the **** off the runway, here comes a plane!! .....good times....cant do that no more....sux.

11,000 ft. for a 777 would most likely be the requirement for a fully grossed bird, well above sea level on a hot day, & yes, room to abort is figured into the equation. A 777 @ below gross up to 510,000 lbs can legally operate from a 7,000 ft runway near sea level.
