Got a 440 in my Charger and am curious if I can snake the oil pump out without dumping the oil. All or most of the oil is in the pan correct? Cars been sitting awhile so i figured it was bled back and the pump should come without too much mess?? Or should I dump the oil first? Cars oil pressure is fluctuating and I am gonna swap pumps and see if I can bump it up a bit and get it more consistent.

You might consider inspection of the pump before the swap. If the old pump is within specs a new pump probably will not help. Be sure to check the pressure relief valve/system. Just 2 cap screws and a plug to remove once pump is out.

Ok, I was thinking of swapping and then if it doesn't do much different it kinda is what it is. Must be bearing clearances if the pump doesn't change much.

What weight oil are you using ? Conventional or synthetic ?

I am using 15w40 rotella for now. I usually use 10w40 amsoil in my motors, but this one has been sitting awhile so I wanted to keep straight conventional dinosaur oil in it for now :) It has about 10 psi and idle and then shoots up to 40-45 psi with throttle but the idle concerns me. Most of my motors hold pretty consistent even at idle so was gonna swap the pump and see how it reacts.

Rotella eh?

Yea Rotella along with the Zinc also has a pretty good TBN when it comes to conventional oils. Generally, the higher an oil’s total base number (TBN), the better its ability to neutralize contaminants such as combustion by-products. I had the kid at autozone tell me hey that's for diesels only......I laughed and told him my dads an Amsoil dealer and I know what I need. Apparently once you put a diesel label on it, that is all it can go in. :fool: I needed a 15w40 and Rotella was available so I grabbed it. My buddy at work said man I hate Rotella and I asked him why.....he said it stinks and smells like ****. I didn't know we graded oils how well the lubricate now by how they smell! Like I said, I usually run the 10w40 Amsoil synthetic, but I don't like pouring it into an unknown motor without running it a bit on normal oil, incase the rings are stuck a bit etc. from sitting.

10psi at idle would have me looking somewhere besides pump.

Same.

Have you (OP) confirmed that the idle pressure is accurate?
What was it before it went down to 10, or has it always been like that?

Maybe ur oil press. spring is broke? Never heard of it,BUT? Pull the 5/8” square-headed plug off backside of pump and check it.

It seems to be a bit lower than the mechanical gauge under the hood but not a ton. What would you suggest looking into? Also, if there is two gauges tapped off the same fitting on the rear of motor(bellhousing area) where the factory holes are, would that screw with the pressure? Two gauges on the same tee or tey should both read the same pressure right?

I will when I get the old pump off. That's why I was going to do a pump. It isn't huge money and it will eliminate alot of guessing and tearing **** apart ya know? I ordered a new melling pump today.

I got the car from a buddy of mine who passed. It has been that way for as long as I can remember. It is a newer engine not worn, built by a local reputable shop, so I tend to think the bearing clearances and **** were done right. What are you guys thinking?

Or relief piston stuck open, a Big maybe.

A Big maybe, but my buddy had that exact thing happen to him when he rev'd the **** outta it. Ended up tearing the whole bottom end apart only to find the pump stuck and it was a simple fix. This will prove out the pump. If it does the same exact thing, I will look elsewhere I figured. With the quality of todays parts, I sometimes see the maybes becoming more and more frequent.

What does the mechanical gauge read at idle?
If its always been this way, maybe its normal.
No.
Yes.
