Engine paint

has anyone urethane paint on their engine block or other single stage paints? I'm looking to use a paint that is higher quality than spray can. I use urethane often, just unsure how it holds up to the heat of a engine. It appears on graveyard cars that they use expoy primer and then single stage.

Yes I have used epoxy primer and topcoat with PPG Deltron base & clear...materials costs a little more but looks awesome and stays put year after year.
Remember to scrub and de-grease your engine surfaces extremely well to promote adhesion.I washed mine after engine assembly with an air hose, bristle brush and lacquer thinner. No paint will stick to a dirty block.

That's great. That clear can take the heat. So I should be fine with urethane or base clear.

Absolutely.
I’ve Used PPG concept with some flattening agent many times.
If your engine gets hot enough to burn paint off, you have bigger problems.
I like Frank B’s enamel. It’s PPG deltron

Last one I did was Shopline epoxy and then Shopline activated Acrylic Enamal. If you activate it, you can clear it.

Well, in general epoxy paint is good up to about 350-400F and urethanes are good to "roughly" 250F

I wouldn't do anything that GYC displays on TV......He is the equivalent of an elixir salesman...

I have never used a primer on any engine.......The key is PREP.......Clean, reclean, clean and reclean.....And when you think you're done, clean again.......

Some people prefer "rattle can" paint and others prefer non rattle can paint......If the prep is done right both will elicit the same yield and longevity.......I use the ole "rattle can".....

I use the former totally auto paint that is offered by another vendor Chaz Dallas or Frank Badalson as mentioned above.......

PPG Delfleet after glass media blast. Took longer to cork every port than prep and paint!

We always use car body urethane. Have some that have been painted 20 years. The race motor even has Bondo in the ends of the heads to fill the INDY logo.

Thanks to all that responded. I gave it a really good cleaning, lightly sealed with epoxy and then urethane. I have it mostly assembled now
