I'm looking for a steering shaft for my '69 Road Runner.
Needs to be for a power steering car (they were shorter than what was on manual steering cars). I don't really need the entire column, nor do I need the coupler. I just need the steering shaft, so I don't think it matters if it's a floor shift or automatic (altho I have a floor shift 4spd).
 
I got these steering column parts with a B Body parts car years ago.
The main shaft is 41" long end to end.
I would like to sell all the parts in the picture for $50.00 plus shipping.

I'd have to figure out the length of a power steering shaft. I know they are shorter than a manual steering shaft.
Does that shaft have the plastic pins intact, or no?

Rick,
If the plastic pins you speak of are what holds the 2 sections of the main shaft together the answer is no.
When I got the parts the 2 pieces were seperated and I put them back together to get the proper length for you.

No plastic pins is fine... I think most are missing those anyway.

The shaft is cylindrical & then changes to a square type shape where it slides together, correct?

If the holes for the shear pins are lined up (as if the pins were in there), can you tell me the length from the front end (at the coupler) to the point where it goes from 3/4” diameter to 1” diameter?

Questioning this because the shaft in my power steering car is from a manual steering car. So even tho yours came out of a ps b-body, it might be the same as mine.

Anyway, that measurement would help.

At 4 3/8" is where the shaft becomes 1".

Thanks, John. I will be at my Road Runner this weekend. The shaft & column is installed, but I should be able to get a measurement from the end of the shaft to the step to 1” diameter at the lower bearing near the firewall. I will let you know if that all matches my car. Thanks for that info!

WOW .... I'm measuring from about the middle of my coupler, where I know the shoes are located inside, + about 1/2" to the end of the shaft from the pin that holds the shoes ... TO ... the lower bearing at the end of the column where it comes thru the firewall ... = 7 1/2".
I was thinking that the shaft gets wider right where the lower bear is located, but obviously it goes to 1" diameter about 4" before the bearing location.

My [longer] manual shaft is collapsed a bit to accommodate the power steering box, which takes the 1" dia section way up into the column & the lower bearing has nothing to ride on. I think I can use what you have there. Is it in good condition? Not bent? Splines are good? Threads at the steering wheel end are good? (my threads are a bit cross-threaded)

I have checked the shaft and it is straight with no problems.
I also checked the threads on the end for the steering wheel hold down nut and they are fine.
There is a small flattened area on one spline next to the wider slot to index the steering wheel.
It looks like at one time some one started the wheel one spline off and flattened that spline.
I have attached a close up picture of that area.

Ok, I’ve been away from my car for a while, with the holidays & all.

RE this steering shaft, assuming that you still have it, ... my concern would be the flattened spline next to the master slot, ... I’m wondering if my steering wheel would slide over that spline OK without damaging the spline(s) on my steering wheel. I wouldn’t want to have to force it on.
Are you able to slip a good steering wheel over that spline without any difficulty?

I took a file and removed the burr from the centering spline on the shaft.
I show that in my first picture.
In the second picture I show the test wheel installed on the shaft.
So it's a good shaft ready to ship!
