What size speaker does a '64 Dodge Polara use in the dash??

Hello again Doug.

My dash is out of my 64 Vert while it's undergoing restoration. I looked at the dash this afternoon and can tell you there are 4 threaded studs in a rectangular pattern that the dash speaker attaches to. The center to center measurement on those studs is approx. 8 1/2" one direction and 3 1/4" the other. The junk speaker that I have in there now was left by the previous owner and it's tiny. So tiny that it's only being held in place by one of those studs.

I also checked my FSM [Factory Service Manual] for you and I learned something that I didn't know before. From the factory, there was a speaker mounting plate that the speaker attaches to. The FSM advises that to either remove or install the dash speaker, the radio should be removed first. Then the speaker and the mounting plate are removed [or installed] as an assembly, using a 'flexible drive socket wrench to remove the [four] mounting nuts".

Take a look at this site....http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm and scroll down about midway on their page and you'll see 4 x 10" Slimline Oval speakers. These folks believe that this was the most common OEM speaker in our cars, but if you look at the mounting dimensions for these speakers the length is different than what my studs measure. My guess is that the mounting plate makes up this difference.

Thanks Steve for your reply. I had it in my mind from decades ago that it was a 4X10, but someone here said it was a smaller narrow speaker.I shall now wait for some warmer weather, when I will drop the Vintage Air unit, remove the radio, and then have access to the speaker. I also checked my FSM, but wouldn't give me a part #, not that would help. Thanks for your help to this point.

With the info I have, I think I will now wait until I have lowered the Vintage air conditioning unit, and remove the radio and go from there. (when it gets a bit warmer.) Will touch base then. Thanks. I bought this car 56 years ago in 1964, and it has been great.Hope to get the radio back as the last thing not working to the max. (Original radio has been repaired, speaker is last thing to fix).

If you have the original speaker still in the car, please post a photo of it when you do get around to pulling it. Thanks Doug!

I've got one in front of me that I just pulled out of my 1964 440. The speaker itself is 7" round, but it sits in a mounting plate. Mine was trashed so I pulled the speaker out of the plate, trimmed some wood to sit inside the plate, and attached tweeters in it. I plan to add other speakers elsewhere in the car. At one point I think someone was making a 2 in one stereo speaker that went into that dash space, but i can't remember who...

I'd send this one to you if you want it, but the cone is toast. I'm sure someone could replace the cone if you wanted an original speaker?

Part information on the back of this speaker is:

Thanks for the reply. I am on hold at the moment. I notice that you are in a warmer climate. It is at the freezing point through most of the day. Wait for it to get a bit warmer before I tear into my car. So please hold on to it.I shall revisit here when I have the speaker out, and decide my next step. Thanks.

I'll hold onto it. If you decide you want it just send me a pm. I've got the factory radio sitting on a shelf also. A previous owner chopped the power wires off of it.

Thanks. The original AM radio still works. I'll let you know how I am progressing as it gets warmer. Fortunately the car is in my garage attached to my home.

Mr. Druid318,
If it’s not too much trouble, could you post some pics of the original speaker mounting plate? That’s one of those things that I might run across at Carlisle sometime and having pics of it would be very helpful. Thanks!
