So a couple weeks ago I sold my 69 RR and I am know looking for a new car. This one seems to check all the boxes for what I am looking for, but there seems to be a lot of BS claims by the dealer selling the car. I have traded quite a few e-mails with him and spoken on the phone with him a few times as well. It sounds like the dealer is now actually the owner of the car. Here is what he is telling me vs. what I have been able to verify.

1. His claim...car makes 730hp/980tq. He has, however, provided me with the dyno sheet from the engine builder (built in 2005). Dyno sheet shows 506hp/513tq. He also provided me a copy of a dyno sheet from a chasis dyno that was completed back in march. It shows 417hp/463tq.

2. His claim...the engine was built by Bill Hancock who was Richard Petty's crew chief at his shop in NC. Here is what I can find out about Bill Hancock....he worked for Chrysler developing race engines and had a shop called Arrow Racing Engines in Michigan. This part makes sense because the original dyno sheet for the motor is from Arrow Racing engines. I can find no info linking Bill Hancock to Richard Petty as a crew chief.

3. He included a photo of the fender tag. The fender tag on the car started with PX23. All I can find about a PX23 code on a fender tag is for a 68 Plymouth Fury. When I asked him, he was positive that was the correct tag, and that PX23 was just an option. I pressed him further on this and he conceded that the tag was just in a bag of stuff from the previous owner so he put it on the car....none of the other numbers on the fender tag matched the tag in the door jamb.

4. He claimed that the car went to Mecum in December and bids went to $58,000 but they did not sell it. What I can find is that the car did, in fact, go to Mecum in December, but according to Mecum's website, bidding stopped at $30,000.

5. He claims the car will run 10.36....for a 4speed car that only makes 417hp (4.10 gears) this seems a bit "optimistic" to me....or am I wrong about this (leaf spring car...no caltrak, or adjustable shocks)?

I made him an offer based on what a 65 coronet hemi clone car would go for and he told me that wasn't nearly enough since he is into the car for over $51K. The car is on the docket for mecum indy next month (if it happens). I will watch this closely to see how it bids. I just hope the bidders aren't taking the cars description as gospel as there seem to be a lot of discrepancies.

PX23?
P is a Plymouth full size and W is a dodge mid size
X isn’t an available second code AFAIK
23 is a 2 door hardtop and this is a 21 sedan
They didn’t use P /W or 21 and 23 in 1965 anyway.

Big difference between 500 and 730 horsepower, in terms of dollars, driveability, and maintenance.

this guy sounds full of ****, run Forrest run!

Sounds like quite the car salesman. Will say anything to make a sale. I would have a hard time buying a car from most of these dealers nowadays.

Sounds like a nice car as is; nothing wrong with those horsepower numbers off the dyno sheet. The problem is the seller. Sounds like if he opens his mouth a lie comes out. I’d bail just because I don’t deal with those sort of people.

Here is where I was able to link the PX23 code to a 68 Plymouth Fury:

Sounds like it passed hands a couple of times and the story got distorted.

I would like to see paperwork and the car in person.

The car suppose to be really nice and maybe lots of care to restore it to it's condition and then you see something like this, and I'm not just talking about the gauges...

Take a look at the radio delete plate with what the paint is doing and whatever else is going on with it. I would look this one over very closely. Pretty car though.

Seems kinda flaky to me...
Sounds like the salesman is talking out his ***...
Guess we'll see when it goes across the carpet.
Lipstick on a pig with a elephant shoved up it's nose..
Look close before you leap on this one Forrest

  • FYI for you. Clone cars of the early "B's" Have a hard time breaking the $50K mark. I have one.The trend has been the price range in $30-$40K. We sold 2 64's over the past few years and had a hard time getting $40k for one and a hair under $50k for the other.Yes you can easily invest $100K to build one. Play the game if you have to have it. Doubt anything is selling high right now.
  • There is a 64 Dodge 528 Hemi, fuel injected,A/C all the bells and whistles semi-pro street that the original owner spent over $200K on.
  • It is at a broker now in Henderson Nevada for $89K for more than a year now,no sale.

the last picture showing the underside, really tells you what this car is.
lipstick on a pig.
look closely at the leave springs and the hangar areas as well as the rest of the car.
someone fluffed this car and is hoping for a sucker.

That is what I thought as well when I started going through the pics I was sent. I have more, but chose the most telling ones to post here. Looks like some paint was sprayed over a lot of crap.

With those seats (not sure what they are out of) the steering wheel is only inches from it. Have fun getting in and out. Sorry to pick it apart but it's pretty easy to do.

was re reading this and noticed....
appears to be mickey thompson street slick tires on that car?
hes running 10-s on street slicks?? with that heavy of a car?
with no traction aids at all?
that guys fulla shite.
id highly doubt his claims, assertations,or even invoices/receipts at this point.
who knows if those receipts are even for That car/engine.

ps,check out the mopar swap shop on fb.
lots of mopars are being sold at fire sales for fresh cash.
most of them are so desperate for cash that there are some screaming deals to be had.

Oh, please....pick away!!!!! I hadn't noticed that with the seats and the steering wheel. I just went back and looked at picks from my RR (with bucket seats) and there is A LOT more room!!! I was pretty excited about this car, but the little voice in my head was trying to tell me to stay away. Seems like a lot of your opinions here are the same as my little voice.

Maybe it runs 10s in the 1/8th mile ?

:bananadance:

I'm thinking that the in-person review of this car will drive the price way down. So many little things from the pics alone, but the undercoat looks like it was done to hide ****. Pull the carpet on the rockers, yeeesh.

Might tell you something. Bidders normally look the car over that they are interested in before bidding.

If it was bid to $58k at mecum, mecum probably would take a smaller fee to make the deal. That $30k sounds more like it.
