I would guess most stolen cars go to "Chop Shops" but I've never seen nor heard of stolen parts for sale. With the number of cars stolen how do they move these parts? Are reputable shops buying them? The recent videos of thugs stealing new Dodges makes me wonder where do they end up?

You would be surprised at how many of those stolen parts end up at autobody shops right in your neighborhood. Growing up in North Jersey, "chop shops" were real popular in my area. Usually the cars were stripped down and the parts were distributed locally. It's way to risky to try to move whole cars through the ports nowadays. I haul out of the ports all of the time, and not too much enters or leaves the port without a long paper trail.

I had a 72 Duster stolen from in front of my house when it was new and got it back 3 hours later with different hood and tires. evidently was a body shop that wanted the hood, nothing special, and tires and put car back on the street. Now with parts numbered not as easy.

there's shipping containers full of them, to ports everywhere

It would sure make a good Gone in 60 seconds movie.

Every container that enters a port in the USA passes through a radar machine, basically a huge x-ray machine. I know, I'm in the ports constantly. Getting loaded at the port in Savannah, Georgia on Tuesday.

So if a shipping manifest states that the cargo is six cars, and x-ray shows six cars, would that set off any alarm bells and investigations to see if the cars are stolen?

Every piece of heavy equipment that I pick up or deliver to a port is verified at least 3 times by the VIN.

This picture was taken ON THE DOCK at the port of Baltimore. Security is very tight in and out of the ports in the USA.

A lot of these containered cars are vehicles that have been purchased with false I/D, drivers licence and banking information. They make the deal at the dealership, slap down a cheque with VOID written across it so "Dodge" knows where to take your monthly payments from and you drive away in the car... straight to a marine can. VIN is valid, car is "legal" and being sold overseas. Next Month "Dodge" comes looking for the car that is already gone overseas to Turkey, etc.

A picture of a crane on a flatbed?
What I am trying to say is that I make my living hauling in and out of the ports. You are NOT getting away with hauling a container full of stolen cars into an American port. You can listen to our resident "super poster" who probably has never been in a port and doesn't even have a job, or you can take it from someone that makes a living in the ports. Here I am delivering a Caterpillar D6 dozer to the port in Charleston.

thats kinda what i thought too.
esp on stuff going out versus stuff coming in.

NEW YORK - Federal authorities say that thousands of vehicles have been stolen or carjacked throughout the tristate area in order to be illegally exported from the United States through various marine terminals located in/around the Port of New York/Newark.

Like I said before, I am in ports ALL OVER THE COUNTRY on a regular basis. Those shipping containers are x-rayed upon entering AND leaving.

?? so ??
these thieves are obviously still shipping them in containers,im sure more are getting caught but thats the risk they take.
photon and dadsbee both mentioned what i was thinking,
if theres a manifest/paperwork for the load then why would they even open the containers?
those cars are ending up in other countries, getting resold for max money.
and i find it a bit foolish to think that body shops everywheres are all hiding stolen cars in their back lots..
esp when its way easier to get rid of an entire car rather than part it out and Hope none of the numbers ever come back to you....

now,as to how its being done.
theres 3 diff kinds of car thieves.
pros, who take them to dismantlers/body shops that work with a scrapyard and pros who take them to the docks and deliver.
randoms, people who just take a car, joyride it,then ditch it and more randoms who steal a car specifically for its parts.
and scrapyards/scrappers.,who take the cars down to a shell, crush them up and stick them in a load as Tin.
no Vins are recorded that way.

All I am saying is the ports don't have to OPEN the containers to see what's inside. They are x-rayed. I'm sure that some still get through, but most stolen cars do not leave the USA via the ports in America. More than likely they are leaving via Canada and Mexico.
