I always thought Uncle Ben was a Pullman Porter (or at least employee), a respectable and relatively well paying trade from the early part of the 20th century, even before.

I must be stupid. I would think you would promote a product with someone who's appealing ? Not offensive. So, since when did the persona of a woman representing a quality product become offensive ? I would think just the opposite, that she reflects something good.

For years, http://homestyle-foods.com/all we new to ask for at the grocery store was the black man sausage. It was sold out half the time. Think they changed the package some, so if you look close you can see the name.
 
Mom's gotten this at the Armenian deli for as long as I can remember...made by those pesky racist Russkies (I'm not a big fan, but it's good with some things)..You know, I don't foresee them changing it:p
