Another oil filter thread

I personally have not done it but I have seen ones that were cut open with quite a load of ferrous stuck to the shell. Plus I know first hand how having magnets on fuel filters work for keeping rust out of carburetors.
Hell, I'd like to keep anything in my carburetor. Dang thing goes dry after a couple days.... :)

Engine Masters on Motortrend had a great episode on this very thing - Oil Filters
They tested them all

They Love the K@N Gold - 10 Micron Rating

And of course the WIX Racing and Regular WIX

Top Three

Microns - Purpose

I'll need to consider the K&N Gold, 10 micron sounds good. Not sure how much better the 10 micron is than the 50 micron of the Wix 51515R at protecting the bearings etc.

I use the 51515XP, the standard 51515 is cellulose media, and the XP is full synthetic.
There is a small tradeoff in microns, (35 microns for the XP I think?)
With a high volume oil pump, the synthetic element and thicker housing may help, I dunno.
Has anyone ever had a standard Wix filter problem?

I had a permanent cleanable oil filter with a magnet in the end, it was a pain to get really clean.
I do run a couple magnets on the filter, when it gets cut open, there are fine particles caught there.

Has anyone ever had a standard Wix filter problem?
Never, at least with my stuff. Of course, I actually change oil when I'm supposed to on the
other vehicles - and the GTX gets it each spring regardless of miles (which are considerably
less than 3000 from the year before).
