Chain saw recommendations

I have a husky that I've had good luck with, once I got the idle mix set. I don't use it a lot (yet) - mainly when deadfalls land on my lawn, to clear them out. But, I'm thinking about adding a wood insert to my fireplace and it'll be getting more use at that point. Keep it filled with a fuel/seafoam mix and it starts every time. I just need to learn how to file chains....

I've used a poulan for 42 years and even with 5 year old gas in it, it starts by the 4th or 5th pull. I don't use it much these days, but It's always ready when needed.

I had a tree fall spring 2020. Pushed down from a rare strong wind from the NE after soaking rains. 24" trunk 90' high Ash tree.
Just reporting my latest chainsaw experience.
What kind of ash tree? What we have around here are called arizona ash and and if one makes it to 50 feet before it dies....well, very rare.

My 391 and a little Ash..

Read above lol but that looks a lot like most that I've dropped....half rotten inside.

Having a good chain file when you need it in the field but I got to where I buy them off the internet and have extras. The chain used to be fairly cheap and shipped for free.

Dang, someone finally mentioned a Poulan lol. My Poulan 3400 is 37 years old and used to use it to cut firewood every year. Dad bought it and just handed it to me. It came with a 16" bar and it wasn't long before it got an 18" stuck on it. My wife burned through 3 cords before I jumped her *** about it. Heck, we live in Texas! but she liked the fireplace roaring. I am a fan of Stihl products though and have a FS55 weed eater that's probably getting close to 25 years old. Used to have an acre of land with lots of trees but now only have 1/2 acre....with lots of trees. Getting ready to use my electric chain saw to hack up some medium sized limbs that the power company cut out a few weeks ago and left. Started to call it in but I'll burn it instead :D Arizona ash burns pretty good and works fine in a burn pit.

Not sure of the sub species of Ash. But it was healthy. Making the wood very solid. (A shame really.) I have one Ash that the woodpeckers love. Of course it couldn't be that tree that fell? Lol. Even saw one of those big red Woody Woodpecker birds land on it. It was the size of a crow. Only time I have ever seen one of them.

The only 'tree' I've seen any wood pecker pecking on is the utility pole out back. The top of it isn't even close to being flat anymore. I think the only thing holding it together at the top are the insulator bolts for the 3 phase wires lol

My Poulan is a 16 inch and the saw case always has two to three new chains in it. I learned to file them early on and I had a guy that would sharpen them professionally every third or fourth time I went over them. This saw was used to cut 5 to 10 cords a year for at least 10 years. Talking about Ash trees, the invasive emerald ash borer may eliminate the ash trees totally in Missouri, EAB is present in 89 counties and the city of St. Louis. While we have about six species, white ash is most common.
EAB larvae disrupt nutrient and water flow towards the crown of the tree and leads to the discoloration and loss of foliage at the top of the tree and causes the tree to attempt to grow new branches wherever possible. If you notice abnormal foliage growth at the base of an ash or see an abnormal number of woodpeckers pecking at the middle of a tree, find a professional for advice. They go from standing to dead pretty quick.

I have a Husqvarna 340. Great saw, reliable and it's a 340!!

I purchased an Echo with a 20" bar the last time I bought a saw... Best saw I have ever had...

I have 3 Echo saws a CS-3510 16in, CS-500P 18in and a CS-620P 24in. All Great saws I do property Maintenance and there is nothing worse than working with bad equipment. All three of these get me through my days when doing big jobs with-out issue, everyone has it's purpose. I would NEVER ever buy a Husqvarna again or use the New Poulan saw I was given for FREE. Both horrible saws and both ended up in the shop multiple times. The Husqvarna had 3 new muffler "jobs" on it and had to heli-coil the head then the last time a bolt backed out and the other broke-off while I was working in a tree and I threw it out of the tree!!! The Poulan was just that always "Pullin" but never started plus it had issues with the rope not recoiling!! Bought new Echo saws and never looked back, they have been making saws for 60 years. This is what I was working on all day today and started making the pile I have bigger.

Stihl without question
I had an 08S for 30 years finally couldn't get parts anymore. Bought a MS271farm boss, very pleased with it.
With any saw keep it it of the dirt, clean the bar guide often, always fill the bar oil when you fill the fuel tank and cle a n the air filter

Stihl is only chainsaw out there I own a few of them a 200t, ms170, ms250, ms251, (2) ms391, ms661 (with a 36 inch bar), 036av and a 050av not counting my stihl gas drill and all my stihl blowers, and weedeaters
Stihl is the best out there they are pricey but you want stuff to last
I use to sell firewood I cut 65 cords one season with just my ms250 with 16 inch bar cause thats only saw I had at the time and I still have that saw and it runs great

I work in the sawmill industry, all these people saying Stihl is the only way:jackoff:. You can ask my neighbor who's been in the tree trimming industry his whole life or any logger and you'll hear the same thing... A mixure of Stihl, Husqvarna and Jonsred (I believe Jonsred is now just a red Husqvarna)? What is important is that you buy a professional grade regardless of whichever brand you choose not a Lowe's or Tractor supply saw. If someone says they'd never buy any of them.. they don't know what they're talking about because they all make cheap saws and they all make great saws.

This right here is one badass saw, Husqvarna 562XP!! 2 years ago I decided to step up to a bigger saw, being sick and tired of my 450 constantly having to be tuned I gave the auto tune a whirl and haven't been disappointed. It's all the motor you'll ever need, mine eats through 24" logs like nothing with a 24" bar on it and runs perfectly every time I pick it up and I cut a lot of firewood. So far I've done nothing other than blow out the filter occasionally and keep it sharp.

I'll take a beating here...but after using a Shitl Concrete saw for work a few years ago, I would never touch anything with that name.

I rented one about a month ago to saw some concrete, it ran absolutely terrible but I blame it on the rental store for not keeping it tuned.

here is the saw Poly uses in the land down under when he cuts trees down
