Single piston caliper troubles?

Good friend of mine has a issues with some Cardone brand 73-76 A body calipers. New rotors, pads and the calipers, no clearance when assembled, he says it's a bit tight. We popped the piston out of the bore and measured the depth to the opposing side. It is 1/16" less then the factory cores. It almose seems like they built the opposite surface to compensate for machining and didn't cut it enough? Anyone run into an issue like this? He had a different brand, some off brand and same issue.
 
Just curious, how do the rotors and pads check out ?
We have seen 2 different pad thickness in the same box.
But no , I have not measured any piston length.
 
Lots of times when replacing with new rotors, new calipers, and new brake pads, things don't go back together without sanding down the brake pads to get everything to fit properly.
Get yourself a sheet of 80 grit sand paper, and sand down on the pads until you get the clearances that you need for everything to turn freely.
An easy fix.
 
I didn’t have a dial caliper with me, just two 6” steel rules. Rotors are new (as are the pads) and around 1” +. I was puzzled by the width of the caliper being 1/16” less.

Way back in the day, we would scrub some off with a chop saw. And no I don't miss working at midas :rofl:

Nugeon. That was the other brand. I generally think of calipers as indestructible, save maybe a hone on the bore to clean up some pits. On Rock Auto, it shows both sides, L and R, in Raybestos brand but when you attempt to put it in the cart, it shows up as unavailable.

I wonder if these are new cores, unless they spray weld the fixed side and re-machine it?
 
The piston isn't pushed back all the way in this pic, I know, but here's the opposite side w a pad held up to it. Seems like the tab should go over farther?

If I am reading it right then your rotors are 1.1" thick They should be 1". The way the pad fits the caliper, does look a little funky.
 
You got those "anti rattle" shims on the back side of the pads too, adding to the total thickness of those brake pads, that you now have to also take into account for.
Get out the sheet of sanding paper, on a flat surface, and sand down to fit.
Your making a big mountain out of a little mole hill.
