torsion bar reinstallation

Hi, have a 67 coronet 500, 318ci. put all new bushings in the front end and put it all back togther loose but cant get the torsion bar back in. is there a trick or installation sequence that i dont know about? I have the shop manual but it doesnt say anything special about putting it back. thanks, dave
 
Do you have the right side on the right side? Left and right side bars and did you swap end for end? How did you pull them out?
 
Yes, there is a trick. Install the bars BEFORE you tighten the nuts that secure the lower control arms to the K frame. That will allow the socket in the bar to move and accept the bar straight on

That would be a cause of them not going back in. Something else I do is NOT to tighten any of the new suspension parts until the car is lowered to ride height...then tighten it all up.
 
I am positive the bars are on the proper side as I never took them out of the rear socket. The suspension is fully unloaded and the bolts are still loose. I'll keep trying and get a buddy to help it in place. Thanks, Dave.

Strut rods & lower control arms need to be bolted snug but not tightened. This will keep the LCA in a proper position to accept the bar. Like stated, do not tighten down anything until its on the ground.
Another thing to consider is how much grease has been used for the bar sockets. Try cleaning out the sockets a bit. If the bars go in about 99% of the way, a little light tapping at the rear of the bar will help. LIGHT tapping with a block of wood to buffer impact.
 
I've found that leaving the lower control arm loose at the ball joint allows the arm to pivot down a little lower which gives a better alignment between the rear and front hex's. Make sure the adjustment bolt is backed off or removed. Yeah, a little help pushing the torsion bar forward while someone pushes down on the control arm would help.
 
Yeah. leave the height adjuster loose, so you can rotate it to match the front T bar end. It helps to have a friend pull up on the bar from above, while you push and twist from below.
