70 Chevelle.....What are the #'s ? All I can make out is 3216 247?????

It came with a bunch of Mopar stuff, so we were assuming Mopar, but..
That is the patent # that you see, there is a 4 digit # on the body 3186 or something. I called Brewers and they said that the # on the body didn't meen anything and the numbers that should be on the reverse finger will tell what it belongs to, but I found no numbers.

It's going to be from a production car. It's not a Competition Plus shifter. No shift stops and it uses a factory "blade" type of shifter handle.

Yes it is a Competition Plus shifter but I think it's for a Chevy....Look close at the pic it is stamped "Competition Plus shifter"

It would have had a 9" handle...see below.

9 " 3216

12" 2833

15" 3217

18" 3523

Finally found it for you.............

1969 Camaro OEM factory installed Four Speed Hurst Shifter. This shifter is for the 1969 Camaro and the 1968 - 1969 Firebird / Trans Am. I'll post pic's of the correct handle to help you or the new owner fine the rite one.

I've had many gm cars with a 4 spd, never had any with that much offset. Most had long handles with the exception maybe of the 1st generation camaro's.You beat me to it.

That same handle can also be found on the 73 and newer Novas with a 3 or 4 spd trans.

Shifters - Manual Transmission
All 1967-69 Camaro 3-speed transmissions transmissions used Muncie shifters. 1967-68 Camaro 4-speed transmissions (Saginaw transmissions as well as Muncie) also used Muncie shifters.
The stock Muncie shifter was mounted by a bracket to the transmission crossmember and further supported by a longitudinal stabilizer. This caused problems in performance applications due to the transmission twisting under load and binding the shifter levers - causing many a missed shift. The stock Muncie 4-speed shifter was often replaced by the aftermarket Hurst Competition-Plus shifter. The Hurst shifter mounts directly to the transmission housing, instead of the transmission crossmember, which eliminates the shifter binding issue. The 67-68 Hurst aftermarket bracket used U-bolt around the tailhousing.

The Muncie shifter in 1967 was generally stamped "MUNCIE" on the handle, (we are still researching this - while there was only one part number in 1967, there are cars with unmarked handles).
In 1968 there were two part numbers. The Muncie shifter on the Saginaw was not stamped, while the Muncie shifter on the Muncie transmission was generally stamped "MUNCIE". There are known exceptions to this rule though.

1969 Camaro 4-speed transmissions (Saginaw and Muncie transmissions) used a factory installed Hurst shifter. The Saginaw transmission required different shift rods than the Muncie and the Muncie small block rods were different than the big block rods. The factory Hurst shifter was similar to the over-the-counter Hurst Competition-Plus model, but differed in the following ways:

•Slip-in "bayonet" style round handle (stamped 5325) instead of bolt-on square handle.
•No adjustment stop bolts.
•Small-block and big-block cars each used unique shifter mounting plates bolted to the tailhousing. The aftermarket Hurst bracket bolted to the tailhousing, but was the same for both small-block and big-block.
•OEM 69 shifters used molded rubber bushings for the rod ends. Aftermarket Hurst shifters used nylon or bronze bushings. Rebuilt or reproduction shifters use the 1970+ rubber insert bushings.

Info is from here: http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml#Shifters

That shifter will go for $400.00-$500.00 if you find a handle......Still want it to be a Mopar handle lol Hope I made your day.

Get all the parts and restore it and you could get as much as $700.00

Ive got a 5 gal pail full of shift rods and levers, but i might use them some day.LOL

Look over your shifter again you should see another # between the slot and the square bolt head on the side marked Hurst comp...I think I see a "U" hidden by rust.
A serial number on the far right of the words HURST Competition Plus was used to perform factory warranty repairs for GM, Pontiac, America Motors (Javelin & AMX) and early 1970 Mustang & Torino’s all used this 3138 housing box. The serial number has no meaning today and is NOT a date code

I had a nova with one of those crossmember mounted Muncie shifters.Biggest piece of crap ever made.It would lock between 2nd and 3rd every time trying to speed shift.Stop crawl under and pop the shift lever back to the center. It was pitched in the junk pile for a competition plus.

Wow, thanks, I stand corrected. I remember them saying Hurst, but never remembered them saying Competition Plus. Guess I'm never to old to learn.

The way I understand it, the Hurst units made for OEM production were dummied down versions.....I've never seen a Comp+ aftermarket unit without stops either....

It almost sounds like you guys are ENJOYING talkin Chevy, don't forget where you are!. Ha Ha Ha.
Thanks alot for all of the info, great work.
